This tutorial will show you how to fix latency and delay problems in FL Studio 21. Delay due to latency is a common problem in FL Studio and can be very problematic when trying to record with a microphone or midi from a keyboard for example. If you have high latency when recording, everything will be out of sync. In order to record without delay in FL Studio, you need low latency. To fix this, make sure that you are using the correct ASIO driver, and that the ASIO buffer size (audio buffer) is not set too high. You can also freeze tracks in place to reduce CPU load. Some plugins are very CPU intensive, and disabling these will allow you to use a lower buffer size, which again will provide lower latency and no delay.
Typical latency issues are recordings that are out of sync. This could be audio recordings or recorded midi that don't show up properly aligned on the FL Studio piano roll grid.
Before you start recording with a mic or a midi device in FL Studio, you must make sure that you have low latency, or else the recording will be out of sync. The most common reason for delay, lag and out-of-sync recordings are high latency. This is usually a result of using the wrong ASIO driver, the wrong ASIO Buffer (audio buffer) size or a computer that is too slow. Higher ASIO buffer settings are great for slow computers, and will enable you to keep on working on big projects. However, higher buffer settings means more latency. This tutorial will show you 3 simple ways to reduce latency in FL Studio, even if you have a slow computer.
I recommend always using the ASIO driver that comes with your sound card, because it will usually provide the lowest latency possible. However, if you need to also have system sounds simultaneously, I recommend using the FL Studio ASIO, which is a kind of hybrid ASIO driver. Most external audio interfaces provide ASIO drivers that allow you to also hear the system sound though.

If you don’t have a good soundcard you can do what you want and will always have bad latency
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic Жыл бұрын
It depends on so many things. What kind of connection does it have if it's an external one? If it's an internal one, it's usually all about the drivers and how the system itself is set up. Are you running dual-channel memory? Quad channel? what are the memory timings? etc etc. I've seen top-notch sound cards being used, and still battling high latency due to a system that is not set up ideally. In most cases though, the latency is a result of the buffer size being set too high, or simply too many VST's, which all do add a slight amount of latency. It takes time to process all of them and this adds up until eventually, it becomes impossible to record without too much delay. This is by far the most common cause and only has two solutions: Temporarily disable CPU-hungry effects and lower the buffer size, or buy a faster computer. Hopefully these tips will enable at least a good portion of the people struggling with this to keep on working without having to go buy a new computer, which can be quite expensive :\

The quality of the provide ASIO driver does tend to vary from one manufacturer to the other, although I'm not personally familiar with the one you listed. Most tend to offer "hybrid" drivers that allow you to also listen to system sounds at the same time, but not all are equally good, and you might end up with more latency because it's not closing and opening properly, like when using the FL Studio ASIO driver for example. It's great for listening to both system sounds and using your DAW at the same time, and it's much better than the OS driver, but still introduces much more lag than a dedicated one like the ASIO4all.

Just bought a new Asus lapop that should be great for music production but I have a small latency when using FL Studio Asio. When I'm using Asio4All then there is no latency but other programs have no sound. It's strange but there is no latency for my old Dell laptop for example. What should I do? Should I download a different Asio or should I buy an audio interface? Thanks a lot if someone could help.
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic Жыл бұрын
Hi, I assume you're using the internal sound card in your computer. In that case you need to use ASIO4ALL to get the least amount of latency. The reason you get less latency with that one is because it takes complete control of your sound card, and enables FL Studio to communicate with it directly, without going through the OS. The FL Studio ASIO driver is a kind of hybrid driver, which allows you to also hear system sound, but because of that it also causes much more latency. There are really only two options. You could try using the ASIO4ALL and hten enable the "auto close" option. It will then try to close the connection when FL Studio is not focused. It works well most of the time, but its not as convenient as using a true hybrid driver as it will try to automatically switch between the two and you can't use both at the same time. If you want to be able to use a hybrid driver and use both FL Studio and System sounds with minimal latency then you'll need an external sound card, like this one for example, which I've been using myself: geni.us/scarlettsolo-3rd-gen It comes with its own focusrite ASIO driver. It offers the same low latency as ASIO4ALL, and the same hybrid functionality of the FL Studio asio driver, so you can use KZfaq and use your DAW at the same time with no added latency.

@@FireWalkMusic Wow thanks for the quick reply. I don't actually have a internal sound card. I just got the FL Studio with Asio4all and FL Studio Asio and tried to make it work with those two. Perhaps I should just play around with the "offset" button, so I could get latency under control because cpu should not be a problem since it's a brand new computer? Also, any idea why there is no latency with my older laptop (that crashes a lot with high CPU usage etc. but has no latency with the default FL Studio Asio settings)?

@@riyan_prof Ah, yes you mean manual PDC. That can be very useful in some situations. Used to have to fiddle with that all the time back in earlier versions, because under certain situations the APDC just didn't work properly, and you could easily hear the kick for example being out of sync with other elements. Extremely frustrating! But after the rework they did on the whole PDC system I haven't had eny issues and I haven't had the need to change the settings manually since. There might still be some situations where it's needed though, but luckily for me I just haven't had to worry about it anymore :)

@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic Жыл бұрын
It's actually not a windows problen, it has to do with the way realtime audio processing works, and how a DAW communicates with the sound card. When you enable the Asio4all for example, it enables your DAW to have direct control of your sound card, completely bypassing your OS. That's why you won't be able to hear system sounds, KZfaq etc when using the ASIO4all for example, unless you enable the "auto close" option so that it detects when you're using the DAW or not. This direct communication is why the ASIO drivers provide far less latency compared to the OS driver. This will be the same in any OS and for any DAW. The problem is that every single VST (synth or plugin) takes a certain amount of time to process. In order for the playback to stay in sync, the whole project is "delayed" slightly (plugin delay compensation) to compensate for this processing time. The more plugins you add, the more delay is introduced, until eventually the latency becomes so high that it becomes very difficult to record, because there is so much lag. Slow computers can work around this (in a way) by increasing the buffer size, which basically gives the CPU more time to get the work done, however, this means even more latency. A really fast computer can usually process a fairly large project even with a fairly low buffer size though, so latency issues are usually more common among laptop users and people with older computers. It happens on mac too, so these tips should come in handy both for mac and windows users. :) It can be a good idea to pay attention to the CPU meter up top. This actually isn't a "CPU" meter in the traditional sense like in task manager, instead, this meter is monitoring your CPU's ability to process audio in real-time, with regard to filling the audio buffer. If it's in the red, then the buffer is too low and needs to be increased. If it's very low, then you can safely lower the buffer size. I have a video about this here, which you might find interesting: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nL2ldpCArdnVmY0.html
