In this tutorial, I will show you how to update FL Studio and keep all settings and data.
Fl Studio 21 is finally here but some people are hesitating to update because they are afraid they will lose all their settings and files. This could be tricky in the past as you had to migrate settings from an old version of FL Studio to the new one. Not too long ago they changed things so that your settings and files are now actually located in a unique data folder, independently of the FL Studio installation itself. This means that you can have several installations of FL Studio, all using the same data folder.
You can install FL Studio 21 as a separate version, and still keep all your settings and files. This is how it is supposed to be by default, and it's not as complicated as people will have you think. All you have to do is to ensure that "settings - clear data" is not selected. As long as it's not, everything should remain as it was when you're done installing FL Studio 21.
In this video, I will quickly show you (in 120 seconds!) how easy it is to update FL Studio without losing data.

Most of you probably know this already, but I've seen a lot of people debating this the past few days. Many seem to think that updating FL Studio and keeping their settings is very difficult. It's not. In fact, it's designed to do so by default, even when installing a separate installation it will keep all your settings and files unless you select the "settings" and "clear data" during the installation process. I suspect that a lot of people are rushing through so quickly that they don't take the time to read what it really says, and as they rush through the installation, they click the "settings" option, thinking this will preserve all settings, when in fact it does the opposite.. FL Studio no longer saves your files and settings in the FL Studio installation folder. It now uses a separate data folder, containing all your user data. This data folder can be shared between multiple installations (versions) of FL Studio and will remain unaffected by any installation or uninstallation of FL Studio.

After all those years I would have appreciated FLStudio to get an in-app / in-software update, where I just press update and it just does that. Update. Without an installation process. I am someone who always destroys his settings and plugins with an "update".

@@c1966m Hi Neil, no FL Studio 21 will not install over your existing FL Studio 20 installation. It will install as a separate version, so you can switch between them if you'd like, or uninstall your old FL Studio 20 version. They will both share the same data folder, which will be a separate independent folder, containing all your user data, presets etc, and the data folder will not be affected by you uninstalling either version. :)

I needed this two days ago! Everything got confusing for me and couldn't find a solution at the time, so my OCD ass rebooted my computer, stored everything on my hard drive, and just started fresh again with FL 21. I also ended up with duplicates in my files, so that's another reason why I did that

This is the first time it did a whole fresh install for me instead of just an overlay, although it did import my old folders. Did it do this because it's a whole new version number up? Also the new browser with tags is slower to me. Is there a way to turn off the visual on the Wave file previews? Also all the 3rd Party VSTs seem to load much slower. Could this be an indexing issue?

Two questions : 1) Difference between current user and all user and which should choose while updating? 2) Will there be two FL applications after installing this update or there will be only one FL application?

1) Current User should be for the current user account that you are signed into at that moment, while All Users should be for all instances of FL that are installed on your device across any user accounts that exist. Meaning, when you start your computer and you have to log into an account that has all of your data and you may or may not have to type in a password to get into it, that is an account, so like in Windows it would be a Windows Account. If you have have one or more of those accounts then FL will update their versions of FL as well when All Users are checked. It searches across your whole computer to update basically, rather than just the account you're using the installation .exe currently on. 2) As long as you leave the installation install path the same as where your current FL Studio's is installed then it will only be one. If you change the installation path then it most likely will create a second version of it. This would be good if you wanted to have both the old and newer version of a program, but the chance of you needing both in this case is not very probable so just leave it where your current FL Studio's is installed. Example installation path: C:\Program Files\Image-Line\FL Studio 21

I also have a chaos of plugin locations including a mixture of old 32bit and 64bit plugins. On a new update installation I am always unsure what locations to choose for the plugins within the installer.

It doesn't really matter. You can add multiple search folders for plugins later if you wish. :)

Hi FireWalk, I've issues with the latest update. Once I play the entire track, the timelime bar starts to glitch. So I've tried to increase the sample rate to it's max. It's getting less, but it's still there. I'm using the FocusRite ASIO output. Do you know a solution to this?

Without the Migrate drop down when installing the update my data does not show in version 21 ? It's not showing in your video either but everything is still showing in my Fl studio 20 I made sure settings was not ticked still no joy on my 3rd attempt.

I had to copy some Patcher Presets, since the preset folder is in the Image Line/FL Folder so it didn't find them but I think that's an exception. Everything else worked perfectly fine after updating. Kudos to Image Line for lifelong free updates and Firewalk for helping out

i have an fl regkey file that i wanted to use so i used it on my fl studio 21. i went to help > about > unlock with file, and used the reg file on it. it said to relaunch so i relaunched fl studio. nothing. it was still stuck in the trial version. i couldn't import projects, etc. i tried several, several times with no luck whatsoever. why is this happening?

Yes :) It will install in a separate folder (FL Studio 21) so you'll actually have both FL Studio 20 and FL Studio 21 at the same time, and can use both if you wish, or you can uninstall the previous version if you'd like to save space. They'll both use the same data folder, which will be unaffected by any installation or uninstallation.

Fl studio 21 does not install over your existing fl studio 20 installation. It installs as a new separate version. You now essentially have two separate versions installed, and when you click on your usual fl studio icon, it will open the old one. You'll find Fl Studio 21 in your " all programs" menu. You'll have to make a new shortcut for it. :)

If you are upgrading from fl studio 20 to fl studio 21 then you can also choose to keep both if you'd like, because fl 21 will install in a separate folder as a separate version.

Didnt happen as easy as this for me. It saves a seperate instance of FL studio. Then i opened the new FL studio 21, it had saved most of my settings for files and plugins to install, bit not all of them. And now im too scared to delete FL 20 incase i realise down the line that im missing somethig that i havnt spotted yet 😂

FL Studio 21 is a brand new version so it won't install over your existing FL Studio 12 installation. Follow this tutorial and install FL Studio 21. Migrate settings and then all settings etc should be the same. Once installed, you'll have both FL Studio 12.5 and 21 installed separately. Since FL Studio 21 they started using a separate data folder, where all recorded files etc are saved, as well as settings etc. As opposed to earlier versions like 12.5 that stored all this inside the FL Studio installation instead. If you want to delete your old FL Studio 12.5 installation then make sure that you don't have any temporary audio files or anything like that saved inside that installation. Some old projects might depend on them.

This is the default behavior now. They've improved this quite a bit recently so there's no need for the "migrate old settings" approach anymore since all the user files and settings are now stored in a separate data folder, and not in the FL Studio installation folder as before. This means that it doesn't matter if you're installing over an existing version, like when upgrading from say 20.8 to 20.9 for example, or installing a brand new version as a separate installation. It will just import the user settings in any case, so all your folders etc should remain. In some cases, you'll have to rescan plugins in order to get all of them to work though.

Say I open a drum kit folder but don't want anything from that kit so I just click on a different folder and it automatically closes every other open folder. There used to be an option in the small arrow menu on the left but now its gone so I was wondering if anyone knew if they had moved this somewhere or completely removed it.

The files, plugins etc are not saved in the FL Studio directory itself anymore, so you should be able to get everything back to how it was by changing your data folder to the one you had before, and then making sure that all the extra search folders are also added. Hi, i have some plugins in my list which a running in 20, but not in 21. Plug in can not open. Not installed !?! Or i get this error when i run Sylenth1: There was an error setting in the state of a VST2 plugin in the VST3 plugin "Sylenth1". What !?!

If a plugin won't open properly after updating then go to file and then scan for plugins again. Ake sure "verify plugins" is selected. "You might also have to add the registration to that plugin again when you open it afterwards. After that it should work.

@@MikeStryder If you go to "options" and then "manage plugins" then you'll see all your search folders in the upper left part there. There are some standard ones like "c:\program files\common files\vst3" and FL Studios own folders for the stock plugins etc. This will differ a bit from person to person depending on what plugins are installed, as many of them use their own VST folder. For example steinberg plugins use "c:\program files\common files\steinberg\VST2\" and then there are other common ones like c:+program files (x86)\vstplugins\ and so on. When you install new plugins, pay attention to which folder it installs to, and add that folder to the search list in FL Studio if it's not already there, or change the default installation location to a folder of your choosing. I have a folder named "MY VSTS" where I install most of my plugins. That way I have them all in one place. :)

Yes, unless you've manually chosen to save them in that folder for some reason. Presets etc will be saved in a separate data folder as well, so there shouldn't be any problems uninstalling the older version.

when i loaded my project i got 'These settings were saved with a newer version. Unable to continue loading' anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure you have the latest version installed. If you do, then did you save it using a beta version of the newest version? If that's the case then you'll have to open it with the latest beta, or wait for the newest version to be released. I generally don't advice using beta versions for critical work though.

@@FireWalkMusic forgot to mention its a torrented fl 12.. I mostly sample based & my drum patterns are still there but my arrangement on the playlist & what I did on the mixer tracks is gone

@@seyesfinest yes. Keep in mind that when you buy fl studio, all updates are free for life, so you never have to pay for a new version.

That's because FL studio 21 is a new major version. If you had FL Studio 20.8 and installed 20.9 for example, it would install over the current one. However, since FL 21 is a new major version it will install as a new separate version. That's how it is intended to work. You can still migrate over all settings as shown in this video. After you have installed FL Studio 21, open it and make sure that everything checks out and that all settings are the same. You can then delete the old version. Note that if you are upgrading from a very old version, like 12, then you might have user files in the FL Studio folder itself (recorded wav files for example) which might be critical for some older projects. In later versions of FL Studio they went away from that (thankfully) and started using the data folder instead, which is separate from the FL Studio installation itself.

@@FireWalkMusic You can install 20.9 so it doesnt replace 20.8 (or whatever lower version such as 11, 10, 9 etc). Just create a new folder inside image-line (it will place it under the 20.8 folder) name it fl studio 20.9 and install it in there, this way you can keep all lower versions such as 20.8 so you can have both or three four versions if you want.

It's not my account. They copied my logo and made a new account. I keep banning them but they keep making new ones.. my channel name is "FireWalk" not firewalk_music or firewalkmusic etc. If you go to their channel you'll see that it's new and with no content.

Hi, I don't use telegram. There have been scammers operating in the comments with fake accounts claiming to be me, trying to scam people into giving out personal info etc. The last one was firewalk_music. They even used my logo. Only messages from "FireWalk" will be authentic. The ones from firewalk_music , firewalkmusic etc are all fake. I keep reporting and banning them but they keep making new ones..

I've never had issues updating FL studio whenever there's a new update.. however, this time around something is wrong. I downloaded the update, installed the update, opened up FL, typed in my email and password and did everything as usual but this time around the update never applied. It still shows I'm using FL 20 rather than 21 and I don't see any of the new stuff from the FL 21 update. However, the splash screen where I usually enter my email/password looks a little different than it did in the past so maybe I'm doing something wrong? Anyone know? Hoping this video solves my issue. Typing all this during the dumbass ad at the start of the video.

You prolly opened 20 after installing 21. You have to open the newly installed 21 program.

Are You really just going to ignore the Plugin Database options, leaving it on default? That would be a real nightmare for someone who spent time organizing their plugins. I would consider that the most important option to cover. SMH
