How to Fix Macbook Air Keyboard Key Switch (Very Detailed)

This video goes over the reinstallation of the scissor keyboard on the macbook air. The macbook pro keyboard fix is different because the design is a little bit different. We focus more on key repair of the scissor switch, the two plastic pieces that may be separated or broken.
This is a 2014 Macbook air, it should work for other years that were pre-butterfly switch design that changed in 2016 or 2017. It should also work with other macbook pro models around the same year. I believe its 2012-2017 for the air models and a shorter span for the macbook pro models.
We don't go over much of the keycap removal of the macbook air, please reference the video below on how to remove and clean the keys on a macbook air.

This was perfect! I thought I completely broke my command key. The butterfly piece had come apart, and I didn't know what to do with the support bar when putting it back together. This helped me fix the whole thing in no time. Much appreciated!!

Thank you! I popped off one key to clean it then it laid flat. So I took it off completely even both pieces separated, your instructions were very good and I got to pop it back and it’s no longer flat! Btw I used my tweezers for this 😅

I'm trying to push the keys back on but when I put them back on they are pushed all the way down and are held instead... how do I fix this?

Thank you for the explanation. During the process I accidentally unglued the little white flexible dot and now the key is not as responsive... Do you have any idea of what glue I can use to glue it back properly ?

now there is no bounce back on the key i fixed, works but is like pushing a flat button. tried twice, no broken bits, everything right direction and snapped in. kind of annoying and very little info on it online.

Thanks for the video! It was indeed hard to fix the damn "delete" key on my MacBook air since it had a slightly different design. Following the "ridge" to match the bottom and top parts did the trick. Thanks again!

I'm back with a follow-up question :) I've noticed in your videos that the little rubber/silicone cups under the key caps (in the center of the switch) seem to be attached? Do you know what to do if one comes loose? (The one on my "A" key was unattached last time and I just put it in the center of the switch before I put the cap back on, and I think that might be why it's not working again.)

What do I do if it's simply not snapping back on? I've tried so many times now and my "V" key, after removing the cap to clean the inside, is not popping back on, I've checked and there's nothing broken, originally it popped in too much and stayed down so it wouldn't have the bounciness like the other keys, but now it's just simply not staying, I'm pretty sure only the top part of the key is locking in, but the bottom part doesn't seem to want to be popping back in. What should I do?

@@larry_berry No lol, it's still broken. I now just have a tiny piece of blu-tack on the underside of the key which is helping it stick, it's even retained the same bounciness as the regular keys (it's still a bit wonky, but much better), so it definitely helped a bunch.

This video was really helpful thank you. I may have inadvertently bent a piece of the switch in the small space where the two pieces of the scissor switch connect. After straightening it and reconnecting the keys, it works well. Should I be concerned or is it likely fine?

Thanks for this video a lot !!! I just still have a problem, my deleted key is kinda loose. Do u have any ideas why and what should i do ? (I checked the whole key and nothing seems broken, only the metal part doesn’t stay fitted on the key from the top but from the bottom)

This worked - although my Macbook Air key cap came off with the white underside attached (I did not separate the two pieces), so I was able to just press it back in place, using the hooks on the bottom first and then the top. Hope it lasts! Thank you so much because of course I lost the "H" key and did not know which side was right side up!

Eric! Im struggling because i take my macbook to repair for this and they want me to charge $250 cause they want to replace the whole keyboard when is only broke the butterfly piece of the control key. Should I try your video or sometimes the problem requieres to change the whole keyboard. If is the second case, when is ok to change the whole keyboard

fixed the letter keys i picked out stupidly thinking i could clean it, but I can't get the shift and capslock keys back in place. They click inside and never release again, and I don't want to type in caps all the time and I have to keep them taped down on my keyboard so they don't fall off. any advice on getting the tricky link bar keys to snap in correctly?

I have a 2014 / 2015 MacBook Air that has the same keys and hinges as this vid. Recently my "R" key became loose and popping slightly out of place. I took the key & hinges off , cleaned the area , the hinge is still intact and i don't see any cracks or breaks on it. But i notice the hinge does not really snap back into place , it can scissor when placed back on but still seems loose ; though if i pull up with a screwdriver it seems anchored by the hooks , so it goes on somewhat. But when i snap the "R" key back on top the key and hinges (now snapped together) basically move out of place again and seems very loose & barely hanging on. Any idea what that could be or what i could do. I have a new hinge coming any day but nothing seems obviously wrong with the current hinge.

My "m" key is no longer sticking up because I removed it to clean out debris. it still works, surprisingly, but the fact that it doesn't actually press down is incredibly annoying. can anyone help me lift the key back up so it's all springy again?

I accidentally pulled off two keys, one I only pulled off the keycap but the other I also pulled out the plastic pieces. I managed to put back the first keycap and the plastic pieces but I can't put back the second keycap. What should I do? I did find a crack on the second key cap but I don't see why it would effect whether it should go in or not. I cant tell my parents to ask a professional to fix it nor buy me a new cap because they would literally kill me for pulling out these keycaps. Also your video was really useful! This is probably a long shot, but is there any chance you have ever replaced the rubber cup itself. I do not want to use glue as I know the risk of doing so with the motherboard being directly under the keys. I have yet to find a video on the internet with a fix to this issue. Thank you for any help in advance.

How do you do the F1-F12 keys? Those scissors are turned sideways, and they are so tiny I can't figure out where to apply pressure so that they pop out

What about if the rubber round part ripped out? Its that one part that when you press on it the letter shows up. Mine is the down arrow that popped out and the rubbery broke.

Does it work as well with power key? The key is at the bottom, so the machine does not turn on properly. It turns off after 2 seconds after starting, and in order for it to turn on you need to press for at least 6 seconds otherwice it won't start.

I had a question about a dry battery on one of my games. I believe you made some videos of restoring fry batteries for some old Pokémon gameboy games. Recently my Pokémon emerald game had its battery run dry and it won’t let me save anymore. It also states it could be that the backup memory is damaged. Was asking if you knew what could possibly be the problem.
