This is intended as a full walk-through on how to approach modern broken laptop screens, including disassembly, sourcing parts, and fitting. If you're getting into laptop repair, this is the kind of stuff you want to be learning, and cheap laptops like this Pavilion 14 are very common right now.
It's a long one, but people keep telling me they like the super detailed videos, so that makes them 50min marathons!

Use a thin guitar pick to remove the bezel. That metal pry tool is not as giving and can damage the bezel or other plastics. I highly recommend locktite on the hinge screws. They will wiggle loose and create a new problem for the client.

You are truly special. You take the time to make videos that help others and you don't insult other youtubers or viewers who might have a comment that isn't to your liking. I watched a so-called 30 year long technician who constantly whines he is backlogged with work but takes 4 hours multiple times a week to do live chats - and then gets upset when someone has a contrary view or asks a question he doesn't like. Unlike him, you are not just a card swapper - you actually fix the core issue that is wrong and you do it so brilliantly and kind and helpful. To me, you are the true technician, not some blowhard that has done the same limited work for 30 years!

I personally don’t have the technical expertise or any soldering experience for this work but watching your vid’s have definitely given me a better understanding of doing a few simple repairs on a few devices at home and some I’ve been successful in doing basic fan replacements, change thermal compounds, general cleaning of HSF’s, battery replacement in my personal laptops which has saved me some $$$ (AUD) which I’m grateful for. Also want to add, if you use Loctite Threadlocker, make sure it is the weak (purple) or maybe medium (blue) type, if you are using non-Loctite brand stuff, it is the threadlocker based on lacquer not the stuff based on cyanoacrylate you want to use for small/fragile electronics.

The stretchable double-sided tape that I saw you remove is used on curved screen TVs -adhered to the front plastic cabinet on all four sides (medium adhesion) -... it is different from the tape (although also double-sided) that we use to stick the strips and/or LED strips and its main characteristics to take into account in this case are: it has stronger adhesion and supports more temperature and/or heat because it has to adhere to both the strip and the metal cabinet at the bottom that serves as a heatsink and an error (in my opinion fatal on TVs with a screen of 50 inches or more) that you frequently observe is that this metallic cabinet located at the bottom (as a rear cover) in many cases does not have ventilation slots... I do not want to violate the youtube rules so don't leave the links... thank you very much for sharing... greetings

I’m sure they would be perfectly fine to hold the panel to the backplate but I’m not sure about how they would handle the heat. I only call them command strips jokingly… Those are more of a porous foam composition than the far more rubbery genuine part HP sells. Some research needs to be done on that though. A more affordable alternative sure would be nice. Did I mention that they don’t always send the strips with a panel replacement order? Yea. That’s a thing.

Actually ChiMei and Innolux have been merged into one company in 2010. My Innolux N140HCG-GQ2 reports CMN ChiMei N140HCG-GQ2 in EDID data, and it is an original panel, marked with Innolux and Lenovo FRU part numbers. Also, replacing the tape around the bezel is a good measure, that's tru for these type of HP laptops, and especially on all thinkpads from T440 (4th gen) and above. Tips for thinkpads: the bezel on older machines (2014-2016, up to T460) have a 2 part bezel with screws that go underneath the decorative slim fromt bezel, and it has to be removed. Since T470 and above, the screws no longer go through the plastic frame, the whole bezel can be removed (front sheet+frame) should be removed together.

The 3M command strips are like that, pull and they release from whatever they are connected to without any damage. I'm in the same boat as you I'm in Idaho, USA, so I order from ebay or US based companies, I don't big volume either. So I just order one when I need it.

Excellent video. Beautifully clear and measured. A shame the customer didn't go for extra RAM while you had the thing open. M.2 upgrade too? Still, having benefitted from your excellent work they're bound to be back for those upgrades. You should be able to use silk thread or dental floss to take the bezel off the panel. Works for dashcams on windscreens too. With regards to putting the double-sided tape on the metal part of the panel is it also because you don't want the glue to bleed through and damage the panel?

While most of people wont even notice the change in panel type, you may wanna ask the client how are using the laptop and what for before doing a panel switch.IPS panels have their drawbacks, like they are generally more power hungry, so it may affect battery charge duration.They have slower refresh rates and are more propense to ghosting, so if your client is an old school FPS gamer it may not like the new panel that much.And they are much harder to calibrate properly, so a multimedia editing type of person could find annoyingl to have to re-adapt to the new panel. But most of the time is just a great upgrade though and hope your client appreciated the extra effort you put to not only repair it, but also improving it.Great vid as always

Broadly speaking, yes. There are advantages to _good_ non-IPS screens... however, the vast majority of consumer laptops don't have good screens, they have the cheapest LCDs money can buy. It's a miracle that 1080p is finally standard. But yea, when working on higher-end stuff this is something to be considered!

HP 450 and 250 are like this, so annoying. Schools I support use them solely. Give me the thick bezel and screws back!! Thankfully I've got that many spares from damages I can go in heavy handed and speed things up, don't need to worry about ordering replacements. Never had tape on the top by the camera though, that's one to look out for! Also didn't know about the battery, not hand one short in me yet thankfully, thanks for the tip! Releasing the tape, wrap it around a screwdriver or similar. It's way more gentle turning the screwdriver to wind the tape on rather than pulling. Never found good supplies for stretch release tape. I'm using cheap black double-sided electronic tape from Amazon. Yet to have to repair one I've replaced already so don't know how easy they'll be to get back off with the cheap tape.

Yea, this bezel would've been a nightmare to do in-place. I will often try for an in-place removal, but also in recent times I've found it's often faster to just get on with removing the display assembly, rather than spend 15mins trying to get the bezel off in-place, only to realise you need to remove the assembly anyway. If I take the back panel off and see that the mobo needs to come out, I'd definitely try for an in-place removal. This is all assuming that we're practised though, beginners should always go for assembly-off.

I have a separate question regarding video on laptops. If it turns on but no video on screen or hdmi/vga/etc. output, how do you diagnose whether it is actually a screen (if it looks visually ok), ribbon, chipset issue without having to purchase and try all the them?
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 2 жыл бұрын
If you disconnect the internal display and still get no output on HDMI, then it's very unlikely to be a display issue. At that point you'd be looking at chipset, BIOS, etc, issues.

You can buy the "command strips" for laptop LCD mounting directly from HP Part Store, but of course, like everything else, it's over priced. Wait until you have to repair an 840 G7 for HP.....the infamous double sided tape that's holding the bezel to the backplate is so tough, it will peel the anti-glare layer from the panel damn near every time. I've even started sending machines to the HP depot where the LCD has to be removed without damaging it, and even they end up putting in a new panel....I'm guessing because they broke it too! So tired of all the adhesive used in modern laptops...pressure clips work just fine.
@ToddReynolds420
@ToddReynolds420 2 жыл бұрын
I actually ordered a cheap low power heat gun recently just for the purpose of seeing if that will enable me to get those bezels off without destroying the panels. As you can imagine, if I have to replace the camera/mic assembly as a warranty repair and I break the panel trying to get to it, I’m down nearly $200 for a new genuine HP panel. If the depot breaks it for the same repair…they eat the cost, so it’s a no brainer until I can consistently remove the bezel with no panel damage. It’s super frustrating. My customers have to wait the additional few days for the depot service that I could handle same day IF they weren’t in love with glue. Just to be clear, I’ve been repairing laptops for almost 20 years and this is the first model that I’ve ever broken a panel on ever, and not just one. After the 4th time, I just conceded that the design was the problem and that was confirmed when I received the depot repairs back and saw new panels on every one of the parts replaced lists. I tried fighting back with HP citing the depot’s tendency to break panels at the same 100% rate as I was seeing in an effort to get my $800 back that I spent on those 4 warranty jobs. I’m sure you already know they told me to kick rocks. The really REALLY frustrating aspect of this is if they would source dependable cameras/mics that wouldn’t just stop working for NO reason less than a year after deployment, I wouldn’t have a need to even remove the panels! I’ve replaced more cameras in the past 2 years than I did the entire 17+ years prior. I get it…people working remotely now suddenly means that these embedded cameras are actually being utilized and thus, there will be failures. I just never imagined it would be as prolific a repair as it has become. If an HP representative is reading this (yea, right) please ask your design team to make enterprise models with sturdy panels, screws (can’t believe I have to ask for screws) for mounting panels, high quality cameras and mics and NOT the cheapest SSDs they can find. Enterprise machines are deployed to people who have little to no respect for the condition of the device. They get constantly dropped, sat on, run into the deepest parts of Hell while being used in their laps, on a blanket (“It’s called a laptop right? Durrrr”) and just general apathy for what are essentially the most budget machines that can be built that will “do the job”. They need a bit of resilience that has gone bye bye in the last few years. To be fair, HP is not the only manufacturer guilty of these practices. The insistence that laptops be as thin and light as possible while still performing like the desktop replacements of yesteryear is asinine. Make them sturdy and relatively reliable…that’s the hero we need, even though we don’t deserve it when we complain about a 4 lb device being “heavy”.

My screen didn't have any pull tabs.. and I didn't have to take it out in pieces... Got it out in almost perfect condition... It did fight me and take about 15 mins tho... A tip I would give to others in my position is to heat the lid from the back with either a hair dryer or hot air work station if you have.. That will weaken the glue and give you a chance.... Alcohol I just don't see helping you much or how you'd get it in there...... A good pry tool and hot air is the only way if you have no pull tabs... It's not fun but doable...

I just replaced a display on a Dell 15. It was 60hz 1080p with 40 pin connector, but was a touch display so I figured the extra pins were for touch.

Also, the sad reality is that most sellers of screens on Ebay will happily sell screens with defects but given an "A" rating. I don't think I've ever gone incident free on a screen from Ebay here in The US. Regardless of seller it seems that it's really 50/50 as to whether you'll get a debt-free screen or not. So you can buy direct for an insane price or roll the dice on Ebay. Just the reality of the situation, sadly.

That's disappointing to hear. I generally have a good experience with eBay UK, only had a couple of bad screens after buying many many. This is why I encourage people to share alternative suppliers though - may well help someone who has had no luck with eBay!

"Do the job properly..." is a bit rich, considering how many times you've said "Ibecause I can't be bothered..." in your videos.

Having to remove the glued on rubber strip, that's really shonky design, big thumbs down HP. And tape around the screen too, omg smh. And to add insult to injury, they use forever-snapping-stretch-tape.

I'm getting the audio problems as well, I think the video render might've been bodged because I'm also seeing video artifacts from time to time.

Yea there was a problem with the recording rig (it's been fixed now) and I knew the cameras were a bit choppy, but didn't know the audio was affected until I got to editing😭
