Why is the electricity in one room not working? On this video I show you what to do when there is no electricity in a room but the breaker is good and not tripping.

Lex, this is a prime example of why most electricians prefer to pigtail each receptacle that feeds another device. Had that receptacle been pigtailed in the box, ONLY that one receptacle would have been affected by that burned wire, every other device would have still had current unless the burned wire was at the wire nut at the pigtail in the outlet box. It's also MUCH easier to find problems when a circuit is pigtailed in each box instead of "pass thru" wired by using all 4 screws on each receptacle.

You re correct. Always wire-nut all conductors thru to the next box, then pig-tail the outlet to the splice. Eliminates this problem.

i’m an apprentice electrician and one of my outlets in my house haven’t been working since i moved there 2 years ago . i decided to take a look and fix it since i’m confident i could do something so ‘simple’. did a continuity test and my neutrals beeped to another outlet and my lights. however my hot wouldn’t beep to any of the outlets or lights. keep in mind the 3rd outlet in the room is connected to a completely seperate breaker than the others. i checked all splices and connections and even replaced my outlets and still nothing. It’s a head scratcher, but still looking for the disconnect and i won’t give up until i do!

to find an open neutral, turn all breakers and main off(safety/meter/tool saver), then use continuity meter/beeper and go from ground to neutral on all the problem the outlets(switch box/device) until you find the last outlet or switch box with continuity from neutral to ground(through the bond at panel). it's often at that location where the loose wire is, if not it will be the next one down. use a long wire and you can test from outlet to outlet across the room until you find the open also (this method for an open hot too) or you can use a tone generator and the amplifier probe, everything at or past the problem spot will be screaming loudly.

Hey bro, your video and explanation on what could cause no power in one outlet and power in the other one. I followed your theory and went to the bathroom in my case because that was the closest to the room, fair enough the neutral line in the first outlet was out completely. If you wired the receptacles using pigtails and wire nuts you would have only one hot wire, one neutral wire, and one ground wire connected to each receptacle. Then only the receptacle with the loose wire will be affected. That is the preferred method and is safer.

Thank you for the video. I learned from the video. My house had similar problem. I would have no idea if I didn't watch this video. One of my room totally has no electricity (both light, fan and outlet). One of outlet of the next room and one outlet in the living room and two outlet in the basement have no electricity. The breakers are on and GFCI is on. I opened the outlets without electricity one by one. Finally, when I opened the 5th outlet, I found the problem. The outlet is loose and melted. So I turned off the electricity and replaced the outlet. When turned the electricity back on, all the problems are solved. Outlet, light and fans are working fine!

as taught in the mid 90's we always spliced all wiring and left pigtails just for the outlet/switch/devices. that way no current ever passed through outlets/devices to downstream and for that exact reason, of course you cannot limp wrist the wire nuts on and make a good connection, so eat your wheaties :)) I always hated splicing days, even with the wing-nuts caps and driver tool for cordless drill, that was a ton of work stripping all the wire/jacket and splicing out. yuck

I do maintenance for a 520 room hotel, and actually had a loose neutral few weeks ago. Receptacle wasn't working, but breaker was not tripped. Plugged in my Klein receptacle tester and it showed no neutral. Sure enough, neutral was loose and burned off the receptacle. But since all the outlets are pigtailed to the receptacles instead of the wiring being fed THRU each receptacle to the next one, if one burn up it doesn't affect any other outlets. Now I see why so many electricians prefer to use pigtails vs both sets of screws on the receptacle.

Hey Lex, What if only one outlet is failing? There are no other electrical issues found in this home. The outlet failing is a ground fault outlet and has not tripped. The black wire is hot at 70VAC. Hi can you help me out please? Thank you for the videos. So about couple months now it all started from the master bedroom light and a wall outlet on one wall that stopped working. Then since then electrical around the house stopped working. For instances, the kitchen one wall with an outlet where we plugged the fridge and microwave suddenly stopped working. Then we used an extension cord on the other wall (left side) where sink is so it can reach the fridge…it worked but keeps going out and we thought maybe it’s cause the extension cord is heavy and may not plug in tight and we wiggled as we wiggle it will turn on and off so we taped it to hold in place…that outlet now is dead too. Then now I have a different extension cord with just 1 plug I use to plug the fridge in and it connected to the outlet on the right side of the sink where the disposal switch is (oh and the disposal doesn’t work but has power maybe that just need replacement), anyways and from there just last night the outlet on the wall facing the front door stopped working and an outlet on the left of that wall only 1 plug outlet works but can clearly see black things like it exploded so I unplug it now today after I saw how dark the damage is and same night last night the dining room and kitchen lights (both separate areas) stopped working, hallway bathroom light stopped working, my sons room light and outlets are not working. I watched KZfaq how to check using a multimeter and I have one that from harbor freight called cen tech a red one and I set it to ACV 750 and tested the dark one that looks blown up and top plug one comes out at 125 and bottom plug zero reading or no numbers come on and it doesn’t work when attempted to plug something in to test only top one works. Then as I went to test the wall outlet in the dining room I inserted the black lead probe on the left of plug and RIGHT when I inserted the RED lead probe in at first no reading so I thought maybe I didn’t put in far to where probe is not making contact so I push a little and the outlet SPARKED in my face and outlet is also black now with the right side of the hole looking so much bigger! Like it suppose to look like a parallel line but now it’s a circle. And the multimeter the red probe metal part is damage. Do you think you can help me? I have reset all the gfi 1 main one that turns the other 2 on I guess cause if the main gfi isn’t on the other 2 will not reset at all. Other 2 gfi only lets me reset and actually clicks if I reset the main one that has the red and black button. I also checked the power panel switch box outside to see if any of those switch are in the middle and all are turn on but I did turn off and on all switches that said ;lighting, kitchen, washer and dryer, etc. still none of the lights work and outlet still not working. We have home warranty and already requested service but taking too long. I’ve contacted the service company and left a message as they have not even contact me for an appointment.

Make sure all GFCI outlets are reset. They have a reset button on them. They're usually around water sources so in bathrooms, kitchens and even outside on porches. If they're good, you'll need to find a loose wire on an outlet. Tedious job for sure. I hope everything works out for you mee chang!

Technically, those devices (NEC defined) are “receptacles” not an outlet. The assembly of box conductors and device(receptacle) is a receptacle outlet. There are also light outlets and smoke detector outlets.

It's been 10 years since I've done EXIT signs and I need to brush up on the routine. I found out it was the wrong style sign that was given to me by the manager. So, I took the video down. The sign needed stair lights pointing down on the stairs and the one I hung didn't have them. Now I know! I don't want mis-information out there so I pulled the video. 👍😎👍 Good to hear from you David!

Im trying to fix my lights and all the outlets are fine but i got a power tester thing and none have power running to them so im worried its not an outlet problem and ill have to pay a lot to have someone come out and fix it

Yes. Sometimes they'll be wired to a light switch. Turn the light switch on and see if they get power. If not, you'll need an electrician.

@@LexVance after a lot of researching I believe it has to be loose neutral. All of my house except the back 2 rooms have power and those rooms are completely blacked out all outlets and ceiling lights. Going to wait till the morning to get a better look at the breaker. Oddly my breaker only has 4 switches and they all are connected by a trip plastic cover. It is a slightly older house so there’s a chance it’s going bad but just interest how only the bedrooms on the back end of the house are affected even the bathrooms on the back next to them are fine. I also reset the gfci’s on 2 outlets inside and nothing
