Does your favorite chair move (drop) down towards the floor as you sit on it over time. If it does and you constantly need to keep adjusting it then the pneumatic cylinder is more than likely worn out. You can replace the cylinder or use this method shown here to get the job done. Doing so will fix the chair height so that is no longer adjustable using the handle but will never move down on you again. It only takes a few minutes and some free or cheap bits.

I fixed my chairs by adding a common radiator hose clamp to the rod part of the cylinder. This way the chair cant go do because the clamp blocks it. 99 cents and less work than cutting tubes and taking the chair apart.

I followed your tutorial & fixed the second hand desk chair I bought online. Now it doesn't sink anymore, thanks to the PVC drain pipe I put in place. :) Great tutorial & very easy to follow. :)

Worked like a charm. I used a Miter saw and got quick perfect cuts took 5 minutes thanks!

Great video! I fixed my chair! Just remember to put your chair all the way up when you start working. That threw for a couple of minutes.

This was an easy fix. Took longer to run to Home Depot than to do the repair. This is my sewing chair, which I like. Just was tired of sinking 4” every hour. On to test it now.

That's a great fix and an even better trick with the paper. I thought you'd tape it on. May be another way, in case you're bad with a sharpie! Video composition was also on par. Thanks!

Nice video and instructions. My middle bar has been scraping on the floor. Question: my bar which goes through the base is not nearly as flush as yours. My base is approximately half way on the bar and doesn't seem to be movable. I tried hammering the bar to move further up but it doesn't budge. think if the fitting was higher up it would fix the problem. What to do?

Any suggestions about fixing the wheels if they stop turning or if the plastic part that holds them into place breaks?

There is a kit that you can buy online that replaces the old pneumatic piston with the "old time" screw type rod. I bought one, I think with shipping it was about 30 dollars U.S. It works okay, its just they are not made for tilting chairs. Google pneumatic strut replacements. That should get you in the right direction, You can also order new hydraulic shocks for your chairs there.

Hey Steve! I have the same exact chair! I had thought of doing the same thing to mine! At first, mine would drop gradually too. Although, after raising and lowering repetitiously, over a period of a month, it stopped doing the dropping ordeal. Know the damned thing wants to raise up on it's own all by its self when i vacate the chair! With that said, i believe that the chair is actually nitrogen charged for shock such as to oppose force or weigh bearing and that the real problem that exists is an internal valve that is malfunctioning. So, once i get up out of the chair, all it wants to do is raise up! Ain't that neat! So this chair remains to be a pain in the ass. I guess i need a steel cable restraint, bungee cord and a welder now! What do yah think of that one??? It's either that or take the mono shock off and replace it with a coil spring out of a car......hahahaha!

I just used a pair of "curved jaw" Vise grip pliers. Clamp them around the piston at the bottom where it enters the tube.

The fact that the chair doesn't have its own height locking mechanism is a real insult. They either sink down, or creep up when I walk away for 5 mins. The fault has existed for 20 years and they still keep selling them like this in the thousands. I have had bosses at work, who really don't need anything more to make them angry.

It's think the customer is always screwed up. I paid so much money for the chair, and now the chair is going almost to the floor. And this things happen when your don't have money to buy another one. And chair is the thing that you can't go cheap, unless you want to damage your back.
