Thanks, I just saved my favorite chair! Your technique worked fine, with one change. The rubber mallet didn't remove the base. I've had the chair for about 10 years, so everything was pretty well seated. So I turned the chair upside down, and tapped the cylinder with a regular hammer, using a block of wood in between to spread the load. That worked great. I did have to sort of hang the chair, by putting the base on a couple of 2x4's that I had placed across two trash bins to hold them about 4ft. off the floor.

I watched one vide just to refresh my mind. I did one of these 15 -20 years ago and was hoping my memory worked. As i worked on the chair several other videos came up. This was the first that recommended spraying with a lubricant, and we all know WD40 is the spray of most. I'd already done that, but this was the first of about four videos that suggested the lubricant. That was the key to making the job easier!

I am looking forward to trying this. I have several of this type of chair in my home. Two of which I bought from Office Depot/Office Max over 25 years ago. They are very comfortable. However, they started sinking. Secondly, on the black one, the one I use much more often, the seat loosened from the pneumatic cylinder dumping me, a senior citizen to the floor. The chair itself is in prime condition. I see no compelling reason why it cannot be repaired. Most of the new office chairs I see today are just plain junk. I would rather attempt a repair than replace an otherwise perfectly good chair.

I have a chair, made circa 1978 that my 400pound+ son broke the spider base. I got the bottom of the cylinder out of the 'dead' spider without too much trouble. However, the top of the cylinder in the tilt mechanism of the seat has defied removal. I have used Blaster penetrating oil, WD-40 Penetrating oil, applied a propane torch to the thing, put it in a big bench vice and attacked it from above with both penetrating oil sprays and a punch whacked with a 2.5 pound sledge. Sprayed the expletive deleted thing with AeroKroil super bearing removal hyper penetrating oil all, put a 4 ft cheater on my monkey wrench and nothing as caused the upper end of the cylinder to budge a micron. Having said all that, your video is pretty good. Sometimes you have to remove the clip from the cylinder base, suspend the thing in a big machinist's vice and whack the hell out of the bottom of the cylinder to get it to release. Let your penetrating oil/fluid set over night if you have to. As the saying goes: Use a bigger hammer. I like the 2.5 pound mini-Mjollnir myself to "educate" things. If you have any ideas on how to break loose the top of my gas cylinder I'd appreciate it.

@@theBRT1955 I gave up and just replaced the frame and cylinder. Torched the thing, used Aerokroil pentrating oil over several days, worked up to a 4 ft cheater on the pipe wrench. It never budged a micron. Bought a length of quarter inch thick 3" wide steel and made a fitting to attach the seat back rest to the new seat base. I got whooped by the stuck cylinder, but the chair is now useable and adjustable. Good luck with your stubborn 'beastie'.

@@SteinerHaus after 4 or 5 doses of PB Blaster over a period of about three weeks and with the help of my son (who has squat lifted 405 -just to paint the picture for you), we finally achieved success. It was really just waiting for the chemical to seep in and do its work. But like your experience, the first few times we tried, it didn't budge "a micron". So, the chair is back up in my happy wife's office and all's well. Thanks for your wishes of good luck - that may have helped more than either of us know. Have a great day!

That's funny man. I'd been thinking about doing it. Unfortunately even a few months of use has basically friction welded the damn thing together. I've had the piston replaced like 3 times. They only last a month before they begin to fail. Kinda want to see if i can seal it in the highest position so it cant move down anymore. See, my base is made of steel. So it really seizes up and gets stuck. I think i had to hammer on mine for a good 40 minutes last time I had to remove it.
@thebumpchannel
@thebumpchannel 2 жыл бұрын

@@thebumpchannel Good suggestion. I did the same thing. But instead of PVC, I used a Steel Pipe Socket.

Hey Bump, I just want to replace the seat but use the existing cylinder. Do you know if I remove the cylinder, will it get damaged, or can I reuse it?

First, they are not universal. You better measure the body length before you order (here is a video how: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ba6mlZeYya_DmmQ.html). Second, the black part is not actually the cylinder, it's a casing for the outside part of the piston. The casing can have different diameters, so it's not smart to remove it from the chair's base. Moreover, reusing the existing casing makes the replacement much easier. You don't need a mallet or anything, just remove a small clip at the bottom of the casing, and it will come off.

Do be warned, this will only work if your base is made of cheap plastic. Decent plastic or metal won't work. You'd need to remove a clip at the bottom of the base to remove it, and then dethatch the gas cylinder from there.

Before I replace the cylinder, on my chair, it feels as though the lever is not connected to anything at all. Could this be a non-cylinder issue?

My current chair isn't even a year old and the hydraulic is already completely fucked. Thanks for your guide, I'm about to leave a scathing review on my terrible chair's Amazon page. Oh what a surprise, the chair isn't listed any more. I have fallen for yet another Amazon scam.

@thebumpchannel

Not sure why that would cause to sink. Sounds like cylinder is leaking now.
@HBPLUS
@HBPLUS 2 жыл бұрын
@@thebumpchannel there is nothing leaking though. is there liquid inside them or gas. but if it was either of them why after 4 days still sinks just a little but not all the way down. maybe it contains a solvent? and messed the piston.

@@thebumpchannel Cheap metal. I also should have waited with the Liquid Wrench longer than I did before I started torqueing on it with a pipe wrench. I appreciate your video.
