How to Fix Oil Leaks: Crankcase Breather Edition

A customer writes, "My crankcase is puking oil. Help! I vented the crankcase breather down the back of the motor like you suggested and now I'm getting excessive oil coming from what I believe is the hose and higher RPMs -- to the point of it coating the swingarm and sidewall of my rear tire. Any ideas on where to start to get this corrected?"
Well, SH*T. That's not good!
Luckily, I've encountered this situation before... and out of the dozen or so times people have hit me up with this problem... every single time it's because someone over-filled their oil. You've gotta be really careful when you're filling your oil - there's different amounts for different processes.

1. Make sure you're putting in the right amount of oil in your bike

I have a small 4 stroke engine and I think my problem started with a simple breather hose being kinked and pressure built up to the point that it blew the crank shaft gasket out as there is a bad leak even after fixing the hose that was blocking the pressure and I can not get the screws loose on the crank case! Hope I used all the right names for all parts specified and hope the problem is something easy to fix as it that!

I measured my oil exactly with a graduated painters cup. Blew 1/2 a quart through the breather today. Kinked hose and high rpm.

It is wet sumping . If it has sat for long periods without starting the oil seeps down from the oil tank past the checkball into the crankcase. Being a dry sump it is now sucking the oil from the crankcase and spewing it out the breather via the blow by hose.

Went to look at 1989 Vulcan 750 today. Oil dripping out of hose by air filter Nike hasn't been ridden in 5 months. Backfiring too which they said was unusual. And it won't idle without choke on 20% How long before weeping oil issue stops?

@@EvilTwin123usually with frequent riding the oil stops doing that if you have a crank breather but if its going through the carb it’s something else, back fires is probably a carb blockage or tuning issue or even the valves are out of there specified clearance. The older the bike usually means more tuning more frequently

Hoping you can help me. I've got an R1150RS and oil is puking out of the filler...and no, I didnt over fill it with oil. Through a lot of searching, the only thing I can narrow it down to is a crankcase breather tube that might be blocked. I've looked in the air filter box and it looks all dry in there. I'm also burning oil sometimes at startups. I can't locate this breather tube... help me please, you're my only hope. Luke

Look up oil "sumping" if your oil level is okay and still have flow coming from the PCV.

Awesome video I have a 00 Yz400f dirtbike and same problem bike runs great no engine trouble at all and the oil isn’t over full put the exact amount it called for and still is doing it not pooring out but definitely more than should lost for words I guess lol

No I did not over fill the oil. Started after a few seconds, POW the oil blew the oil fill cap off and oil all over the garage wall. So what is the problem? To me seems like the oil is getting back into the oil holding tank. Then pressure builds up and then POW, what can I do?

Mine just last week out of NO-WHERE ... just started to pour out oil from the valve cover breather while sitting there reving the engine OR just getting into 1st gear and going forward. It literally pours it out.

I just eliminated the pair valve/Desmog setup on my 2004 VTX 1300 and was wondering if you know if that would plug or block the crank case breather. The kit that I installed said nothing about it but I want to make sure it’s not a problem.

i opened up the drain plug but no oil cam out.. so i put more oil, and that was a problem.. i still hear a scratching sound from piston, which i would assume no oil to lubricate, my best guess? somethings clogging the oil, seems like alot of compression, I could be wrong, which i always am :\ .. i'm gonna open the plug again see what happens

i thought it could be from blow by but my motor has plenty of compression i plugged iy then when i took of the plug it was like a air compressor it just shot out heaps of compressed air whatever you do do not plug the crankcase vent

Literally just put oil in my bike and rode back from Napa and got oil all down my leg. I definitely over filled it after watching this lmaooo. Bike also starting bogging out at high rpm’s because of it as well. Hopefully once it reaches the normal level it’ll be fine 😂

See I have a Yamaha 1982 maxima and my oil is going into my filter or airbox and when I started my pistons are sounding like they are scratching or scraping against the cylinder so I want to know how I can fix that or get it re-lined because I have a trip coming up soon and I need to make sure I’m safe on the road

Ha, having this exact issue based on his exact advice. And the "to much oil" is not an answer... The bike will run itself dry, overheat and the piston will seize up. I'm thinkin a catch can type system might let it run off somewhere and let it feed it back into the crank.

My crankcase breather will completely drain my tank so it can't because it's overfilled any other suggestions of why it's doing this? Also the guy I bought it from didn't even have the lines hooked up to the oil filter he had them all rerouted is this why?

2022 Triumph Scrambler, 1200XC with an oil leak at the drive sprocket shaft. I noticed this leak in the showroom before I even bought the bike. Where are the pressure relief valves on this particular motorcycle? I’ve noticed oil seeping from the gasket on the bottom cover. It’s not much but just enough for me to notice a difference in color along the line where the gasket is. That’s excessive pressure because it doesn’t leak at idle. The drive sprocket shaft leaks after each ride, more so if I’ve been in the highway. The gasket seeping happens after a highway run. What could possibly be blocked or malfunctioning on a brand new motorcycle that would cause an oil leak because of access crank case pressure ?

If you get some junk holding your float needle open. The fuel can drain into the motor if the petcock is left open. Same result, puking fuel oil as pressure builds.

I have this problem. The crankcase ventilation is puking out oil. The difference here is that it will puke out oil until it gets low on oil. LIke it wants to puke it all out. It only does this under high rpm under a load situation (revving the motor in the driveway doesn't do it) it won't leak unless high rpm AND high load. Then it spits it all out until its low. Does anyone know what could cause this. Initially, I did overfill it and went on a long road trip. The bike had a history of going through oil (KLR650) so thats why i usually kept it full or a little overfull so that it wouldn't get low as fast. Now, it dumps what looks like a quart out in a matter of seconds once it has the condition met listed above. UPDATE: This ended up being a crack in the piston in between the rings. It was undetectable until I pulled the jug. I couldn't see the damage until the piston came out of the jug.

Interesting, was the bike making any blue smoke? Or was the compression just getting shoved into the crank? Unsure how all that works, I would assume if compression air is getting into the crank you would also get oil into the cylinder?

Unless were talking shovel heads and older then it probly leaks past your check ball in your oil pump. If you leave it sitting threw winter without starting it you'll have a puddle.

Overfilled my 97 vulcan 1500,started leaking oil from under the top of the front cylinder under the chrome covers,it didnt come out of the breather so did it just blow a gasket or some sort of seal? I drained it to the proper amount and still oil leaking fast out of the same spot,thanks for any advise you can give me,dont want to do a 10hour top gasket if I can help it,cheers

Fuel is getting past your piston rings or valves. Could be excess exhaust gas getting past the rings into the crank case and causing to much pressure

welp... the things that come to mind - Partially restricted oil return line. Wrong oil filter. Oil level too high in tank. improperly installed, upside down piston ring shitty bore job id look at that stuff before making a catch can honestly.

Crankcase vent leaking for me but not my engine oil- that’s darker than what’s coming out pretty sure it’s my primary’s. But been a year since I did my change and it was leaky out of my derby cover anyways so by now it’s low no reason for it to push out oil. Hit a deer two weeks ago didn’t drop the bike but he went up the right side of my bike- 03 sporty 883 anything you could think of? Possibly building too much crank pressure from the switch at the filter?

First bike was an 883 with the 1200 kit, my dumb newbie self got a new air cleaner and oem bolts didn’t fit. Ran solid bolts in the head, about 3 miles down the road my oil tank exploded.

I been having an issue with my main shaft seal leaking on my big inch motor even after just replacing it and putting some rtv silicone on the lip the stator bolts too. I don’t have any bad blow by in my breathers which I just run the open bolt with mesh screens from speed dealer on it. Any ideas on that? Iv replaced both main shaft seal and spacer and leaks first ride.

Maybe the surface is scored and allowing oil past, maybe the shaft isn't perfectly round. Hard to say, can't really diagnose anything via comments, sorry man!

Mine leaves the 3 ft. Puddle and is not overfilled. It will puke the oil until it's dry as a bone. That's the first thing someone's going to check. I need diagnostic help. Someone from another platform said cracked piston in between the rings. Starting to think this might be it.

@@shannamassie7104 it was a cracked piston. It ran pretty good, that's why I couldn't figure it out. It wasn't until I actually pulled the piston out of the jug that the piston fell apart in between the oil rings. It got crazy hot probably from running lean. Even though the machine wasn't running hot, the piston must have been. It practically melted and crumbled at that joint. I got lucky and listened to another poster who had the same problem. It wasn't burning the oil and ran good so I didn't suspect the piston. Sorry for the bad news bit your piston is likely hosed. I tried the pcv mod but nothing worked.

I have a 2004 Bigdog ridgeback with a 117 ci S&S and I have oil in the air cleaner. One hose runs from the rear head to a one way check valve then to the back of the air cleaner . The other hose goes from the front head to a port on top of the carburetor. The oil is filled to the bottom of the fill neck as recommended by Bigdog. Is there another option I can use to stop the leak. Right now I have a Kuryakin 9931 catch can installed to the rear cylinder head. Any advice would be appreciated.

Would this still be the case if the crank case breather started leaking after lowsiding the bike? I slipped with the bike on a turn when it was snowing and saw no external damage to the hose or rest of the bike.

You mentioned motor issues. How come you didn't mention perhaps you should get a compression and leak down test to ensure you motors condition in regards to things like proper ring seal on the pistons etc..

what is "seating out"? if your oil is milky you likely have bigger issues, that indicates water is in the oil, your coolant system is leaking into the oil.

I have a 92 FXSTC & I had tires done at HD.. well they topped off my oil and Iv had it piss out of every spot possible. Sucked some out with a Turkey baster & it has seemed to solve my problems… for now. Ride safe everyone. Read those manuals.

You need the owners manual. My 2006, 1100 Spirit is 3 qt., 8 oz. with oil and filter change. Yours should be the same. After starting bike back up a couple minutes check the oil. Oil is checked holding it up right without threading dipstick in, NOT leaning on kickstand. It should be a little below the full mark. Don't lose the o - ring on the dipstick.

@@devlonmoore7578 It really sucks when you don't get the owners manual when you buy something. I was fortunate and did get it with the low mileage Honda. Lot's of good info. Many times you can find an owners or service manual for most anything on line. I bought Service Manuals for both of my Harley's from the dealer. I asked the Honda dealer for this bike and Honda doesn't offer one. That is why I'm sooo thankful for people like TJBRUTALCUSTOMS that take time to show us how to fix bikes ourselves. @@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS is it suppose to have a plug at the end of the breather hose?i saw many with a plug but i saw a video saying it should not be plugged because it will build up pressure. Which one is true

Look up sumping let my bike sit too long and it just blows oil out the air filter hard to start too get it stated and let it blow out till it stops

@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS I have a 91 fat boy if I let it sit over a month without starting it it will blow oil out the breather on the bottom. If I start it regularly after it’s fine
