Thanks for this video. I now have the external breather installed in my bike. I chose the filter. I drilled the holes and installed the brass hose connectors into my SE Chisel air cleaner. I routed the hose up over the throttle body, under the tank, and over to the plastic shelf behind the right side cover. The filter sits in a small rubber made bowl. After a few hundred miles, I inspected it and logged some more miles after adding some sea foam to the tank and spraying some B-12 throttle body and carb cleaner into the throttle body. It's very gratifying to find the air filter dry as bone without any oil contamination. I checked the Breather Filter again and it was wet with a bit of oil in the bowl. A quick clean up and she is good to go again. I may end up getting the catch can but it all depends on how well the filter set up works. So far I'm a happy Harley Rider. Thanks again

Thanks for the video. I just ordered a breather set from you guys and am looking forward to installing it. My bike is a 2013 Fatboy with about 13k km (so, only about 8k miles). I’m wondering if any carbon that may have built up might eventually burn off, or do you think I need to consider mechanical or chemical solutions? I don’t have any noticeable tuning issues at the moment.

Glad you're liking the videos, and we appreciate your business. It will burn off. Periodic higher rpm runs (once fully warmed up) will help it burn off more quickly. I do not use chemical solutions. They can be effective, and 99.5% of the time there is no problem with them...but that little chance that a big piece will break off and damage a valve or valve stem...that is not worth it to me.

First I just want to say you guys are the best when it comes to custom builds, more experience and knowledge than anyone else IMO and you share that with the world. My question is what are your opinions on running the hose near the chain? Would you suggest using a filter if my goal is to lubricate the chain?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
I would be hesitant to use the blow-by to "oil" the chain. Depending on what bike you have it may spit enough oil or not. Then it is a matter of what it is spitting, some of it can be a really gummy mess. Take a look at the two linked photos below to see what typically comes out. Also, most chains now days are sealed, and what little lubrication they need is specialized for the rubber seals. www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/wysiwyg/Catch-Can_Glop_1.jpg www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/wysiwyg/black_oil_from_catch_can.jpg

@@DKCustomProducts makes sense but how about if I’m running the filter over the chain? As long as it’s cleaned during services I don’t see how the little bit of dirt on the filter would be much different than the normal dirt and debris the chain picks up from operation

@@DKCustomProducts ok thanks. Are you saying if I run the external filter over the chain, the filter will work to clean the blow-by of any of the nastiness that might be coming out of the blow-by? Would be a trick setup to put that wasted oil to good use
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
@@exzackt Yes, the filter would clean up a bit of the nastiness, but it might clean it up so much that not much oil would end up on the chain at all. If your bike is a pretty significant spitter, and it is mostly oil (not much water), then you might want to run just the hose if you want to use that oil on your chain.

I ride a 2018 Road King standard with the 107 M8. She has a stage 2 with a Fueling 465 cam, Bassani Road Rage exhaust and an Arlen Ness Big Sucker air intake. She’s a spitter! I suspected she was, so when I installed a DK external breather system half way through the summer, I installed it with 2 cans, hanging a can off of each cylinder out in the open just behind and below the air filter. They are out in the open easy to get at. I have to empty them every 600-800 miles. But I don’t mind because servicing the cans is a simple process. The crap that comes out of these is just amazing and I’m glad I’m not running it through the bike anymore. Why is she a spitter?......From an earlier video, I knew not to overfill the oil and I always run at or below the half way mark on the dipstick. I suspect the oil pump. She has an OEM pump that’s 1st or 2nd generation for the M8s. Harley is now on generation 4. To me, it’s just not worth it to put in a new pump because she’s never had a wet sumping issue where I’ve had a loss of power. In summary, I really like and recommend this product. Whether you buy the can or the filter depends on your installation. Mine’s right out in the open and the can looks good. If I did more of a hidden installation I probably consider the filter.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would suspect the oil pump is the source of all that oil carry-over also...it sounds like it is not doing a good job of scavenging. Really great to hear that the Catch-Cans are keeping it under control for you. We appreciate your business. 👍

Both, kind of... On my 98 Softail I run the breather bolt hoses to each end of a tee and from the middle leg I run that hose to another tee orientated so the side leg getting the hose from the breather nuts is horizontal. The inline ones on each end are now vertical, I run the bottom hose down to the bottom of the bike with a plug in it. The other end pointing up goes to a little filter. The bottom leg acts as a "catch can" and allows the air to go up and out the filter. My 91 FL is bottom breather EVO, that one I put a small actual catch can with a filter off that. She is getting older and the check valve in the pump will let about a tablespoon get by after a couple weeks. The can catches it all nice and neat, do not have that problem with the 98. The 74 ironhead is a whole different story...

Thanks for your time guys, I appreciate your help and your products. On my 06 Flhpi with a tc88 , how do you add an external breather with a big sucker air cleaner? The backing plate has two slots for the factory breather hoses that sit under the air filter, when relocating the breather hoses from the factory breather bolts to the y connector it leaves the two channels empty to let un filtered air in to the throttle body. Basically it looks like I need to use some type of filler to close them off or is there a different backing plate that doesn't have the gaps ? I appreciate any help you can give? I have a 06 RK flhpi TC88 w/ Delphi injection I have the basic A. N. Big sucker kit . Am using factory breather bolts with the nipple on them and 1/4 hose routed behind the plate and over the frame. Haven't finished the install yet and haven't heard back from A. N. About it. Probably because they don't think you need an external breather with they're A.C. setup?

Yes, the dipstick or trans cover vent is a popular internet phenomena right now. We've seen no testing to validate the vacuum theory. We are going to be doing some testing soon. Some of the older Twin Cam's do spit more than other bikes. You can check your oil level to make sure that you do not have too much oil in the bike, that can cause excessive spitting as well. The catch can does a much better job containing the oil if you have a bike that spits a lot, or you can do like you said and route it under frame. hey fellas i just ordered a breather system for my 2014 low rider. i decided on the filter instead of the catch can. my question is if the filter starts to fill up with oil, will the oil come out eventually through the filter? or just build up in the filter? i prefer it just come out instead of building up in there. thank you for the great products. i had ordered a catch can for more road glide and loved it by the way.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
How the oil builds up depends on a few things- 1. How much does your bike spit (every bike is different) 2. How long do you ride 3. How far away is the filter from the intake The further it is away from the intake the faster it will build up. The closer it is, and the longer rides you take will have enough hot air reaching the filter element that it will vaporize and not build up as quickly. Glad you are enjoying the parts, and we appreciate your business. 👍

We do have some Customers that have done that. Water is a non-issue, the chains are exposed to rain and puddles. It is a function of how much oil a particular bike expels thru the breather bolts and a function of the environment.

I have a 2014 Road King CVO after watching this video, I removed my Screaming Eagle air cleaner. It was full of oil. After looking closely at the engine breather bolts I'm not sure how it can be modified. The back plane has angled holes that lead to black spacer around my bolts to the heads. Can I replace my mounting hardware or drill a hole into them from the bottom and attach a hose, then tap and plug the back plane holes? Is there a kit for the CVO Screaming Eagle air cleaner?

I am a new 2021 HD Sportster owner, and do not want to replace the factory air cleaner at this time...but want to put this external breather on. Can it be done? Based on the look/feel of the factory air cleaner, it seems I'd have to drill a hole for the tee/hose to pass through, but am not 100% sure. Thoughts? Not sure which photo you are referring to. However, both on the Twin Cam and M8, a popular placement is below the air cleaner above the timing cover, like in the link below. It is attached to the hose, nothing else. At first we thought it might move and bump into the pushrod tubes, but it doesn't. Hose is pretty short and stiff enough to keep it in place. Here is my deal on my 21 street bob 114. I bought an aftermarket breather off of eBay. It is one that has the glass see through cover. There is no external breather. Instead the kit just caps it off completely. Is that bad? I did notice after only 10 miles of riding. The glass was covered in moisture. Water. Is it good to have the system blocked off like that?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 4 ай бұрын
The air cleaner may look like it is capped off at the breathers. It is Not. It is feeding that hot, oily, oxygen depleted air into the air cleaner, and part of that is what you are seeing on the see through cover. This is a very useful video on the subject to watch- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8x0mKmLx9Kxk58.html Just so you know, if it were blocked off you would have oil leaking out of various gaskets on the engine. For the longevity of your engine it will definitely last longer if you are externally venting to allow all that hot, oily, oxygen depleted air out of the bike, rather than trapping it in and causing more carbon build up. We have a variety of External Breather Systems that you can see at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/all-twin-cam-engines-c76-323.htm If you are not sure which one will fit your air cleaner, please feel free to email or call: Support@DKCustomProducts.com 662-252-8828 Thanks for commenting! 😎 MB

Hi DK, I have a 2019 Street Glide with the SE 128ci stage 4 kit installed. They installed the new HD oil pump and since then, the bike burns oil (can smell it from time to time) and the filter/intake has oil inside. Even the spark plugs are dirty. She runs hot 🔥 320 to 340°F. Had to refill oil twice now in less than 2000 miles. I have the Trask Checkmate installed. I will install the Feuling oil pump and cam plate as soon as Michigan warms up a little, if the runout is good. Do you think, that a EBS will help with my issue? Or do you have an idea 💡 what could cause such an issue? Thank you in advance!!!

There are two things that I would look at. 1. They may have made a mistake in the installation of the Stage IV kit...we seen that happen. Have them do a Leak-Down test as a first step to tracking down the problem. 2. Whether it passes or fails the leak down test (should be at least 95% or higher), it is running far too hot for its' own good. Check out this video series (if you don't watch them all, for sure watch #3 in the series) kzfaq.info/sun/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C Yes, an External Breather System will help the bike run stronger and last longer, but it is not the entire solution to the heat or the burning oil.

@DKCustomProducts got a call today from the dealer and they weren’t able to produce any leak down on the motor. They stated, that they were able to get pressure by rotating the motor in the push rods. They asked which oil I am running and blamed the Amsoil 20-50 syn. I changed now over to redline 20-50 syn. Let’s see how that will work. They want me to monitor the oil every 1k miles, if it’s less than a quart it’s good by HD. I will proceed with my Feuling cam, cam plate and oil pump change, to see what happens. Other mods in the pipeline: Jim‘s force flow fan, tank lift deluxe, A1 oil pressure gauge, tab performance headers, dynojet target tune, S&S roller rocker arms and maybe the Ultracool oil cooler with fans. I already have the dkcustom deflector wings at the front and a Jesse oil temp gauge. I am still trying to figure out if I should go with a catch can, but it has to be reversible because of the German TÜV inspection guys.

Great questions, thanks for asking. 1. If the can fills up (rare) then oil will start seeping out the vent holes on the top. It will continue functioning as it should. 2. Most folks do notice an increase in power. (but not everyone...I believe it depends on how you ride and how well you know your bike) It is measurable, you can see the dyno chart linked below. Here are a couple of comments from Customers. "Ordered the breather system for my wife's Twin Cam Freewheeler and my Heritage Classic 114 Milwaukee 8. Another brand had a recall. The crank vent hose had a low spot. Repeated short trips in cold weather could build up condensation. In freezing weather ice could block the crankcase vent, resulting in blown seal that could dump oil onto the rear tire. Recall routed the hose on a continual downhill, so water couldn’t fill in a low spot. I used to commute on a Road King in the winter, as long as the roads were dry. I’d try to do a longer trip every week or two to let the engine get fully warm, but when I had occasion to take the breather system apart I was shocked at how much water there was…

@DKCustomProducts

Yes, all engine produce crankcase pressure, which results in hot, oily, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers. This results in less power, and carbon buildup in the throttle body sensors and pistons. The newer oil pump was to fix the sumping issue, but it does not eliminate blow-by which is the power robber. Every bike has different levels of oil contained in the blow-by, and an oil pump can have some effect of making more or less oil being suspended in the blow-by. Should I vent my dipstick as well as at the air cleaner? Or do I just need to vent at one location?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. Venting the dipstick only stops some of the hot oily oxygen depleted air from going into your combustion chambers...Not all of it. The External Breather System stops ALL that crap from going in. A vented dipstick is trying to relieve the same crankcase pressure as the EBS, so no need to do both. There is one exception...if you have a weak oil pump that is not scavenging well, or have a very high compression ratio resulting in excessive CCP, then doing both can reduce the possibility of sumping.

Vented dipsticks and transmission cover vents do NOT take the place of external breather systems. There is still hot, oily, oxygen depleted air being fed into the intake. The folks that sell vented dipsticks and trans cover vents, have it right in their product description that they do not prevent all that crap from going into your intake. Here is a copy and paste from the Trask website- "This will reduce the oil exiting from the head breathers..." Even if there is no trace of oil in the intake, there is still hot, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers, making the engine run hotter, and not as strong because of the lower oxygen content. IF you have an older M8, with the older oil pump and you are concerned about sumping...OR, IF you have a built engine with higher compression, then it may be beneficial to do an EBS And a vented dipstick or trans cover vent.

Your Crankcase ventilation system only produces positive pressure. Additionally there are breather valves in the heads just beyond the breather bolts. @DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Your question presumes that a greater vacuum is needed than naturally occurs in the crankcase. I have seen the recent popular thoughts on this subject, however, not a single person or company has provided any test results, or data at all that there is any validity to their theory. What is known, and what there is a plethora of testing and data on, DO NOT put hot, oily, oxygen depleted air into your intake. It will reduce power, cause accelerated wear, and result in tune instability. These things are all well documented. @DKCustomProducts

@@Heavy69Metal What you may have seen is a vent on the top of the transmission. These vents, and the oil tank vents are changing the crankcase pressure. They were initially designed as a bandaid for sumping problems on the M8. If there is a sumping problem, it should be addressed at it's root cause. If there is not time or money to do that, then folks have used those vents to bandaid the problem until it can be fixed. The Harley Heavy Breather, unless modded with an EBS is like any other mediocre aftermarket air cleaner. The 636v, with the patent pending design, outperforms (and out cools) the HB, for those that like that style of A/C. @@Heavy69Metal Oil pump is not scavenging all of the oil out of the bottom of the crank. Not saying there are not some inherent designs in the M8 that make it more likely to sump. BUT, you hear of VERY few 19+ bikes sumping...HD finally hit on an oil pump that scavenges better. Yes, sumping will result in the engine being hotter...but that is the least of the symptoms. Vented transmission cover to relieve pressure and lessen the amount that will make it to the intake in the first place…. Seems like we all should be doing both
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
Why? Vented Trans still send hot, oily, oxygen depleted air to the intake, so an External Breather System is needed. If you have an EBS there is 100% of pressure relieved, there is no hot, oily, oxygen depleted air going into the intake, so where is the need for a vented transmission? btw, the only reason for the dipstick vent or trans vent was because of the bad oil pumps the first few years of the M8. That has been resolved...and if one has an early model M8, it is highly recommended to get the latest oil pump, which alleviates the extra pressure in the crank. The only time that it makes sense to run a vented dipstick or trans vent, in addition to an EBS, is if one has a highly built M8 with a very aggressive cam, and/or really high compression...reason is that more than the normal amount of pressure will push past the rings into the crank, building excessive pressure. That said, I know a few guys with built 131's, running an EBS, and running them cool, and they have had zero issues.

They work well on 99% of Sportsters, about 50% of Twin Cams, and about 80% of M8's. The filter in them is really small, so on a bike that is a spitter (has a lot of oil carry-over) they can overwhelm those small filters and get oil along the side of the bike. In the automotive world (I'm a mechanic, but also a biker) we call it the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system (PCV for short) and generally on cars and trucks, any oil vapor coming thru the PCV is extremely minimal. It maybe amounts to a teaspoon every 10,000 miles. That said, I've personally installed a catch can on my Dodge Challenger. I digress. The PCV system that dumps back into the intake is required by law, as per the shitty EPA, to be a part of all vehicles produced now. Something worth noting is that crankcase ventilation is a vital part of ALL 4 stroke engines, but in the past, it used to vent to atmosphere instead of back into your intake. I've personally never known the issue too be as significant as it is on Harleys. To me, there's clearly a design flaw somewhere. There should not be that much oil coming out of the breather as it does on Harleys, M8's in particular and Twin Cams to a lesser extent.

I'm also a mechanic (jet fighters, Bronco turboprops, cars, trucks, bikes and anything else that holds still long enough to workon) since the 1970s and have seen MANY automotive intake manifold PCV passages CLOGGED by baked on oil. HD crankcase pressures due to the common crankpin tend to be high but those problems were solved before WWII with road draft tubes on nearly every piston engine until the PCV valve era in the 1960s. A catch can and NO PCV connections to the intake is the wise move for cars for owners who don't just run a road draft tube or don't want to sort out vaccuum hoses which can be more hassle than just interposing a catch can.

Which is better a breather system or a vented dip stick other than price?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
Well, as you alluded to, the vented dipstick in MUCH more expensive...but what really is ironic is that vented dip stick does not eliminate the Hot, OIly, Oxygen depleted air from going into the combustion chambers, which is a power robber and a longevity issue. Yes, it does reduce it some, but since it does not eliminate it...it is really only something to look at if you have a sumping issue. And if I had a sumping issue I would resolve it at it's source, not put a bandaid on it. The other reason is if one has a built engine, that for some reason is building excessive Crankcase pressure, that would be a reason to have both a dip stick vent and an EBS.

When I checked/drained the can after a few hundred miles, there was a good amount of what looked like water, not oil, in the can. I collected it in a container, luckily. But I think this is from heated air that cooled and condensed. Anybody's thoughts?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Condensation is found in the catch can when the weather is cool/cold and/or when there have been a lot of short runs...where the engine did not get to full operating temperature and stay there for a while. This is because water is a by-product of combustion AND because of the heating and cooling cycles which result in condensation. When an engine is fully warmed up and runs for 15 minutes or more at full temp, all the water is expelled as steam....otherwise, it collects in the catch-can.

If you do not have a real spitter (the oil is not overwhelming your smaller catch-can) then you do not need the newer one. The newer one is larger, so it can hold more between needing to empty it. The newer one is a 4 Stage filtration inside the can. The improved filtration does a MUCH BETTER job at keeping all the oil in the can...this is really important for bikes that have a lot of oil carry-over. You can see in the photo below that the filtration is made up of 8 individual components, designed to let the air out and keep the oil in. Only if they see it. Per the Federal Law of the Consumer protection act it does not, BUT Harley and the EPA entered into an illegal agreement so that on 2017+ Harley's, any change to the engine voids the powertrain warranty. Rather than fight their illegal collusion, if you ever need to take the bike in for warranty work, it is easy to remove the EBS and put it back to stock. Takes about 15 minutes.
