So, a tip i learned years ago about if you need to clay bar. If you take a plastic bag or cellophane wrapper and put that on your hand then run it along the surface of the car, you will feel the imperfections much easier than just using your bare hand.

Thank you for this! I got everything you mentioned here, started this today - the small thin panel above my driver side door - before the roof. A BIG improvement already! The roof and trunk will take more time, and more passes, I'll tackle that tomorrow.

Your sharing of knowledge brings backs memories of what my father had shown me quite a few decades ago. (I'm 64 yrs. old) There have been improvements in paint products (i.e. clear coat, etc.) that you've expanded upon. Great job! You're an inspiration to bring out the d.i.y. in almost any car guy.

letlive - I'm not convinced that clear coat can be considered an improvement, unless you're the sort of person who can afford to buy new cars and replace them every few years. Decades ago, it was just duco and that stuff seemed to last.

In my experience clear coat is not an improvement. It is too thin. Even worse the paint basecoat is even thinner.

Guy 1. tells about inflicting scratches to the paint right after he rubbed thoroughly the dirt laying on the paint surface right into the paint. 2. would wet sand rock chips and scratches so deep, that they definitely reach down into the primer or even to the bare metal, so they can not be actually corrected without putting paint on the surface first 3. would use the scratch remover after compounding and polishing, when in fact the coarseness of scratch removers is between the compounds and polishes, and because of that using a scratch remover (besides being totally pointless at this point) would just ruin the previously achieved polish. Very professional. A lot to learn from this guy.

I have a Ford F-150 pickup which I would love to do some work on since the truck is not looking like it did when I purchased it over 5 years ago. The body is in great shape, but the paint is dull now. After viewing your video I know now what I can do to clear up the finish and get it looking like it did when I first got it. The previous owner was a truck driver and didn't spend much time driving it, leaving it looking like new. The color is black, and I will clean the outside so it looks like it did when leaving the factory. Thanks for showing us this video, and I hope you are having a nice weekend.

Hello Iman, I've been following your channel for while and have found them extremely helpful and often entertaining. I really appreciate your insight and honesty of what can sometimes be a daunting responsibility of car maintenance. I try what I can to upkeep my vehicle, often times with the aide of your videos. They certainly have saved me time and money from taking it to shop. But there are task and maintenance work that I just don't have the tools to complete. Would you be able to do work on subscriber's vehicles? I'm in SD and probably not too far from you. Thank you for your diligent work, it's well done.

Remember the taped lines and masking tape is for the video demos to show before and after results. In real world applications just do sections at a time. I do sections of the vehicle. If I get called away and can’t finished in a day I am good. I recommend the zonal technique as in rear center and front. Typical four door sedan for example. I will start with trunk/rear bumper/ quarter panel area. Wash, clay, rinse, corrective action for scratches swirls etc..... my basic theory is if I run out of time I would rather have let’s say 1/3rd of the vehicle fully done than then 3/3 of the vehicle halfway done. Remember once you clay you lose all the wax and sealant protection so important to get the buffing compounds swirl remover, polish, glaze wax and sealants applied quickly. Work quick but safe and correctly.
