Soo I've been stupidly taking my new black Durango to the new auto carwash up the street cause it's convenient. but now all I see is swirls galore and whatever wax coating (lava shield is what they call it) is visible on the glass so im sure it's thick across the whole vehicle... Any words of wisdom to remove this crap so I can compound and polish the swirls out? Planning on ceramic coating it when I get it all cut and clean... Awesome vid btw it's giving me alot of confidence in a harbor freight DA and my ability... TIA for any advice!

Hey brother super happy to see you trying to take care of your Durango! I would do a full decon wash with a strip wash like purple power vehicle & boat wash. After that complete claying the vehicle and follow up with an IPA wipe down with the dilution provided in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8qdmcdhmse8Y5c.html after that you'll be pretty much set to go to polish! If you have any more questions just ask!

1. wash - washes off surface dirt 2. clay - gets off embedded dirt in paint 3. compound - gets out big scratches and very dull paint (can be skipped if car has smaller scratches and newer paint) 4. polish - makes the car shine 5. wax - protects the car paint

MERKULES 187 between 4 and 5 when the scratches come off the car. The wax is a sealant too, it just doesn’t last as long as ceramic so you’re basically trading one for another

Been creating my own anxieties over cutting and buffing my Corvette. I come from all hand-everything as I am older but, being 45, I am not too old to want to make things easier. I have used this exact setup on an old Miata and it was flawless. I assumed that my Corvette needed something magical and was about to pull the trigger on Rupes gear, or even Griott's setups. It isn't about the money but I kept remembering the Harbor Freight DA and looked it up on YT. When I found this video I knew that was my path. You relieved my woes as I know that my Corvette isn't "that special" to where a DIY'er needs a Rupes setup. Yes I love my car but I am not about that life. I want to get the 19 year old paint bright and swirl free and this will be the path. Thanks for making me remember I can do anything without spending the $$$ on top tier stuff.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you explaining the basic without overdoing it. Especially for a beginner like me it’s important to keep it simple but essential. So many people explain but are getting too expert minded or too simple with a lot of questions left. In addition, you take the time to answer questions and provide further insight if needed. Thank you so much for your time and efforts! Now, I am going to tackle my 20 year old S500....not that have to but I am looking forward to the process. Should be quite an experience with a deep burgundy almost black metallic paint which I thought looks decent but have been shown that it can be improved significantly. Keep up the excellent work. I’ll be watching !

I'm not a fan of carnauba for durability. As soon as the car's surface temperature hits 185 (or so), it quickly starts to degrade and melt off. But at lower temps, it certainly does shine, literally.

Awesome video and introduction to a quality finish and sustaining it. I would just like to add that after all that hard work 1 or 2 cycles through an automatic car wash will completely destroy it and you will once again be covered with swirl marks. Also, my car has full PPF on the front end and full ceramic coating. One time getting rained on and then sitting outside at the airport for a couple days in SLC, UT my entire car is covered in hard water spots that won't come off. Wash and clay bar had no effect, I now need to redo the paint correction on the entire car, I feel the ceramic coating was an entire waste of money.

I am a newbie and trying very hard to fix my peeling clear coat on my 2005 Honda....I need Help, I sanded the clear coat and actually peeled it off on my roof....then I used Dupli spray paint to make but stupidly I removed the white sprayer thinking it was a plug so the paint was not real smooth...I did sand a bit (didn’t know it should have been wet sanding) anyway I then sprayed their clear coat (3 coats) it is kinda rough and orange peel. I now did wet sanding and ,definitely smoother...my question, should I spray more clear coat or use my DA that I just bought and compound it and then wax it .or what? Btw, I bought Meguires 105 and 205....thanks for any help..

Thanks for the info. I have an orbital sander/polisher . I bought the pads at Amazon and it explains the colors of the brand. I will have to do this and I have very little experience doing it. I have done it by hand on my truck.

I've been wanting to try this for 2 years now. I kept having to prioritize other things, but I just found a good sale on the harbor freight polisher, and I'm preparing for a big wave of car work. Several fluids need changing, brakes/rotors need done, and she hasn't been washed in a hot minute, so it's time to look into this again. I've only used a paste wax in the past for simplicity, but I want to try ceramic eventually. Until I can do a true correction, though, i need something that is more durable and eaiser to apply than paste, so I will try a sealant this time. Ive never done any paint correction, only up to clay, so I might do full clean, then learn how to a polish, and finish with a sealant for now. Then i may try a more serious correction in a few months (Paint touch ups, rusty chip treatment, then compound). I'm not gonna rush to ceramic until I'm sure I'm satisfied. I'm not even quite sure if it's the right choice for me either. I might just have to stick to sealants so I can slowly work on the paint instead of trying to perfect everything and 6 Thank you for all the good tips. It's a little intimidating but you've helped make it approachable.

I just watched about 6 videos on this and this is by far the best as far as explanation of the entire process. Just one question, wouldn't it be better to use the IPA to remove wax before the clay bar?
@48Detailing
@48Detailing 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian I'm really glad you enjoyed the video to answer your question in order to room wax you're going to need to use a paint prep solution or an IPA solution! A clay bar will only remove embedded contamination from the surface of the vehicle, really hope that helps!

Great video. This should help people get over their fear of polishing paint. If I may add some additional info. I take an additional step when prepping and that would be using an iron removal spray before I clay bar. This step removes any metallic particles such as brake dust, rail dust and industrial fallout that may be embedded in the paint. To me this is a necessary step that should not be skipped. Especially on light colored vehicles. Also each pass should overlap the last pass by 50% and be in a hashtag or horizontal and vertical pattern. Do not get sloppy on this part. Keep your pad flat on the surface. One series of horizontal and vertical passes is called a pass or a set. One to four passes per section may be necessary to achieve the desired results. The pads and compounds used has a direct effect on this. Don’t start with a heavy cut pad and compound. Do a test pass first then check your work. Some clear coats are softer than others and you don’t want to remove anymore than necessary. Make adjustments to pads and compounds as needed. Have fun and keep it shiny.

Ditto on J. Osborn comment. I've been youTubing videos on what polisher to buy since I'm going to detail my 03 Tacoma for the 1st time. Some other videos don't speak to well about Harbor Freight D/A polisher. I have two vehicles to work on but I'll use my truck as a Guinee pig before I do my wife's 2012 CRV. Thank you for the thorough demonstration and for making it clear to use regular alcohol mixed with water and not Jameson on the rocks.......

Excellent video !! First time for me using a DA polisher today, I tried the Meguires Ultimate Compound and not real impressed. I called Meguires and they suggested I use the 105/205 steps and finish with Hybrid Ceramic liquid. After seeing this video I'm going to do the clay bar and the rest like you did. Your video is the best one I've found for a novice, simple, to the point and NO #\*#=&&"'*\== UNNECESSARY loud music, NO long introduction, NO b.s. or getting off on tangents about a million other things that just confuse the issue for a beginner. Thank you thank you thank you...my search is over ! ❗🎉🎊👍😎

@@Twolves2005 It didn't take out light scratches in the clear coat, I experimented with different pads, and speeds, numerous passes, different amounts of the compound. The Meguires paste wax is the only product that seemed to work well, and the Meguires Detail wax. Kind of dissatisfied because usually Meguires products give great results. Next time I use the da I'm trying 3M products.

I tried using a DA polisher and its slower than the second coming of christ, the Rotary at Harbor Freight (advertised for 29 bucks) works very well for the money. I did buy a 5-inch backing plate and use 6-inch premium pads from China. It would be helpful for you to identify the one-step polish and where you get your buff pads because there are so many options and every product is different. SPTA pads range from very soft to firm and the quality of foam can vary between styles. I like the Diamond pattern from SPTA and ZFE - T-60 & T-40 for general polishing but these are hard to find since it was removed from Amazon a long time ago (foam material is made in Germany).. Just pointing this out because any beginner is overwhelmed with the many choices and deceptive descriptions used in marketing detailing products.

@48Detailing
@48Detailing 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Pilotdiana! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Sadly these products(m105 & m205) are specifically tailored towards car automotive clear coat, which is very different from RV fiberglass and gel coat. I do recommend a product such as: Meguiars RV heavy oxidation remover (for really bad oxidation) www.amazon.com/Meguiars-M4916-Marine-Oxidation-Remover/dp/B0000AY4YX this product is specifically made for fiberglass and gel coated surfaces that you would find on your RV. And if the oxidation is not to bad on your RV you can also use Gel Gloss RV polish and Protector: www.amazon.com/Gel-Gloss-RV-GG-64-Polish-Protector/dp/B004OZLNE4?crid=L9A7T1QP9FMS&keywords=rv+one+step&qid=1529341995&sprefix=rv+one+s&sr=8-17&ref=mp_s_a_1_17 this product is a one step just like the product(pink bottle) I mentioned in the video but again its specifically made for RVs. Please if you have any further questions feel free to ask and remember to like and subscribe!
