How to FIX Slow Download Speeds on Xbox Series X / S

After seeing a lot of questions from my previous video on slow download speeds with Xbox: • Fix Your Slow Download... I've provided a more in-depth video on the fix and shown how the DNS fix works. I used the google DNS servers in this example but many DNS options out there may work better for you.
REMEMBER TO CLOSE ANY GAMES in the background because if games are open they will slow your speed too.
This technique will still work on the Series S / X as the software should be the same. I will have to check when I get one :)

You are THE man. DNS updated, immediately went from an average of about 700-800Kbps on the low side to a max of about 5-10Mbps, maybe 20-30Mbps if I'm lucky, to now an average of 50-60Mbps on the low side, all the way up to 200+Mbps on the high side. I work in IT, and honestly a little embarrassed to say that I'd never even given this a thought. Like I knew as soon as you started talking about DNS, I was like "This is it, that's the problem." You are a legend. Thank you!

If the Google DNS doesn't work as shown try these: Cloudfare ►► Primary DNS : 1.1.1.1 and the Secondary DNS : 1.0.0.1 Open DNS ►► Primary DNS : 208.67. 222.222 and the Secondary DNS : 208.67. 220.220

I only had too turn off the settings, so, I think you just have too turn the settings off for like 5 minutes and then back on. Right now i'm downloading at 200mbps, I was at like 15. Thank you. If it doesnt work by turning the settings off, I advise following his instructions

My one keeps starting at 18-40kbps for no reason than starts going up after an hour to 3 mbps then after 5 mins goes back down to 18kbps

Not necessarily. I did it the other day and as soon as went back to my update screen it changed to mbps. I added those additional steps if it didn’t work first time. 👍

I’m only getting about 14 mbps max trying to install Cold War on series x. I tried this and it hasn’t helped the speed. Is this my internet being slow or is there a fix I can do? I’ve been downloading Cold War for about 14 hours now and I’m still only at 70%.

What speed are you expecting? Try rebooting router too after turning off those settings and Xbox. Also try a wired connection? And make sure bay background games are closed. If you have a game open downloads will slow.

I know its a crazy bug. Have you tried doing a hard reset too? Hold the power button down for 10 seconds.

Hey Kathryn, yes you can try different dns check the description. But feel free to revert the dns to default. Did disabling the first two settings work?

try some other dns settings, it may only reduce ping. but the main thing that worked for me is turned off the automatic updates

np, just keep trying sometimes it can work. Check your speed on your phone or pc and compare. that way you know what it can achieve. :) use www.speedtest.net

Mine will go from 150mbs all the way down to 2mbs and just jump all around the entire time it downloads averages around 15mbs I have the 1gb package from cox. If I test the speed on my Xbox it says 300mb download speed.

Good gracious!! I've been trying to battle my slow speeds for months, reading countless forums and stuff. Until now! I'm so glad I found your video. Basically I got Gigabyte internet and all my devices average 800-900 download speeds except my Xbox one, what's funny is that my brother also has an Xbox one, his is connected to wifi, while mine is on ethernet. His was getting 150 mbps and mine was getting 15mbps. Now mine gets 270 mbps! I can not thank you enough for this! I was about to buy a new router and modem setup

@@alphagamer2394 follow all the steps in the video. You don’t need to do the dns change. But try as a last resort. have you plugged directly into the router? Close all games that are open & remove external hard drive. Does it happen to all downloads or one game in particular?

Don’t know if it’ll work or not but I jump from 300Mbps during the day down to 20Mbps even as low as getting into Kbps sometimes/ mostly at night when I try to play, it’s worth a shot I guess

@@pashtech I unplugged the router and restarted the Xbox to try and fix the issue. The router is a wired connection to the Xbox and the only smart devices I have are an Apple home and three LED color lights, I assume it’s probably the Xbox itself. Maybe when I eventually buy the new one it’ll be better

Have you closed down all open games? To get fastest speeds you can play any games whilst downloading. Also someone has said removing external hard drives help.

Try using a wired connection if nothing helped. And make sure any games are closed. FYI this happens on the Series X too.

@@pashtech have tried everything in your video with no beneficial results. And yes I have my system connected via wire. Tried wireless and got the same exact speeds. Resetting router, resetting the console, entering the DNS and nothing changes. Been trying since 3:30pm yesterday and I am not even at 20%. Highest mbs I saw was 30ish but generally stays around 20

Try 1.1.1.1 cloudflare. Tbh google dns and cloudflare will be worldwide.

no. You can use the link in in the description to find the best DNS server for you. A google DNS is worldwide and will use the nearest and best google dns servers based on your location.

when i go to test my speed it says it’s downloading at 40 mbs but when i update a game it only updates at 20kbs and i’ve followed all the steps and nothing running in the background but it’s still at 20kbs please help

What game is it? Have you tried clearing space or removing any external drives? maybe even try a wired cable?

@@pashtech nah i don’t need wired cables because 70 percent of the time my update speed has no problems but one time rainbow six siege took over 6 days to update and i’ve also got over 100 spare gbs of storage left

what's your max internet speed? try using speed net to compare.

I see everyone recommend this. If too many people do this won't it be counter productive because the traffic will slow down Google servers.

not all traffic routes through it just resolves quicker. You can try other shown below like cloudflare etc.

if you use google dns or cloudflare etc. It will balance the connections around the world. So it will put you onto the closest server to your location.

Let’s hope this works, I’m 13yo and idek what to believe when it comes to looking up stuff and I just set up my Xbox series s today and started the download for forza horizon 5, it’s really slow and very irritating since my family has been taking up part of the wifi and I really wanna play it so if this works then thanks otherwise I doubt myself.

Could it be Wi-Fi? Try plugging it direct into console just to test. If it’s still same you know it’s not the Wi-Fi

I went from 7mbps to 18mbps with this method, still painfully slow. I ended up connecting an ethernet cable to it and I'm back to a normal speed for my router. I'm not sure why the console runs so slow none of my other devices have this problem. Still this was a helpful vid and appreciate it.

something majorly wrong with xbox software. maybe do a hard reset... or even reset the whole thing. are other devices working ok?

@@pashtech Yea all my other devices are working normally it’s just recently my Xbox all of the sudden has been running games slow and downloads slow. I’ve never had this issue before. But I’ll try to reset the whole thing thank you.
