My hair is so stringy/web frizzed. Throughout my last 5 years, my hair has thinned out significantly and between the stringiness and the thinning, I hate my curls right now. I think I also have a problem in that I don’t want shrinkage in my curls, I want my hair to still have length. Can you do a video about how to style without encouraging shrinkage?

For tighter textures, I recommend the African Pride pre-shampoo for detangling before washing. It’s a very slippy gel-custard consistency. It works so much better for me than oil.

I'm new to curly hair creams, gels and products, and your description of the product feeling "slippy" in the hair while applying product and adding some water has given me the best results! I have thick hair and it's common for the top layer to dry much faster than the rest, and spraying some more water on it has helped distribute gels and creams much more evenly!

Thanks Gena!!!! As always a great video with the better tips for getting rid of wet frizz. I experimented webbed frizz and it was hard to deal with it. I remember I got nervous and impatient and I broke a lot of my hair. It was because I used a shampoo that was in a bad conditions, I through it away and never use it again. Since I apply your recommendations I get better results with my curly hair. 😊

Wow, Gena, I learn something from you every time. I never even thought about webbed frizz or gave that name to it. There really is a balance, as you say, between having some frizz and having volume. I did start detangling with oil and/or with a conditioner I'm trying to use up before shampooing, after you (and others) mentioned it a while back, and it helps a lot. Thanks for all the great information!

Hi Gena pre shampoo conditioner detangling is how I use up conditioner or masks that are ok but not favourites. As long as they are fairly slippery they work well, even if they’re not as deeply moisturising as I want in my actual conditioner/mask post shampoo. This allows me to use up product that might just get shoved to the back or given away. Just using oil doesn’t work as well for my very course textured hair as it soaks up oil easily and then I need a lot making it more difficult to shampoo. Frizz is a fact of life for me, but pre shampoo detangling was a revelation when I started doing so a couple of years ago. Best wishes x

Great video , Gena! thanks 😊 I noticed the terry cloth-looking bands on your forearms while shampooing. Are the specifically for that purpose? or are they just hair scrunchies to catch the drips? I’d love to have a link if you have one? Thanks for all the time and effort you put into helping us wavy/curly girls out ❤

Don't despair, even if I understand you! I've been trying to keep my hair curly for a year now and I've only recently started to see improvements and notice that I have much less frizz... When curly influencers say you need patience, it's not a joke. 😢 If it can helps, here are a few things that I learn on Gina's channel and have really helped me: - try several gels before styling hair and try several quantities (still in the testing phase for my concern) - hairspray before drying - blow-drying with a diffuser (huge improvement in frizz, my hair can't stand air-drying as my routine stands) - drying hair with a drying bonnet (very practical and even less frizz than with the diffuser) Sorry for my weird English, I'm not an English speaker ❤️

Thanks for the great tips! What speed and heat level do you use to diffuse?
@GenaMarie

I use the low speed, medium heat on the ends and high heat on the roots. That’s with the Curlsmith diffuser though that doesn’t get too hot. I don’t recommend high on other diffusers

I just wanted to ask a question about this topic. I comb my hair before washing my hair. I wash my hair with shampoo 2 times, I put on a mask that detangles my hair very nicely. When I wash the mask off my hair, my hair is terribly tangled again, as if I had done nothing. 😕 It's also kind of "heavy" as if it hasn't been washed well, and it is. I wash my hair very thoroughly and I don't use a lot of washing or styling products. And what I use doesn't contain silicones that would stay on the hair during washing. When I do the final rinse, it's like I'm back at the beginning. The only thing that comes to mind is that it is because of the hard water. Is that possible? is this happening to anyone else?
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 8 ай бұрын
Yes, either hard water or you shampoo isn’t cleansing enough
@themikeroberts
@themikeroberts 7 ай бұрын
You could try either a hard water shampoo and conditioner or a very effective ("clarifying") shampoo (Gena likes the Pantene Volume & Body Shampoo, which I also like) and see if either one fixes it. My normal shampoo (Herbal Essence Argan and Aloe) will foam a lot even if there's a lot of product buildup (but I do use silicones) so for me, the foam is not indicative of how clean the hair is. Instead this wet frizzy webbing is my indication that I need to use a more effective shampoo.

Hi Gena, I have a question. If a shampoo has mild surfactants but one chelating ingredient (tetrasodium EDTA), is it still mild? I'm specifically referring to the As I Am Dry and Itchy shampoo, I usually shampoo my hair twice a week (which is also what As I Am recommends) but I don't want to dry out my hair any more than I have already. If it's too harsh then I'll buy the cowash so I can alternate. Thank you :) Here's the list of ingredients for the shampoo : Zinc Pyrithione 1.0%Aqua/Water/Eau, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Betaine, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamide Mipa, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract, Origanum Vulgare Leaf Extract, Glycol Stearate, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Piroctone Olamine, Polyquaternium-10, Quaternium-80, Propanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Menthol, Caprylic Acid, Sodium Chloride, Ceteareth-60 Myristyl Glycol, Tetrasodium Edta, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 8 ай бұрын
It's at the end of the ingredients list so at a lot concentration, so this means it's likely just in there as a stabilizer and not to actually chelate. Even if it was listed at the top along with the other surfactants, it doesnt mean that its drying because there are other moisturizing ingredients and mild surfactants in the formulation.

I have a question. My 10 year old has beautiful long tight curls. She is part Spanish and part italian. Her hair is very dry and prone to frizz but the thing that has always been an issue and because of this she can never wear her out and has to keep it braided or in a bun is that her hair instantly tangles and mattes up right after brushing. I have tried everything from different ways of washing, styling, and products. I have tried it all and yet her hair still gets so tangled and matted. She cries all the time that she can’t leave her hair down and I don’t why this happens or how to fix it.

Finally trying to get it to look good down but half of my head is really frizzy and none of these tips help. my self confidence and honestly general mental health has never been lower bc of this :( these tips did not help me but if u know of anything else that may help let me know 🥲

I said that I don’t recommend ONLY co-washing. I like the Curlsmith cowash but only for certain purposes such as in between regular shampoos if you need to rewash. I’ve always said that shampooing with a more cleansing, lathering shampoo is critical.

please help me i'm seriously so desperate this is causing me severe stress. Everyone EVERYONE says the solution to this wet frizz is adding more water, i follow the tips to A TEE. It makes NO difference on my hair. Half of my hair is manageable amounts of frizzy. Ugly, but soft enough. The other side is a different store. FRIZZ CITY less than 5 minutes after getting out of the shower or soaking my hair. No styling creams, mousses, gels, deep conditioners etc does anything AT ALL to this frizz. I've tried curly girl method and regular basics and nothing helps. I'm so desperate I don't know what to do. I feel like i'm at my wits end genuinely going insane over how to fix this. Wasn't always like this either but it did not get like this from damage or heat bc i don't dye or style with heat at all.
