Manual transmissions are just a box with a bunch of gears in it. The box has gear lube in it, the big gears lower in the box have what's called slingers on them they pick up the lube and throw it all over the gears. There's no pump needed, if the gears are moving and the lube is at the proper level no damage will occur.

I understand why you'd put it in gear because in neutral the mainshaft would continue to rotate freely without any splash lubrication from any of the gears splined with the mainshaft, but can't you still flat tow a manual 2wd(rwd) just by removing the driveshaft and pluging the transmission?

Hey Tyler, I noticed you were using wire to hold up your safety chains. I started years ago cutting old car or motorcycle tubes into large rubber bands and use them to hold up my chains. I like this because it allows the chains to move around a little but keep them out of harms way.

Shouldn't matter what gear. Looks like he put it in first in the video. You just want the engine and trans to be locked together so the trans doesn't spin without lubrication

I’ve read a lot of confusion about auto towing and whether to place the transmission into Park or Drive? Jeep community, what’s the correct answer or the difference?

Can you explain the logic of putting the transmission (manual) in gear? With the transfer case in neutral, none of the wheel's rotation should be making it to the transmission. Seems to me that transfer case in neutral with the trans in neutral as a fail-safe makes more sense. No?

The steps he explains in the video are EXACTLY what the Jeep owners manual instructs Jeep owners to do when flat towing behind a tow vehicle. He briefly explained the reasons why, basically to avoid causing damage.and to keep your transmission gears from rotating during a tow. FUN FACT - these instructions apply to ALL Jeeps models from 1987 to present. Jeep equipts every model for flat towing by incorporating the exta steering wheel unlock position on thr keyed ignition switch.

Russell Bynum wheels will run free but the transmission still. Transmission will not get load from tc. So the gear will not break.

My 2016 Wrangler JK has three ignition conditions. Lock, electrics on and start engine.....My power steering only is engaged when engine in on. Towing tomorrow for first time.... will the jeep tow behind the rv properlywithout the the power steering actuated? TIA for a reply...JR

Hey Tyler, I've flat towed my xj for years and never had a problem. I recently upgraded my tie rod and drag link. Now when I tow it the wheels won't fully straighten out, they slight pull to the passenger side. Any ideas why?

What braking system did you use. Most if not all states require a braking system in the towed vehicle over 4,000 pounds.

A Jeep YJ or TJ is not over 4000lbs, so does not require a braking system.

I hate tow bars I'll never use one again I had mine installed correctly and I used to tow my jeep Cherokee crawler with my daily jeep Cherokee and one day the tow bar just snapped and rear ended me im so thankful i didn't kill anyone and both jeeps were fine I just slapped a "beat not a babied" bandaid decal over the dent

If you don't mind a little work drop your drive shafts and use heavy duty zip ties to hold it out of the way

That's what I do disconnect from front & rear differential tie up or simply remove completely just make a mark to realign.

Your safety chains are not hooked up correctly. If you cross the chains it creates a cradle for the tongue of your tow bar to rest upon. The way you have it, the tongue will dive downward and hit the pavement.

Pwagner014- NOT TRUE ALWAYS cross your chains, we just had the hitch slide out after a hitch pin failure. The hitch never hit the ground till I got the jeep stopped on the side of the road. It's even law in some states.

That is correct, the chains should always be crossed, these ones are obviously too long too if he has to hold them up with whatever rig that is.

I have a 05 GMC Sierra with a 5.3 and tow package will that be capable of flat towing my 97 tj?

look in the door frame on the GMC to see if it has a trailering sticker then see if the towed item fits in the towed weight and also if any weight is on the hitch it counts with the cargo weight.

Im going to tow my xj and in the past I just pull the driveshafts off the diffs. No worries that way.

No. You do not want the transmission turning. Just the transfer case.

+Tyler Bleepinjeep No quotes from state law, but I found this same statement on several websites: "The safety chain or cable shall be attached to the trailer drawbar so as to prevent it from dropping to the ground, and to assure the towed vehicle follows in the course of the towing vehicle in the case the vehicles become separated." "Every towed vehicle shall be coupled by means of a safety chain, cable, or equivalent device, in addition to the regular trailer hitch or coupling. The safety chain or cable shall be securely connected with the chassis of the towing vehicle, the towed vehicle, and the drawbar. The safety chain or cable shall be of sufficient material and strength to prevent the 2nd vehicle from becoming separated and shall have no more slack than is necessary for proper turning. The safety chain or cable shall be attached to the trailer drawbar so as to prevent it from dropping to the ground, and to assure the towed vehicle follows in the course of the towing vehicle in the case the vehicles become separated. The requirement for chains or a cable does not apply to a semitrailer having a connecting device composed of a 5th-wheel and kingpin assembly, or to a pole trailer." And, something I found out....Even if you are legal in the state you are registered in, you can still be cited for non-compliance in another state. ;)

***** Sorry you've been disillusioned to that misconception. Every US state has their own laws. There isn't a continental law in this regard. (I have no idea what the laws are in Canada or Mexico.) Some states (US states that is.) only require one chain, no matter the weight of the trailer. Some don't have any laws requiring retention of the trailer tongue, or tow bar, in regards to keeping it from contacting the ground in a hitch or tongue failure.

+PB Salfen Fair But must states require you have the chains crossed ( Im a RV Hotshoter (Hauler). Make sure the hitch has provisions for the connection of safety chains, which are required by 37 states. When connected, safety chains should have some slack to permit sharp turns but should not drag on the road. In addition, they should cross under the trailer tongue to help prevent the tongue from dropping to the road in the event the trailer separates from the tow vehicle.

I had to research this about 6 months ago because I was going to tow my XJ. Everything I read said to leave it in gear with TC in nutearul if I remember right but also said to disconnect both front/rear drive shafts?

+TheAmericanUhate I think you would only have to remove the drive shafts if your t-case doesn't have a neutral position, however, removing them would be an easy insurance policy to not burn up your tranny.

I wish this video and comments had been out back then lol. I ended up giving up on towing in general. I had bought my Jeep while working in Arkansas and had to get it home in south Texas 600 miles away. It had sit up for 12 years in a car port. I got it running in their drive way and drove it home. Death wobble kicked in about 2 hours into Texas, took me 2 days of driving 45mph and sleeping in an autozone parking lot to get home lol. I replaced all the tie rod ends in the parking lot but it didn't help. The Jeep was way too over loaded I think, it was bottoming out on every bump I hit.

Would the same setup work to tow a 4wd vehicle on a standard wheel lift tow truck? I was always under the impression they needed to be towed on a flatbed.

+27dcx Do you mean full time awd like a Subaru? If so then i believe yes. My mothers 2015 Forester had some issues and needed to be towed to the dealership and the driver lifted the front end on his lift and the back had to ride on some dollies. I dont think there is anyway to completely disconnect the drivetrain easily so you wont do damage. I could be wrong though.

27dcx Well some Grand Cherokees have all time awd with no neutral option in the transfer case, the Quadra-drive 1 option is like this and cant be flat towed or towed with one set of wheels still on the ground. The Quadra-drive 2 option is a different transfer case that allows the operator to select from automatic or the "fulltime" awd selection or 4low or neutral, jeeps with this option can be flat towed or be towed by the traditional two wheels up and two down method. Im pretty sure Jk's and Wranglers never had the quadra-drive options only the WJ and WK. If your transfer case has the option of neutral you should be able to tow it by other means than a flatbed or on dollies.

+jamesmora100 Everything I've read on the XJ's has always said to leave the transmission in gear, transfer case in 4 high or 4 low and disconnect both front/rear drive shafts. I had to tow my 90 XJ a while back and researched for a while. I ended up just spending a little extra to rent an actual car hauler from uhaul.

+jamesmora100 You don't want to leave the Auto Tranny in neutral because there are valves/soleniods and clutches and all kinds of things that need to operate to keep the tranny cool under rotation. If the motor is turned off, the solenoids wont open the valve body and let the tranny fluid flow to cool the internals. As the heat builds up, so does pressure. You can destroy the internal seals as well as over heat and burn the clutch discs in the tranny. Really not worth the risk. Let your transfer case take the heat (id doesn't have valves, clutches, etc.) and it will be fine.

+Joshua Poche That's why you put the transfer case in neutral. It then disconnects the tranny from the wheels and any rotation. If you don't have a 4x4 with a transfer case, this wont work.

when using safety chains it best not to hook them up to the hitch because it the hitch were to rip off the truck they won't do any thing

dear god do not put your vehicle in gear!!! it'll be turning your engine over and over as you drive good way to destroy your entire drive train and engine. you should leave the vehicle out of gear and free wheeling.....you'll have less rolling resistance too

Parker Wagner I rematch ed it....I didn't realize all 4 wheels were drive through the tease and not the transmission to the tease to the front axle. but this tow method will only work for vehicles setup the same way

There is no reason to show how his jeep is hooked up as his jeep is unique with his aftermarket bumpers and equipment. It wouldn't be the same for another jeep. So really you are complaining about nothing.
