Almost done with the arrow so it's time to fletch it and then shoot it! Turkey wing feathers are what we use in the video. They're better than the tail feathers because they have a curve and that helps the arrow spin. Water fowl feathers are also very good because they're more water resistant.
In previous videos in this video we made an arrow shaft from dogwood, chipped (knapped) an arrowhead from chert, and hafted the arrowhead to the shaft.

Very interesting, the whole process of making the arrow is really quite an art form 👌 I'd imagine back in the day some makers would have their arrows quite sort after for their accuracy and stable flight which I'd guess all comes down to the fine tuning and flight characteristics of the way the materials are put together! 👌

I think you are right, it’s all about the materials and technique involved. I have some arrows from Columbia that are around five feet long but the natives who hunted bison from horses had fairly short arrows.

Using melted pine pitch /tar along with the sinew wrap for the point helps alot in keeping it stabilized and in place when it hardens its usually in there for the duration of the arrow life unless it is broken off by sticking a hard surface but 90 percent of time the base is usually still within.

I’ve never really dyed feathers but I have put dye to porcupine quills. Kool Aid, actually, works quite well. More natural dyes like butternut, blood root, beet juice, grapes, things like that make good dyes but they will fade much more quickly.
