The Only Scrimshaw Tool You Actually Need

You don't need much to practice the ancient art of scrimshaw, and the only scrimshaw tool you actually need is a needle. That's right, sailers often used a sail needle, which has a triangular head, to make their scrimshaw. Of course, other tools are helpful and you needn't limit yourself to only a needle, unless you want to.
Brian also shares an example of the stipple method done on a whale tooth, we're guessing around 1861. The stippled holes are clearly triangular, so would have been done with a sail needle.

That "ink eraser" sir is an ivory-handled scalpel. It was used for "bleeding" patients and, of course, as a scalpel. I am sure it also makes a nice ink eraser :). You do nice work by the way....

@@StockmanOriginal Brian your "ink" eraser is very reminiscent of a tool that was used to do bleeding of stock by vets. It was called a fleem.

Hey scbane, thanks for watching. There are so many ways to approach scrimshaw, it comes down to what ever works is good. I specialize in carving so I have a lot of different tools that I have made over the years. But starting out what ever works works.

Hi Brian, I enjoy your channel! I am wondering about the size of sailors needles to use? I have found a place online that sale a newer version of sailors needles, but they offer several different sizes and I didn't want to order too big or too small thinking that I wouldn't use them. I figured I'd seat them in some deer antler into hardwood dowel. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Keep up the great work! Very Respectfully Yours: Shawn W Bell

Actually different sizes is a good thing because then you can make different sized scratches. If you watch the comprehensive scrimshaw guide, or the whale tooth video, linked in the pinned comment you can see some of the uses of different lines to create definition in your scrimshaw. Setting the needles in deer antler is a great idea. (That’s what I do often.) Thanks for watching!

What would be the easiest go to tool for a beginner? I bought some scribing pens that I thought would work but I'd like to add more tools. My plan is to scrim on my powder horn.
@StockmanOriginal

Brian started out with using x-acto blades, way back when. Those are easy to come by. That's a straight scribe type, good for lines (including cross hatching). You could also easily get a sail needle online or probably at a fabric store and then you could make your own handle for it. (Your hands will thank you for using a handle bigger than a needle!) The sail needle's triangular head would allow you to drill like Brian did on the whale's eye in the whale tooth video.

I use sewing needles in clutch pencil holders. I never sharpen them. I just toss the needle out if it gets dull and put in a new one.

They don’t get much sharper than when they’re new. That’s cool about the mechanical pencil as a holder, I’ll have to try that.

What is the essential tool for Scrimshaw? Should its spike be triangular or round? I would like to start by learning the technique on cow bones. Can you point me to a selling link? Thank you, happy holidays with health.

Hello Arkas, and welcome to the tribe! You can check out our other video on tools and techniques for scrimshaw, that might help you out. But if you were going to limit yourself to one tool l would recommend a large sharp needle. The steel in those is very good, hard ,and will hold a point. Some will even fit in a mechanical pencil. You want a large one so it is ridged and wouldn’t break. If you have any trouble finding what you need just let me know and I’ll get something for you.

@@StockmanOriginal To be honest with you I looked at the scrimshaw kit on Amazon but it is sold out but also has a lot of negative reviews. I wouldn't want to stick to one tool but would like the basic tool to start with. I will watch your videos for the umpteenth time with more attention. Thank you for your help. Merry Christmas with health.
