In this video I go through the whole start to finish on how to setup your rod and reel to flip grass. I show you what jig I throw and all the techniques for flipping hydrilla. My buddy Jason and I even hit the lake and catch some nice ones which is helpful because you can see how we set the hook, how we flip, and what we are looking for in the grass.

MY PROFILE:
I started fishing when I was just a young kid and instantly fell in love with Bass Fishing. Started fishing tournaments when I was in high school and have been fishing them ever since. For years I fished every tournament I could enter sometimes fishing as many as 45 tournaments a year. I qualified for the Elites when I was 30 but didn't have the sponsors or money to compete so I turned it down. Got sponsor support later and fished the FLW Tour for 2 years and having been fishing the Toyotas since 2006. I’ve won 5 Angler of the Year Titles becoming the only fishermen to have more than 3 AOYs in the Toyota series. Won numerous events along the way that has helped shape my way into working for Strike King as head of product innovation. Along the way, I picked up a camera and started filming my endeavors. I have now fallen in love with making videos about fishing and delivering it to you. Follow along the journey...it should be an honest and fun ride!

Good video. I think your combination of showing your setups, talking about your technique, then showing all that in action is absolutely the best educational format which, IMO, is exactly what most anglers want to see.

You have quickly become my go-to KZfaq guy. Great info, great laughs and ZERO condescension. I like how you show how you do it and then say, basically, to do what works for each of us. I used to watch a certain well known fishing pro until a month or so ago when he said if you aren't doing (certain technique) the way he does it, you are an idiot. Thanks for another great video!

I guess at 5'6" I'm not gonna catch any fish with a 7'5" with the tip submerged 6" into the water. A 7'0 ft Heavy does me fine, and I catch plenty!!! I'm aware of the advantages of longer rods - most of my spinning rods are 7'4 - 7'6, but tip down applications just a bit too much to adapt not working down to make those pitches close to the water for a soft entry! Great video, and good explanations!

My only question is, and I’m not sure what month you filmed this, but, did you work the thicker grass first, then to sparser grass, shallow to deep? Or did you know of a drain, or something different near where y’all were flipping to put y’all there on them. BTW, I do appreciate honesty about rods and reels..because I’m the same way.....when I find a combo for a certain application that works, I tend to keep it..
@toddcastledinefishing5924

I filmed it couple of days ago. The grass isn't growing like it usually does so it wasn't as thick. We got some bites and kept searching around trying different stuff. We came back 2 hours later and caught them even better. It just so happened that's where they wanted to be. No drain just a flat.

Always cool to see a big hook-set on bass in vegetation... Interesting how the guys who know what makes grass fishing go don’t disclose much about specific locations within “the grass...” It’s mostly specific tackle companies and fish catches. If you want to get good at grass fishing, spend all your time reading it, fishing it, and the lightbulb will go off... Most of the bass, especially the bigger ones, are in 5-10% or < of the grass; location, location, location. Actually catching them is quite easy once you find them and typically several baits will maximize the spot. If you’re struggling reading grass and locating fish, watch Seth Feider’s videos, as he discloses the juice. Peace ~

you ever put the menace on as a trailer instead? seems like it will do the same thing/action as that rage bug and keeps it even more compact. or does the rage bug give you the bulk your looking for as well?
@toddcastledinefishing5924
@toddcastledinefishing5924 3 жыл бұрын
I just think rage bug gives more action than the menace. However, like you said if the difference is so little you gotta put something on and I'm not a guy on things of that nature to mean that much to worry. Now other things yes, and I think the Rage craw compared to either is a big difference.

Its a preference thing, I would worry about the length if the rod is the right rod to flip.

Does the actual ratio change with less line or the ‘inches per turn’ instead? Same result right?
@toddcastledinefishing5924
@toddcastledinefishing5924 2 жыл бұрын
no it does affect the ratio with less line
@jamessipes122
@jamessipes122 Жыл бұрын
Gear ratio is set by the gears and thus does not change with line fill. The amount of line pick up is changed by the spool diameter. More line, bigger diameter, more pickup per spool turn 18:09

Ok Two questions 1. Are you flipping super thick grass like on the Potomac if you been there where it just looks like fields of hydrilla 2- is it more productive to move off and find that more sparse grass and flip that jig around?
@toddcastledinefishing5924
@toddcastledinefishing5924 3 жыл бұрын
sometimes we are fishing the fields of Hydrilla and this was a mix of sparse and thick. For some reason they were on the sparse stuff. The grass is growing different this year on that lake so we kinda had to figure it out. I love fishing the sparse stuff when they are in it because you can call your shot better and it visually easier to spot.

You should do a vid where you put a camera under water under some mats....facing upward, and fishing a frog. So when can see how it looks from a bass' perspective. Make sure it's a sunny day. That'd be sweet.
