Very, very helpful. I was looking for a step-by-step protocol, and this video nailed it. Thank you very much, Jonas. Cheers, mate.

Im gonna harp in here. You should have mentioned the inclusion of crush washers on both drain bolts. 2nd, depending where you live you might wanna reconsider "tap" water. In SE UK, Kent, NEVER, NEVER EVER USE TAP WATER in UK!! Too much salts. Rain water is fine. 3rd - thermostats should have a pinned bleed hole so, running to temp should not be necessary, just give a moment. Make sure the bleed hole is top, most thermostats are keyed anyway. What to watch out for are hoses that can create an airlock. Great video production. Lottsa good info in here. 👍

Agreed, but regarding the weep hole , it is to small to fill the rest of the system before it reaches op temp. Better to get it to temp to make sure the system is bleed off well
@N269
@N269 10 ай бұрын
@@Projekt1 sorta agree, but the weep hole will get compressed if the temp of the coolant creates expansion.... therefore, as I did on my Cummins and Perkins, just let it a few moments, is should allow air to pass without any heat pressure restricting it by pressing the pin.... my experience... have a burger and watch the grass grow for 10 mins. ☺️☺️🏍️🏍️🏍️👍👍👍

There is still conflicting info, but if you search “distilled and aluminum” , alot will come out. What I read was a journal long time ago where it says distilled will erode aluminium due to ions”something something” 😬 I forgot about the details. I did noticed it on my bmw when I was putting distilled.

@@Projekt1 Thanks for the reply buddy - looked into it and it appears that it's the opposite to what you suggested - distilled water causes almost no damage to aluminum, tap water will cause damage due to the salts / minerals in the water..

@@FixItWithJon there is finding that because its deionised, it thend to grab ions from the metal that causes it to strip material with it

Hi Jonas,i did a coolant change today. Drained from the pump the block and the expansion tank. Filled up to the neck of the radiator,topped up the tank and ran it until the thermostat opened but the temperatur keeps rising all the way to 112c without the fan kicking in. The thermostat did open,i saw the level drop quite fast. I did not have enough fluid to top it all the way back up because i only got 3 liters. Will get more tomorrow. But what could be the reason for the fan not starting? It has never failed before i did this. Can it still be air in the system that does this or that the level is abit to low?
@Projekt1
@Projekt1 Жыл бұрын
Could be your thermostat switch. Disconnect the thermostat switch from the fan and then direcly ground the fan to the body (-), if the fan runs then its confirmed it the switch
@harryw9598
@harryw9598 Жыл бұрын
kjet 112c is way hot, better check your thermostat could be stuck closed.if your dial says 112c measure your rad temp. if cooler than 112 its deffo your thermo. they do go bad over the years,and top of is a must. for 98/99 cbr900rr riders vfr 800 thermostat also fits your bike

It's possible you've got air trapped near the fan switch, located on top of the left radiator. This will prevent it from kicking in. Gently unscrew the hose clamp there and run the system for a bit (starting out cold ofcourse) until fluid seeps out. That should get rid of some air and might work.

@@Projekt1 thanks, after watching again i realised, sometimes you can see and hear without taking it in! ....thanks for getting back. I've had a gen 5 for about 9yrs and have been slowing adding replacement parts. The biggest job so far was replacing the throttle bodies, (and it still works!!) so it's given me the confidence to really give it a make over. Next purchase is an abba stand. Fork service and swing arm bearings, and so on and so on, 🤣 Regards Steve

Tap water has dissolved sediments that will eventually clog up the radiators small tubes. Distilled water is a small price to pay for a clean cooling system.

I use to invest on distilled, couldn’t even call it invest coz they are very cheap as you’ve said, but not until I read an article about distilled stripping of aluminium and resulting to pinholes. Anyway, it was only used for flushing ,it did not even reach boiling point.

@@Projekt1 I don't have a way of properly disposing of used coolant. I don't want to throw it down the drain or dump it anywhere. The nearest recycling center for coolant isn't nearby. I've called a couple of motorcycle repair shops. They can flush the system and replace the coolant for $150. It sounds like a lot of money but I don't like to deal with chemicals

Distilled water will do harm than good in the long run. A few ppm wouldn’t do harm, considering the water doesn’t reach boiling point. It was only used for flushing. Coolant is the majority that is present during engine operation
