4 ай бұрынI have been travelling with cats for the last three years on planes, trains & automobiles, so here’s my advice on taking your cat on a plane!
Step 1: Carriers
• You’ll want to pick a carrier your cats are comfortable with/in. Atlas prefers an expandable backpack.
• A few weeks before the trip, put the carrier out so they can get comfortable around it. This helps them associate the carrier with ALARM
Step 2: Tote Bag of Goodies
• A collapsible litterbox
• Large pee pads
• A water holder
• Hydrating treats
• Collapsible food bowl
• PLENTLY of wipes
• PLENTY of zip block bags
• Litter
• Plastic gloves
(I got all of these products from @chewy & Amaz0n!)
Step 3: Medication
• Homeopet Anxiety Drops (they work OK)
• Ask your vet for Gabapentin (or like)
• Give you cats the medication the night before the flight & the morning of an hour before the airport!
Step 4: Food/Bathroom
• A few hours before the flight take their food away
• Make sure they try to go to the bathroom before you leave
Airport
• Reserve an IN PET CABIN tag in advance online! This was $125 per flight.
Security
• You can ask for a PRIVATE SCREENING ROOM (takes a lot of time)
• OR walk your cat through the detector
Airplane:
• Isle Seat = quick access to bathroom for them
• Window = less interruptions of people walking by
• Bring a blanket/sweatshirt to cover their carrier so they can sleep
• If they can sleep or are loud- put the carrier on your lap!

In college I took my cat back home. I was in first class and my kitten had EXPLOSIVE diarrhea and I thought the man next to me had gotten sick. I had to go to the first class bathroom (the entire first class air was impossible to breath) and WASH AND RING OUT my kitten with my bare hands. It was the worst experience ever and all of these ideas would have solved that problem!!!!

Omg how awful for everyone - kitty, you, and the first class cabin of the airline! I can identify with those moments, but with children. I've not flown with any of my cats yet. These are definitely fabulous tips on a better chance at a successful flight with a cat 🐈 😀.

This happened to me with my dog! I had been flying with him for 10+ years with no accidents, so when I smelled a horrible smell I would have sworn it was someone with rancid farts. But NOPE, it was my dog and he was completely covered in diarrhea and so was his kennel. It was sooo embarrassing!

I'm actually so incredibly happy with this video. This is the first time I've seen a KZfaqr bringing a pet on a flight do it right and not get a fake ESA/SD registration/id/certificate just for the flight. She even explained every necessary precaution to take and every necessary amount and kind of supplies to bring. Absolutely amazing❤ Edit: I somehow forgot to mention something that she might have forgotten. If you are traveling with an animal, carry vaccination records. They can ask for them (for the safety of other people and animals) and can deny you your flight if you don't provide them. Other than that, this video is great.

In the European Union your pet also needs to have a microchip and rabies vaccine.

I worked once for major airline in my country, so here some important additions tips. First, don't ever wing the medication, always check with the vet. Some medicine can drop blood pressure of your pet, and this can be potentially lethal. Airlines will not take responsibility for this kind of damage. Second, if you ever need to fly with your pet in luggage area (avih) have this information attached to carrier: name of the pet, destination, owner contacts, any medication taken before flight, and time of taking, when was last given food and water, date of last rabies vaccination, and have orientation sticker on. Usually stickers come with crates, but if not write this on paper and glue it on the crate. If there is a delayed flight, or, heaven forbid, mixed up or lost luggage situation this measures can save your pets life. Be safe, and may you and your companion have the best flight experience!

My husband was a pilot for a major airline. (retired) Whenever he knew there was an animal traveling in the cargo area, he would always try to check on them when possible.

Your advice is spot-on❣️ A few years ago, I needed to cat sit for my grandcat (for several months). This meant flying from Louisiana to Utah, picking up the cat, back to my house, then the eventual return trip (from LA to OR.). I prepped for every scenario - I watched so many videos, chatted with my airline, chatted with TSA, even practiced loading an unruly cat (son’s cat is not an easy guy to deal with, and he’s a chonk). I was so nervous. But everything went as smoothly as I could have hoped❣️ I requested “private screening,” and that was a breeze (basically, I sat in an enclosed room with Dipper while TSA scanned the carrier). I had the porta-potty, and I prearranged for son to ship me some son-scented items (a few unwashed t-shirts), including a small bag of litter with Dipper’s scent. I got a carrier that opens out (like you show), so he could have some stretch room between flights. The only thing I didn’t prepare for……your cat-in-carrier counts as your carry-on item, so my wheeled carry-on had to be checked - I couldn’t use my wheeled carry-on as a cat transporter 😢. The flights were tight due to adverse weather, which meant I had to hoof-it to get from plane to plane…..and I had to carry him. It was exhausting. But, on the trip to return him to son, hubby was with me so we used his carry-on as transport. I feel like a pro (and, I have since bought a lightweight, collapsible trolly that’s designed to go with our carriers….just in case I ever have to do this again).

This is really informative. I've know there's a service that will drive your pets cross country but obviously that's better for multiple pets. I have a few cats so I've always wondered how I would fly w them. One has been n the car a few times and did great. What airlines are yall using? Also your awesome for keeping ur grandads cat. I inherited my grandfather cat and she's my best friend ever. ❤️ take care.

I LOVE cats. Here’s my question. I know a lot of people have terrible allergies to them. Some so bad they can go into respiratory distress. How do airlines ensure a unsuspecting flyer isn’t seated near a cat or where a cat has been?

You must inform that you want to travel with your cat or if you're allergic to cats. That way, the airlines can make sure you're not on a flight where someone may die due to an allergic reaction to a pet. (Whether it's you or someone else.)

You take the cruise ship instead. Yes, you do need to tell the airline you are allergic to cats, dogs, etc. However, most airlines are so clueless that they won't take you seriously. Plus if you are extremely allergic, anyone on that plane might have a lot of cat or dog hairs on them, which could still trigger an anaphylaxic reaction. A cruise ship has more air space and you can get fed in your room. Plus, they are more accommodating and understanding of allergies. Another thing you can do is simply pay more to fly 1st class in a plane that has doors for 1st class, and wear a n95 mask with a vog mask. Some people say that the Vog mask by itself is all they need, but I've not tested it yet. Also, breathing with both on, might not work for long term, so I'd get fresh air in there whenever I could between my nose and the masks, but being careful.

@@tpkyterooluebeck9224 ^ Very true. It's probably also why it's not uncommon for people to sometimes catch a cold after a plane flight (airlines can do what they can to make sure passengers are comfortable, butthere's only so much people can do when packed in like sardines close together).

While I don't have an epi pen, I am very allergic to cats. I have dogs, so I am not unsympathetic to animals. I was on a flight to Japan, and the lady next to me had a cat. I was miserable the entire flight. I had allergy medication with me, but it really wasn't enough.

Just for the car, but I put a blanket that he's used on the bottom inside the carrier. Not just the scent, but it's also warmer and more comfortable than the plastic of the carrier.

I flew with my cats 2 months ago and it was absolute chaos. I moved from the uk to canada and flew my two very anxious cats. They were so anxious they kept non stop peeing themselves out of fear to the point they soaked through their carriers. Then I didn’t even have time to clean them because we had to go through border control. I will never fly my cats again, please don’t fly ur cats unless u have no choice.

That's also what I think. I got my dog from Romania and we flew. He was in the cargo department. You could tell it was stressful and confusing for him when he got out. But he was fine after a while. I just think it's unnecessary stress for the animal if you travel for pleasure with the pet.

Just so you know in Europe you are only allowed a window seat with your pet. In case of emergency they could delay the evacuation of other passengers otherwise.

That makes no sense. The bottleneck in an evacuation is the doors of the airplane. Do they also require children, old, or disabled people to sit in the window seats? A parent trying to lift and run with a child (not in a carrier) could be as much of a liability.

@@alexbennet4195 I'm not saying a child isn't a priority. I'm saying the rules aren't reasonable, as in they don't follow reason or logic. Could go both ways. There would be a requirement regarding children one way or the other, if it actually mattered. If a slow person sitting in the isle vs window really changed the evacuation, you would think they'd require parents to sit in isle seats with children to give them a faster exit. But they also don't, because it doesn't matter. The number of exits will determine how fast you get off. The pet rule is only there because someone complained, not because it actually helps the evacuation. It's still 1 person per door at time, which leaves plenty of time to stand up and pick something up, like a child... or a pet carrier.

I travelled with 4 dogs over I think 2000 miles (if my memory is good lol). It was rough. 1: get meds is possible from your vet, and visit your vet, especially for elderly dogs to make sure it is safe for them to fly! 2: put potty pads under them during the flight as a procaution, it's not that comfy but it's a lot better than risking the alternative. You can also do potty pads under their blankets so at least if accidents happen then it won't get on the bag. 3: calm them when possible, it's stressful flying for the first time! Try to get an outside seat so you won't bother that many people and getting your pet from under your seat will be easier. 3: Bringing pets on is expensive, unless they're a ESA or service animal, ask your therapist, most trained dogs will pass the emotional service test if you have a chill therapist. Bring your papers and you're good to go!

Actually, nowadays most flights have banned even ESA's free flights, since a lot of people faked them with fake scam registrations, certifications, and identifications. So, unless it's a task trained service animal required for a disability, you'll have to pay the pet fee. It kinda sucks, but it's always the bad eggs that ruin it for everyone else 🙄

I take gabapentin for neuropathy in my feet, not anxiety, how strange, i guess it affects animals differently.

gabapentin is prescribed for anxiety in humans too! guess it has multiple uses

Gabapentin is actually originally developed for the treatment of epilepsy. Later it was found that it could also be used for neuropathic pain. It’s effective in the treatment of long-term anxiety disorders. The use in panic disorders is debated. In humans at least. Veterinary pharmacology is not my area of expertise.

@quirkyblackenby maybe for cats anxiety often comes from pain? Like for the plane case - animals and babies are much more sensitive to the vibrations and engine sound, and that causes them pain and confusion, hence why babies always/often cry out.

Even though I’m subscribed, I don’t see your videos often so I forget about what happened to Otto and get confused. When I scrolled back and found the videos this time it kind of hit hard because my outdoor cat passed about 2 years ago around this time. We just provided her with food and temporary shelter as my parents aren’t really animal people, but your videos give me such a warm feeling. Hopefully one day I’ll have my own space I can invite kitty into.

Another thing you should do, (and my vet recommends this) is to try the anxiety medications BEFORE the flight. Some animals get more distressed by medications. They can get disoriented and get more freaked out.

When you book your flight you should list allergies including pets, food and other allergy. People travelling with animals pay the extra fees and requirements for travel. Others should also do what’s required when booking their flight ticket

My cats had gabapentin when we moved. It was about an hour or so of a car ride, and the youngest who actually took his meds was drowsy.

Today I learned that gabapentin is used for kitty anxiety. In people, its used for nerve pain and seizure control. I assume it can be used for that in kitties also but I’m not sure. Very cool! Thanks for sharing

Also check what the spcific airlines pet requirements are and make sure your pet carrier is within the size requirements. And if you vet gives you any medications for your pet test them before you get in the plane so that no reactions happen.

PSA: Ask for an extra pill so that you can check how your pet reacts to the medication before the day of travel. Sometimes they get more anxious rather than calm.

Also! Whe you are lifting off or landing, give your cat those lick treats. They do not know how to pop their ears, so giving them something to constantly swallow will help prevent pain :)

I would stop feeding them the night before myself, so hopefully theyre emptied out come flight time That and treats will be more enticing to get them into the carrier lol

My moms takes Gabipentian for nerve pain due to neuropathy, ive never heard of them for anxiety. Not saying they're not given for that, just never heard of it being used as such

Many drugs have multiple uses. It’s very common for this use with pets. My vet recently advised using it for a similar reason.

My sibling moved cross country and their vet said no food or water for a certain time before flight (idr how long) their cat also got gabapentin the night before and a couple hours before. It was 0 problems

Most vets WON’T give you a sedative for flying with pets. It’s not good to give them unnecessary medication, especially sedatives. And take their food away about 12 hours before. Most cats get anxious with new surroundings and unless your trip is multiple days, they probably won’t feel comfortable using the litter box in a new place so we don’t bring one. We line their carriers with pee pads and bring extras and wipes and old wash clothes to clean them up if they have an accident. On 3 separate international moves my cats didn’t go to the bathroom 🚽 once even when we brought a portable litter pan.

Gabapentin is one of the safest drugs to use. I’ve used for my own cat 5kg 300mg of Gabapentin which is also equivalent for 30kg dog. Highest dose of Gabapentin I used in field was 1200mg Gabapentin with 800mg of trazodone for a 40kg dog. It’s hard to overdose on Gabapentin

@@RUSTYFARIAAgreed! I started traveling with my dog in 2007 and the medication recommendations have changed over the years. In my experience, vets have definitely moved away from prescribing benzodiazepines like Xanax for safety reasons while flying. Some vets are very cautious about giving medications if the pet will be flying in the cargo area since they won’t be supervised, but most will still be ok with giving gabapentin. Vets ask recommended you trial your pet on whatever medication is given to see how your pet reacts and to make sure the dose is ok. But yes, gabapentin is a safe med that every vet I’ve seen has recommended.

It’s not a sedative! It calms them but that’s about it. It doesn’t make them sleep. Sedatives typically induce a state of lack of consciousness or lack of full consciousness! This seems to be more like anxiety medication (it calms the nerves, reduces panic, doesn’t actually effect consciousness)! 😅

Damn i bought that same carrier for my cat, he only went in it once. I wish he had liked it as much as your cat does! What airlines have you flown with it? For Aircanada and Aeromexico that carrier was bigger than the dimensions their websites say they allow
