Anything you publish in the United States is yours for 70 years past your death. You don't need to file or pay for copyright. You only need to establish the date, and that's valid by simply emailing yourself a final draft.

Hi Sean is there a reason not to use KDP's pre-formatted "Paperback and Hardcover Manuscript Templates". I stumbled on these on the KDP site.

Honestly that must be new because I didn’t know that existed. We always format from scratch like this. If the templates are good then you can definitely use it, but there are bad templates out there.
