For anyone thinking "oh my basic little machine can't do this" a lot of times it can! I free motion quilt on a brother LX3125. It's nothing fancy, and I can't even lower my feed dogs. So what I did was order a "throat plate" to cover my them and a regular darning foot. Then I put my quilt sandwich in a small embroidery hoop that I can move easily to create my design. You have to quilt in small sections but it can be done! Give it a shot and happy quilting :)

Karen Alexander ( karenQuilts texas) What a great idea this post you put up is. I live in New Zealand and have decided after your post to call some hospitals and maybe nursing homes to find out the requirements they have for donated quilts. I do have a lot of fabric and love sewing quilts or lap size but can only give to so many we know. This is a great idea for practice and to keep doing what I love. THANKS and Happy Quilting

The BEST way to practice is to make 42" square baby quilts... There are MANY charity organizations who welcome baby and lap sized quilts. So easy to make and a fun and practical way to practice your free motion skills. Most local quilt guilds have a program for baby quilts. And may hospitals accept quilts. Check first to learn about any do's or don'ts to be sure your quilt is acceptable! Have fun... Babies are getting COLD!

Wonderful tutorial, thank you. I'm going to check and see if I can lower the feed dogs on my machine and do this too. (I'm a newbie, and its actually my mothers machine, but I'm learning from her... but I know she has not done this before, all of her quilting has been hand stitching !!). Just a thought.. I know this is "free motion" , but you were saying how it takes practice for the accuracy that you have. Would it work to use an iron-off pen to draw the pattern you want before hand, just to give you something to follow ? I guess you would need to choose a colour that shows up, or maybe you can do the quilting from the back instead, if you have a light colour backing (I'm such a noob I don't know if you can actually do that and have the stitch look right on both sides , so just thinking aloud here). Would love to hear your thoughts on that. Many thanks once again. Definitely subscribed :)

I am using my walking foot for the first time on a baby quilt. I am only stitching in the ditch on this one. My problem is some of my stitches are loose as it goes along and I sometimes my bottom thread bunches up and I have theses ugly loops in areas. Is this a tension issue? I've adjusted tension and stitch length and width but I am still having this problem. thanks for any help.
@Bestarstruck
@Bestarstruck 7 жыл бұрын
Penny Milligan Most likely this is a tension issue, but there are several other factors that can cause these issues. This would be my recommendation for troubleshooting.. Try only ONE thing at a time and then check your work. 1) Re-thread your machine and bobbin 2) Try switching your thread to something different, if you use cotton switch to poly or a lighter weight thread 3) Check and adjust your upper, lower and bobbin tension 4) Play with your stitch adjustments, they should be at zero. If these all fail resort to your manual and then call your machines company hotline to speak with a representative. Good luck!!👍

This is a good video. What I struggle with is when the bulk of the quilt is in front of me, falling in my lap, and the "drag" on pushing it into the machine is so great that I cannot form a good design. If you start at the top of the quilt, then you have the bulk of it in your lap, or rolled up on the table in front of you. I am experimenting with a homemade quilt suspension system. Thank you for these helpful videos and any advice from all you sewists out there would be welcome! I am new at FMQ.

Try searching KZfaq for videos of people setting up extension tables and sets of tables strategically placed around their sewing machine, to take the bulk of the weight of the quilt off the needle. I have the same issues, but it's time for a new machine for me (mine is a Pfaff Tiptronic 1019 from the early 1980's, and now the needle is stuck off-centre and it doesn't even sew a straight line anymore... so I'm waiting to see what I end up buying before I venture into extension table shopping. Leah C. Day has a good inexpensive table that will fit most machines and they cut a custom extension to fit your machine, but I think you'd still need the trestle tables with adjustable-height legs to complete the workspace. Good luck Petmom!

Thank you! I have a Tiara, and I do have the extensions on the side. I did watch Leah Day's videos, and she put a board in front of her table, by her tummy, to hold the quilt up. I experimented with that and it works great! I had these 2 shelf unit things, and I put one on each side of me at the table. I put 2 boards that are slick (for a closet) on top of them, across the front of me, and they are almost perfectly even with the table. This extra 5 inches in front of me makes all the difference! It keeps the quilt up off my lap. I also put some hooks in the ceiling and hung some bungees, and clamps, so I can clamp up the quilt and take some of the weight off. It seems to be a great combination. Good luck on getting your new machine. How exciting!!

I like your video 'how to' for free-motion' quilting. I don't think you mentioned stitch length, only with a walking foot...Do we need to adjust our stitch length for free-motion quilting and what should the length be? What about pulling up the bobbin thread, starting and ending to tie off, before cutting threads? So, another great video with more of these basics would be greatly appreciated for all of us who are just starting out with free-motion. Thanks for this video, looking forward to viewing more! :)
@FatQuarterShopTX

+Carol Wood You will want to test your stitches on a spare piece of fabric. Stitch length all depends on your machine. I'd recommend starting at a 3.0.
@cazfromoz1
@cazfromoz1 8 жыл бұрын
+Fat Quarter Shop I've recently been advised when you drop feed dogs for free-motion quilting the stitch length should be "0", so now I'm really confused - not sure if what you're saying is correct. So, PLEASE explain. Thank you. :)
@FatQuarterShopTX
@FatQuarterShopTX 8 жыл бұрын
+Carol Wood Your tension might need to be zero. Per Vanessa, "Just a regular stitch length. The most important thing is consistent speed when doing free motion quilting so the stitch length is consistent. As far as threads go, it's good to start just outside the quilt-top (in the surrounding batting/backing) and that way you won't actually have to deal with that."
@cazfromoz1
@cazfromoz1 6 жыл бұрын
1). What speed are you going in relation to the pedal (or are you using auto-speed)? 2). Are you using knee-lifter bar to control presser foot for free motion while both hands control the movement of the quilt? How do you keep stitch length consistent for quilting, with stopping and starting? I noticed you didn't wear gloves, is that safe? I like your quilting design method, so I'll try it.
@FatQuarterShopTX
@FatQuarterShopTX 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Carol! Vanessa is not using auto-speed, she is operating the foot pedal. She is going at a moderate speed, however this is going to vary depending on your comfort level. Typically the faster you go, the more smoothly your design will look, but it can be nerve-wracking to start out fast, so practice on scrap fabric and batting to see what speed is right for you before starting an important project. She is not using the knee-lift bar in this tutorial. Consistent stitch length will come with time and practice! Gloves is also a personal choice, some quilters feel much safer with them on. Some gloves are merely help create more friction to the quilt top, so it is less likely to slip. We do offer quilting gloves in the store for those different purposes: www.fatquartershop.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=gloves Hope this was helpful!

It's ideal to stay with your brand of machine for items. If there's ever a problem that was caused by your accessory foot you used and it was a foot for that machine by that company then you better chances of warranty covering it.

Deirdre Montesi I feel your pain! I am not a long time quilter but have sewn for over 40 years and it is very hard so far. I am having a bit of success on my first ever sofa throw with stitching wonky hearts, which are a component of the fabric print, and echoing them yo fill the center of the square. Somehow this image of the heart is much easier than the circles and waves I tried. I did have to set my ever present perfectionism aside. Good luck!

Only 20 minutes? Wow, lol, you must be good! I have a sit-down mid-arm, a Tiara, and I am struggling with the weight of the quilt. I am trying out a suspending system, with hooks from the ceiling, to hold the weight. Luckily, the quilt I am working on has a very busy fabric, and matching thread, so my mistakes are practically invisible. And it is for me, so I don't mind the boo boos.
@HRHDMKYT
@HRHDMKYT 7 жыл бұрын
Sometimes when you think it's not working out, try changing your thread; you'd be amazed at the difference using good thread. Also a 'busy' fabric on the back hides a multitude of imperfections. But just like piano lessons and cake decorating and all kinds of hand-muscle-memory activities: practice, practice, practice. You could also start with placemats, table runners, picnic/beach blankets... where it doesn't so much matter how it looks. Good luck!
@petmomful2260
@petmomful2260 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it helps to start on small things! I made some little mats to put under our pet's water dish. I am trying to make myself a small lap quilt. I used a very busy Tim Holtz fabric that looks vintage and it is hiding a lot of mistakes. It is just for my little dog and I to snuggle under. The piece of fabric is so pretty, I just used it for a whole cloth quilt, and put some borders on it. I did some embroidery on the borders, and I am sort of using it as a learning experience. lol I am using a pretty good thread, and my tension is good, but I think it is just what you said, I need practice!!! Good thing it is so fun! I have not gotten very good yet because I had severe arthritis in my neck and was in too much pain to sit in front of my machine. But after the doctors failed me, I went on a vegan, whole foods, plant based diet 7 months ago, and my neck pain went away. Now I need to sit down and practice a bit each day. So many projects, so little time!! lol Thanks for your response.
