The number #1 question I get is "Ozzie how do I get a cat-d licence?" so I've decided to do this video to discuss the topic… The information I talk about is freely available on the Queensland Weapons Licensing website, so it's no real secret, however I clear up some of the requirements in this video. You will need to:
[1] Register a business
[2] Obtain insurance (usually about $1000 / year)
[3] Obtain 4-6 contracts from property owners who need your services
[4] Complete a Category-D safety course
[5] Justify why you need a Category-D licence to do your work
[6] Complete the application form for a new licence or additional categories if you already have a licence (such as an A/B licence)

Getting my cat d here in nsw was one of the hardest things I've ever done. The scrutiny, the waiting, the cost, the waiting, the permits, the waiting. ... damn it was a pain in the arse. Then getting screwed over by one of the biggest firearms dealers in the country because he was too lazy to order what I paid him to order and then having to screw around with the attorney general for two more months trying to fix the problem drove me insane. If you're trying to get into cat d just for the guns then you will fail. You have to be serious about setting the business up. Also if you think you're gonna make millions you're kidding yourself. It's good work but SOOOO regulated. Good luck to anyone trying to set it up though. Also if you're in nsw/vic or anywhere really give Rob Ripa at The Victorian Armoury a call and he'll help you with your guns. I found him after I got screwed over by a company that shall remain nameless and he's the real deal. He's a bloke just like any other but he runs a small business and runs it well, plus he really knows the laws.

Vic here, friends' boss owns, lives on, and operates his 100 acre property as a produce farm. He's got workers and trucks, warehouses etc on the property. He also co-operates 2 other 100 acre properties not far from his home. LRD won't give him a Cat C 22 for the rabbits that cost him $30,000+ MINIMUM in loses every year. He's applying again now, but apparently tax returns stating his loses, all the money he's spent on fencing, nets and what not still isn't enough to satisfy LRD that his bolt action 5 round 22's isn't satisfactory enough for his needs. It's fucking bullshit.

Interesting stuff. In America, you have about the same level of red tape to get a machinegun license. After 1986, citizens can't buy newly made machineguns unless they are registered as a dealer or manufacturer AND they have a 'demo letter' from a law enforcement agency to demonstrate the firearm for possible sale. You guys have it much worse down there. We can buy AR-15's off the shelf or build them in our home with no license required. You can get 80% receivers and buy the rest of the parts online. An hour or two of work with some rudimentary tools and you can have an AR-15... legally! How's that lever-action shotgun controversy going down there?

RyeOnHam The fight is still on mate, some States have said that they have put it on hold till next year, but it proves what I have been trying to educate shooters about down here and that's "the anti-gunners don't go away, they just come back year after year for another bite of the cherry until you have nothing left" so we must be like them - never give up!

***** There is hope. The laws here have been getting better for about 15 years with the internet spreading the good word. Silencers & Short Barreled rifles/shotguns have become more available and mainstream. Concealed carry laws have been getting better and many old laws are being rolled back. Informative, though, Australia has a large geographical land mass and a small army, granted they are part of the British Commonwealth with many other nations and this is why local industry is important, but.... If your country gets invaded, the first people you look for are those who prevented (hindered) you from looking after yourself and your community.

Scott Mac Using suppressors is the neighbourly thing to do in my view… The fact you don't even need a licence in NZ to have them, they are virtually 'expected' in the UK and the fact that crime rates don't go soaring when you have them legal for civilian use, to me, just shows that it's a 'no-brainer' - we should have access to them…

Government should allow for Multigun/IPSC or even to allow into dedicated Service Rifle clubs to be made and fulfill the requirements for Catagory C and D with sound rules of mandatory participation etc. Honestly its coming up two decades since NFA and I think a mature discussion should be had. I hope the feral pest guys take no offence in this and I know all FPCs are stand up and professional but if you can shoot at fleeing animals kind of an uncontrolled scenario then how a range club with controlled enviroment/rules etc cant be allowed to utilise these firearms if public safety is the notion is beyond me.

I agree for the most part , I personally think that the longarm category system should be rolled into one , but we should keep the vetting system part of the licensing system. Go back to pre-1996 category ownership , but screen out the dickheads , mentally unstable and criminals. Have something like a probationary period , if you can responsibly own Category A / Category A&B for 3 to 5 years with out committing a crime you can choose to apply for Category C/D longarms for a nominal fee. Just an idea.
@tgillies101
@tgillies101 9 жыл бұрын
Dan Ratte Or just make it the same as owning a Category H handgun, minimum competition participation, must be part of a club, must hold Category A/B for 1 year then take a Category C/D course through an independent RTO then you can freely own/compete with compliant/decent safe and regular club involvement. Honestly make them on the same page as handguns, do a 10 round magazine restriction if need be due to California and other U.S states having similar now it shouldn't be a problem getting compliant magazines for modern or surplus guns. Plus absolutely no offence to primary producers but I trust the competition shooter/collector who is fully involved with their firearm as a hobby, constantly investing in it, collaborating with peers, researching and generally being a "full nerd" with their involvement with it as opposed to the farmer who just doesn't quite have as passionate and intellectual investment as their firearm is more a "tool of trade".

tgillies101 The Australian Army taught me how to service & operate an F-88 Austeyr and F-89 Minimi , I'd love to have a semi-auto only Steyr AUG. I think we should adopt Switzerlands ownership , you do your service and you get the choice whether or not to pay an administration fee to have your service rifle tooled into semi-auto only and you take it home , with the provision that you can only sell it back to the government for destruction and is not transferable to non former soldiers.
@tgillies101
@tgillies101 9 жыл бұрын
Dan Ratte Yeah, you should ...... but ....... small victories. Why I make the club suggestion is because of the "controlled" nature of sport shooting. Controlled rules, controlled conditions on firing ranges, easy to document participation = indication of personal commitment and also ongoing education. But try telling ignorant politicians and/or paranoid police this. We haven't made the big leap out of colonial times quite frankly with legislation and law enforcement mentalities.

What if u r primary producer and just want to use on own property, on top of that am a volunteer euthanaser for Native Animal Network South Australia ,saving native animals but sometimes, ie roos hit by cars and are fatally wounded but joey still alive i secure the joey and euthanse mum.... have been doing that for twenty years under a primary producers category as part of a volunteer organization whom have the insurance and provide evidence of and back up my duties with police when licence is being renewed. When on public land ie road verge I call the police and get a job number they give me the authority to discharge weapon in public....... It's probably the most meaningful thing I've ever done easing animals suffering. Accurately safely and compassionately,that's my motto. Cheers oz, regards mozz, I actually will follow up with the head shooter for our organization...
