An A&P License is a requirement for working on aircraft in the United States. It's issued by the U.S. Government's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In this video I go over what you need to know about getting your A&P license. This video is mostly geared towards my Active Duty military and Veterans, but it has plenty of information in there for everyone else. If you have any questions please leave a comment. I’m 19 getting this done got 6 months left at a&p school. Man I can’t wait to finish up and get in the field. It’s a huge change coming directly out of high school and having to put my all into school as I was a slacker in high school. Soaking the information up like a sponge though since I’m so young. Hope to make my family proud.

Great video and very informative for what I was looking for. I had a question see what you recommended. I went to school for A&P finished it but never went for my FAA exams. Here we are 10 years later and I want to get back to getting the license. For someone like me that has been out of it for 10 years and need to refresh prior to taking the exams do you recommend the A&P refresher courses. Also not sure if my experience currently might get me to qualify for taking the exam even after a refresher. Again I’m still looking for more information before I pay a school for a refresher course and that didn’t help me. Thanks kindly in advance for your time and feedback.

@BurnoutsAndRotorblades

The FARs are a bit ambiguous (ecfr.io/Title-14/Section-65.77) on the experience requirements. However, it would be a good idea to look over the powerplant handbook here for a general idea (www.faa.gov/mechanics/become/test_requirements/). Each FSDO has their own requirements, so call your local one and ask if they have a list that they want to see before signing off your 8610-2. Some are there to help, some think they are the gatekeepers to the A&P mechanic universe. I also talk about the differences between FSDOs in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9yKiqp6l8m7cmg.html

Question: I was Comm/Nav previously (Now 2A2 I believe? Used to be 2A5), but crosstrained to a Flight Engineer; When they talk about experience recency, I'm assuming that means for the specific AFSC? Though I probably actually know more now than I did as a dirtbag A1C/SrA after 10 years flying and more than 3000 hours lol. Problem is I don't know what I have for documentation anymore, as they switched from 623's to TBA right before I cross trained. Wondering if I might be able to get with our maintenance guys and get signed off on some tasks.

If i have my CCAF in aviation mx, would i meet the requirements for the collegiate A&P? would i be applying for collegiate over vocational? want to get my A&P this year. very helpful video, man thanks so much.
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 4 жыл бұрын
That's not how it works. The Collegiate versus vocational are both A&P vocational programs you have to attend. One is just with a "degree granting institution" (college) and one isn't. This is another situation where the CCAF doesn't do you any good. In fact, it hurts you because you can't normally use MilTA to pay for associates level classes once you have completed the CCAF, or any other associates degree. If you are an active duty maintainer, the path is to get your tickets and take the A&P prep course. If you can't get the tickets with your AFSC and TBA records, you may have to do the JSAMTCC program. I hope this all helps. Good luck, and if you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.

I have been in aviation directly for a total of 10+ years. I am a machinist, running 3&5 axis and also working in a true machine shop. Ive just turned 50 and really want my A&P License, should have long ago. I'm not ex military. Is a pell grant the only aid available for me?? It seems to me the 1st thing I should do is see what tickets I can get signed off by past employers.....? Thank you for your service and the video! Hope to hear from you! Tracy Hall
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, you'll probably do a lot better as a machinist. But if you want to go down that path, you can use the Pell Grant if you qualify. You have to find a college near you that has an A&P degree program. vocational schools usually do not have access to federal education assistance. College and vocational programs are usually 8-5 because the FAA program requirements are a minimum set of hours. They usually can't be done with a full time day-job, but programs may vary. You probably can't get tickets until you complete the program, or have 30 months experience within the proceeding 3 years. That is dependent on your previous experience. Maybe finding a job as a machinist in an aircraft production or repair capacity might be the best track to an airframe license. Working for an engine manufacturer might get you to the powerplant side of the house as well. I'm sorry to be a Debbie-downer, but the FAA makes it pretty difficult to get into the career-field unless you commit, which is hard to do without giving up on everything else. That doesn't mean there isn't a way, I can only speak from my experience. If you do find another way to make it happen, I would love to hear about it so I can pass it to the next person.

Good information by what your saying it looks like i wouldn't qualify for this. Well i do a question i hope you help with your experience and knowledge . I would like to get into the unmanned aviation ( im not talking about those small buzzing quad captors ) field i know there going to be dozen of job opening over the next few years that's going to pay very well. Beside being in the military ( i never been in the military ). i did talk to a person in Europe she saying it be pointless to get a FAA license. And each UAV helicopter are build different that would mean i need special training on each UAV. Since he doesnt know anything about the US on UAV what do you think would be best to start getting my foot int he door if you anything about this

There are a lot of UAV companies that will train you. They are typically looking for mechanic experience, and an understanding of how UAVs work. I would recommend buying a small RC airplane and starting to learn the parts and how it works. Then just scale up from there.

Hey! So I’m actually new to this career path. I’m in the process of enrolling into a school to get my a&p license. At my local community college, it is significantly cheaper than a Trade school. I was wondering if taking the community college route is a good idea? Given than they don’t offer hands on training and most employers (from what I’ve seen) require some sort of hands on experience on top of your license. What are your thoughts or suggestions? The cost is about 20,000$ difference

@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 3 жыл бұрын
Being a girl and being short has no bearing on whether you can be a mechanic. if you need proof, look up Faith @howtohelicopter on instagram. Now, being in high school. . . You have two options, military or technical school. There is a lot to know about both. If you have set on the school route, I would ask around about different experiences folks had with different schools. I'll be honest and say I don't know much about that route because my experience is all military. Because females make up a pretty small portion of overall aircraft mechanics, I would bet that other females that have gone through that process would be the best to get advice from. Don't think I'm sluffing you off though, If I had some real advice to give, or you have more questions, shoot! If i don't have an answer, I'll find someone to give you the right answer. First reach out to the girl I named above and see what advice she has to offer.

What sre some funding sources for civilians. And do airlines hire those without the licence.
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 4 жыл бұрын
Nathan Kendall I will first day, the funding sources for civilians are the same as for military, the military just ads some funding sources. So you have all the options provided by FASA, private loans, and scholarships. For vocational flight there is really nothing except private loans through programs like ATP. For degree programs, once again the funding options are as listed above but there is more available than for Vocational Flight training. Airlines are starting to look at zero-to-hero programs like exist in eurpoe. Lufthansa has one in Phoenix. Other than that, it’s a pay-to-play system. You put out close to $100k and hope to get hired at the end.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's kind of an all-or-nothing deal. The 15 year gap is also a a deal killer. You are basically looking at all the same options as someone getting into it from the beginning. An aviation maintenance school would be my first option, and if not, working in an aircraft repair station. Getting a job at an aircraft repair facility that doesn't require an A&P might be easier depending on your last 15 years of work experience. @@BurnoutsAndRotorblades oh nice! I was a KC-135 crew chief for 6 years ( Isochronal inspection for 5 and flight line for 1) and I've since cross trained to a different career field. I'm currently looking to keep my licence up to date since my switch. but before i got accepted to cross-train I had an interview with Cessna in Wichita, Ks for a ROM Technician, and they wanted to start me at 20$ an hour. I thought this was fairly low considering I have a bachelors degree, two Associates, an A&P licenses, a Ground radio operating licenses, and 5 years of inspection experience... lol but i wasn't sure what to expect. I was hoping for at least 25$ an hour. The low starting wage and the rarity of employer call backs, when i was looking for a job, prompt me to stay in the service and go a different route (cross-train).
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 4 жыл бұрын
That is a very broad question and depends completely on your experience and qualifications. The best way to answer your question is to share my experience. I made $32/hr day one of getting out after 10 years AF experience as a Jet Engine mechanic with a modest amount of GA experience and extensive experience on both the C130 and HH60. But I was hired by a company who had a lot of aging jet engines and I was a hot commodity there in Las Vegas which has the highest starting A&P wage in the country. I've since moved on and make less hourly but more annually. It was likely location and maybe a bit of timing. The company I'm with now starts new A&P's, straight out of A&P school, out at $26/hr. I know there are many like that. General aviation doesn't pay much. you are compensated better somewhere where your other assets; Airframe experience, understanding of military T.O.'s, and Security clearance come in to play.

I'm a 15D, Aircraft Powertrain mechanic active duty in the Army. All I work on are Rotor systems and Drive systems. How do I get the knowledge to pass the airframe and powerplant portion of the practical exam without going to an A&P school? Will I really learn enough by just learning from the sheet metal guys and engine guys at other shops? I'm a little afraid. I was thinking of just using my GI bill to sign up for an A&P course at a local college but you said you don't recommend that. How would I get the required 30 months experience then?
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 4 жыл бұрын
Once you have 30 months experience working on aircraft, not including training, you can try to get the local FSDO office to sign off your tickets, 8610-2. Before they will, they will take your job code, 15D, and bump it against the FAA list that shows what experience crosses over to with regard to Airframe and/or Powerplant. Working with sheetmetal and engine guys, and more importantly getting them to document your training, will help you if you don't qualify for one of the certifications, but that is all only for the tickets which are only permission to take the test. In your case I would work with crew-chiefs for experience on tasks applicable to all aircraft like brakes, wheels, tires, lights, electrical, rigging, and being taught how to remove squibs wont hurt. Once you have your tickets signed off, then you start preparing for the test.
