I was a avionics tech in the Navy for 9 years. I've been around general aviation and some other larger platforms in my spare time, I realized my experience didn't prepare me at all to work on anything but F18s. Additionally avionics doesn't qualify for the powerplant license and frankly I know basically nothing about airframe repair (composite, sheet metal, fabric and tubular steel). The only thing I could test for would be electrical so I decided it was best to go to a traditional A&P school and get a sound education. Very informative but I think honestly if you were a aircraft mechanic is the military your training is just too specialized and it would be best to go to school or find some way to get hands on training with civilian aircraft repair before you get out. Over the last several months I've applied for various apprenticeship programs or shop helper work just to get that experience and found that no one gives a crap about my F18 history, they want to know if I can work on their aircraft.

Jess they hire alot of 18s AT tech on the west coast and some on the east if youre willing to relocate, but u need your clearance to be active. I'm also tryna get my A&P, have you started your school?

This is exactly why I thought the military was useless. I was a crew chief in the air force but they limit us on how much we actually can do. When something special happens, we call someone. We can't touch it. The military probably does this so we can't get out and do it for someone else

@@adrenaline4life233 In the Navy they use to give the IT people Microsoft certifications. They found out that people would ditch after 4 years and go make bank with those certifications later. They don't do that anymore. I joined because I had no future and was stuck working minimum wage. Great experience (not to be confused with fun) and it has helped pay for my education but overall the jobs do not translate to civilian world for a reason.

@@WhallonJesse I knew there had to be a reason for it. That's partly why a lot of us felt trapped while we served. You have to better yourself and setup a plan to get out because the military skills don't really transfer anymore unless you get the schooling to go with it. It's ironic you mention IT because that's what I'm studying for right now after leaving the military

How much money do you make as an A&p?
@CompositesNG3 жыл бұрын
Depends, but it’s a lot of money depending on where you work and how much work (time at the airport) you want to do
