Brad...great channel. I use a sealer and don't worry much about wet sanding and have never had issues with water on the wood. I use very light sprays of water as well. Creates more work to do it that way but I play on the cautious side and haven't had issues. Thanks again!

One way to make sure that you’re sanding the entire surface, is to spray it with a light coat of water based spot trace. That’s from my yacht painting days. It forces you to sand everything, whether you want to or not. A rigid sponge sanding block is good too. BTW, you do excellent work!

The sand and polish is my favourite part 👀. I's nice to hear someone who knows what they're talking about. There's so much bad advice around painting and finishing in general. Watch that mic lol. I always use water. No need to make things wet enough that water is running into holes, and I hate dust everywhere (I guess I prefer mud everywhere 😂). Right edges. Paint pools on flats, so it creeps away from edges. On top of that, edges are naturally going to get a lot more pressure from sanding than distributed pressure over flat areas.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 жыл бұрын
Ya, I hear way too many people saying they have sanded through their finishes and it’s almost always on edges unfortunately.

Great job. I am super shocked at incredible this came out. Especially being from a spray can of paint. The unfortunate part is most of us don't have a compressor and paint booth to do clear or even paint. Dust particles are a serious pain.

Hi Brad, I know you read your messages and you don't have to respond but I wanted to say to you THANK YOU ! 2k is the best clear ever for amateur painters, The results on my bass were awesome and didn't even polished it, I left it as is and it perfect(near perfect but Budget wise it wise perfect). I follow every steps of your video and I did my way for one step and it was a pain in the ass, I filled ash wood with Varathane floor varnish and it took me like 20 coats and in some place it wasn't filled enough. But the last step is the best, and that product is a kick ass product(you should have some cash reward) from spray max. All in all, I did a pro job for around 175 $ canadian. If any viewers have questions you can ask me too lol, I've watch all videos and I still have my sheets that I handwrote for number of coats and drying times for each steps(sealing-priming-painting-Clearing). You are a fucking cool guy to share your knowledge for free on youtube !!! thanks

This video has put me off the idea of spraying my own guitar, and I now have a better appreciation for why finished bodies cost what they do. I could handle the spraying well enough I think, but the sanding and polishing looks hard, and seems to require way more equipment that I am prepared to buy. Impressive finish though and I love that colour!
@BradAngove

That’s fair Paul. There are certainly easier finishes to do, but these thick gloss finishes can be challenging and require some equipment.

In my experience I do not ever need to go more than 1200 grit (unless it is a tiny scratch i go 4000 wet) and then use a polisher (machine) with a compound. Yes It may take me one more minute or so more but it is more controllable.

Brad can you try using a hobby shop paint like Vallejo, Reaper, Games Workshop, Warpaints, Tamiaya or one of severl dozen brands. Then just clear coat with Shellac?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
Shellac works with pretty much everything. The only issue is it isn’t very durable. It’s more commonly used as a sealer for wood rather than a clear over some other finish.

@@BradAngove so If I use my hobby paints out for my airbrush, what do you recommend? Sanding sealer, shellac, paint then lacquer?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
Shellac can act as your sealer. Then you can use your hobby paints and then clear coat. The clear coat will depend on the paint. Most of them are likely acrylic, so a lacquer over them will generally work fine.

beautiful! I am currently looking into refinishing my bass and changing the color on it. Would I have to sand it down all the way down to the wood before painting it?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
No, you would generally just sand it lightly with 600 grit to remove the glossy, clean it, and go from there.

Hello Brad. The polisher that you are actually using in this video is air powered. Could you share the model. I find my air powder sander doesn't turn enough as it's random orbit and hangs up. I ended up using my Milwaukee drill with the polishing head on and it worked fine but I'd like to invest in something for the compressor.

I think it’s a proto, but I sometimes use my dynabrade sander turned all the way up. If you’ve got a setup where you can use both hands porter and cable makes a nice electric one too. I have a few options in the amazon link in the description.

Thanks for the video. If you're going to use a gun, then what is the reason for using the rattle can for the color coat? Legit asking.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 жыл бұрын
I’m mostly demonstrating here that a 2K clear over duplicolor works well. You can use rattle cans for both, or a gun for both. It makes very little difference.

Hey Brad I know this is an old video but I noticed on your other painting with duplicolor videos you sanded the final coat of primer with 400 grit. Did you sand this one’s primer and paint? Love your videos, thanks!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 7 ай бұрын
I sanded the primer on this one I believe, but not the paint because it’s metallic. You could add an acrylic lacquer mid-coat clear and then sand that before the 2K.

do you have any videos over you clearcoating over a vinyl graphic on a guitar?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 4 ай бұрын
Not specifically. I suggest using a bit of adhesion promoter first to help it stick. Then it’s just a matter of building up enough clear (I have a video on building up a thick clear coat).

Brad, do you use the wax and grease remover on the body after buffing with 1200, 2500, and 4000 before moving on to polishing?
@BradAngove

I do. Just to make sure there are no contaminants to mess with the polishing.

Hey Brad - fan from UK here - I’m following your guides intently. Just one question. My guitar has binding and I have sprayed the metallic colour coat over without masking. I would like your advice on whether to seal the glitter particles in with a very light coat of 2k before scraping? So as to not disturb them when scraping. Very much appreciated & take care.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 4 жыл бұрын
No, you should carefully do the scraping work on the binding before you move forward with the clear coat. Are the particles loose?

Brad Angove Thanks Brad. I did exactly that. Just done a light mist coat on the front and sides as some sparkle was lost during the scraping. Next up 2k clear. What’s the best way to share a picture with you at the end?

Hi Brad, I’ve done a stain on the back and sides and a crackle finish on the front of my guitar body and was wondering wether I should use the same 2k clear coat all over the guitar or something different on the stained area ? The guy at the hardware store recommended a product by British paints called timber protect quick dry clear over the stain but I’m not sure if I should use a different product on the back to the front ?? Thanks mate 👍🏼👍🏼 keep up the awesome vids Sorry forgot to mention the crackle is duplicolor with Montana crackle

I think it’s red and white, but I’m not sure. I don’t use those because I don’t have an appropriate buffer that runs at appropriate speeds.

It depends on how hard the clear coat is. I’ve certainly done it; it can just take longer with hard clear coats.

I’ve struggled a lot with when to move to the next higher grit sandpaper. A number of times I’ve gotten up to 2000 or 2500 and I find that I cant remove some of the previous scratches. Do you have any tips on that?
@BradAngove

Try switching to sanding in a single direction at those higher grits so that it’s easier to see what impact you’re having on the prior scratches.
