i have 3a hair and my routine is very similar to this and it works perfectly for me. goes to show that paying attention to your porosity, density, and protein moisture balance is way more important than the curl type.

My hair is exactly like yours, at least in curl size and shape. I really have to finger coil or twist using a brush in order to get a proper curl, but most days I just scrunch and let the loose waves do what they want to do. I'm usually happy with the results, mainly because I've learned not to covet the very defined spirals others have.

Hey, Tabitha, your hair looks great. I was experiencing lots of trouble getting my waves and curls to clump up, and I no longer struggle as much and just wanted to share what dramatically helped me. First of all, the Shea moisture yogurt mask is a very intense protein mask (it sent my hair into protein overload after only using it 2 times, 1 month apart), which can cause your hair to be dry. Hair that isn’t hydrated fully is the main culprit behind having trouble forming clumps, that’s why our hair clumps better when it’s wet (hydration comes from water). I stopped using that mask and bought one without any protein whatsoever and swapped out my gels and mousses (which tend to be drying) for custards, or at least gels containing oils and other hydrating ingredients. I saw a drastic difference not too long after making these changes. Now my hair is much more hydrated and it wants to clump up when it’s wet and I also don’t struggle with it tangling when moving my head around when wet. Just wanted to suggest that you consider swapping out the mask for a few wash days and see if it helps. Thanks for your videos!

This is exactly the routine that I do. Tip for the back: when you are brushing your hair turn your head to the side, separate the back hair and brush it through while you are turned to the side. Then do exactly the same on the other side. When scrunching your hair also scrunch from the sides. But besides that I do all exactly the same for curl like waves.

I’ve been following you for a while, but always had longer hair, now I’ve cut my hair short(ish) for the first time since starting wearing them wavy, and I’ve been struggling to figure out how to shape them, I’m surprised how differently they behave even after cutting just 15cm! So this video is very helpful!

This is something that Tabitha briefly mentioned in the video, but I have real trouble taming my hair after washing upside down. It all wants to stay on top of my head in one giant clump and gets all tangled and messed up in the process of parting my hair and turning it the right way up again. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm just starting out.

Her hair looks gorgeous. Idk if anyone else has 2b/2c fine texture medium density hair like mine but getting clumps is difficult when the individual strands are so thin. If I can get a good cast and shape I'm happy but there's not much to do with naturally 80's style waves except tame them or straighten them which is murder on your hair.

My hair is not damaged at all. No color. The fineness is in my genetics. Since birth I have had baby fine hair that is unmanageable due to it's softness. I have tried bond repair, but I really don't need them since my hair is not damaged and when I have used them, I don't like what they do to my hair. My hair likes a small amount of protein, which I get in my conditioner and styling product.

Idk I feel like giving up this process and just straighten my hair out. I get tired and frustrated. I just want to get my hair to look good. This looks like my hair... in the front. My hair in the back is barely wavy. Some days I find this frustrating, other days I embrace it because it looks like I purposely curled the hair that frames my face. My son got the opposite of my hair. His hair is practically straight on top but he had 3a curls underneath and at the back (his hair is almost shoulder length) his curls also clump with no product and make shiny blonde ringlets, and he doesn’t care. Meanwhile I work at getting my 2a waves to clump.

Your hairs so pretty, and this is very helpful. Do you think silicone free conditioner works better for curl clumping? I like silicone conditioner for frizz control and to straighten my hair, but not sure if it’s good for when I want to go wavy/curly.
@tabithagingerich

Thank you! I think it depends on how much you use it. Silicone build up can weigh your hair down but if you’re clarifying and just using it sometimes I don’t think it will affect your clumps! But I often use silicone free products and feel like my curls are healthier when I don’t use it quite as often 😊 but sometimes I also use products with silicone if my hair really likes it!
