One thing that can put gardeners off sowing seeds directly is sporadic germination, however there are some simple principles that can be followed to reduce this from happening and start to achieve consistent & great results from direct sowing. This video walks you through, step-by-step, the method I use to sow seeds directly and I really hope you find it useful.

I use large cabbage leaves for my direct sow cover. Prune off the large, outer leaves, fold them along the spine and lay on top. After a couple hours the leaves wilt to form-fit the soil surface. They are robust enough to stay intact until the germination has started. And keeps the soil humidity in check.

Having watched James's video, the change in success for carrots alone was insane, I have always bought the seedlings so it was a big change. But we choose to use cardboard. Easier to move around, you can throw it in the compost when done. Having 4 kids means always having cardboard on hand. Oh and the best bit. For the 3-year-old. Much easier for them to manage. I can get her to check the plants and it is just easier than the wood. Wood or cardboard it all works just as well.

Gardening years ago across town at the home where my former hubby grew up, I was always tickled when preparing a bed tuned up a first nation arrowhead, or a more recent bit of blue and white China. I've also turned up glass pill or portion bottles ... My father in law and brother in law would walk in the field nearby after it rained, and collect a handful of points - the area is now filled with lots of houses, on the way to my grandkids' grade school. @@randyman8984 it stop the ground drying out so much by preventing evaporation in that area. I check it every few of days. One day a few have germinated and all seem fine. Even a raked bed is not level and even, there’s plenty of room for seedlings. At that point I pick the glass up, lay sticks stones parallel with the drills and put the glass on them. This gives more room for the seedlings to grow while the rest germinate. Has worked for carrots, parsnips and radish for me so far (everything I’ve tried).

We lived in Golden Bay (top of the South) for 2.5 years and had vege stalls where people from the community who were growing organically and had extra could trade or sell their excess fruits and veggies. You seem to be reading everyone's mind with what to explore next. Can you go over how to stop some of the more annoying leaf jumpers and so on? I'm on Maui and it's getting CRAZY with these little buggars! Also, I sincerely hope you're doing this as your JOB. You're entertaining and so knowledgeable and humble. I believe that I have an over population of earwigs as I have a ton of organic materials breaking down all over. Wood chip paths, woody compost and whatever has been chopped n dropped. They have been like little lawn mowers for all the direct sowed seed I've put down this season. Bird feeders are up so the birds are coming back around and hopefully they'll put a dent in the earwigs like they did for me last season.

The plank trick can also prevent birds or critters from scratching the ground around the seeds. I recently started placing a few cm of hay on top of most of my seeds to keep moisture as we had a quite dry Spring here in France and nothing was growing. I can already see that it works for radishes. But I also needed to put a net on top because blackbirds love scratching in the hay. I will definitely try it with a plank.

Eventually, you don't need to sow seeds. Just allow your vegetables to self-seed. You will have some volunteers coming out every year. I get a lot of lettuce and daikon volunteers every year. Direct sowing works best for biennial plants, like kale. Kale may not germinate early so the first year crop may be smaller. But if you let them overwinter, they will grow very strong the second year. You don't just eat the leaves; you can eat the young shoots in the second year.

Great content again, Huw! Thank you so much! 💚 One question (I am pretty new to gardening) : it seems like there are vegetables suited to direct sowing (like carrots) and other plants you prefer still growing them in modules. What is the reasoning behind this? Is there a list to help me to know, when direct sowing might work and when I better should sow in modules? (Sorry for my English.. I hope you understand what I mean..). Greetings from Switzerland

Most plants you'd start in modules are the ones that require a long growing season (tomatoes, peppers, etc.) Or ones that tend to have pest issues whilst they are young. There are some root vegetables like carrots that tend get a bit bent out of shape when transplanted
