I don’t know why I didn’t see the reply before, but “How I dial in the Sheraton”? I’m afraid I don’t quite understand the question. What I can say is I use every standard humbucker pickup position as well as every single coil option depending on moment/song. Out of all positions, I like the single coil bridge sound soloed, the least, but it is very useable and sounds good. One position has to be the least favorite, and that happens to be the one.

Lindy Fralin out of Virginia, has EXCELLENT humbuckers called Unbuckers which are perfect for coil splitting. Slightly uneven wound, so when you split the humbucker into single coil, you get more output than just “half” the traditional humbucker. Not nearly the volume drop off, and very usable single coil even if they’re not quite as toneful in that mode as true single coils. I have these pickups in two great guitars. One Sheraton and a Gibson Les Paul. I’ve had them for years. I stand by them. And btw, their full humbucker sound is lovely, and as you would expect in a low-wind, lower DCR, PAF-style humbucker. Please check them out!

Great video, Jack. Another thing I've found that works wonders for a Sheraton "jazz tone" is to put Chrome lights on it. I'm not generally a fan of flat wound strings but they get the job done. Also... you're right that rolling off the tone on the guitar tends to muddy the waters... best to do that on the amp first and then maybe on the guitar a bit if it's not enough. Cheers

I had a 1998 Sheraton, I liked it but the gold hardware became tarnished. After seeing the Pro 2 model and playing one, I updated to the Sheraton 2 Pro & very much like it. The neck is thicker & rounder, which I appreciate. Mine is fairly heavy at 9.5 lbs. The Sheratons are nice guitars.

Thanks for sharing! I play a sheraton 2 pro through a blues deluxe reissue.... for clean tones I have the volume around 4 or 5, little reverb 3 or 4.... other eg at 5.... on the drive channel I turn the bass up a little too .... kids say I shake the 2nd floor when playing rhythm. Mostly I shoot for BB King and John Lee Hooker tones.... on the drive.... well it's not really gainy... more a little dirty I guess- works for Sweet Home Chicago and sort of works for SRV- doesn't have his bite though. I agree with you about splitting coils, its better than nothing but a tele or strat is on the list, hopefully with texas specials. I also play through an orange micro dark... but only when am in a black sabbath mood... thought about selling that amp or trading it for a pedal...

Great playing! Great tones! I have the exact same model (I got it on the cheap, from a guy who was closing his music shop), but I can't really dial in the tones I'm after. I play mainly clean tones (jazz, funk, and mildly overdriven blues). My main amp is a Hughes & Kettner Stateman, and I also use amp simulations (Mustang Fender, Line 6 Pod HD and a Valeton I got for half the price). My main criticism is that the stock pickups generate harsh and unpleasant harmonics if I dial everything at 10. But the tone gets muddy and ill-defined if I dial the volume back, even just a little. I've noticed the shrill harmonics issue on other Epiphone models, such as the Joe Pass, which is why I didn't buy one when I was looking for a jazz box. I mostly use the neck pickup, I really don't like the bridge pickup. Another thing: the pickups are not balanced: the bridge pickup is a lot weaker than the neck pickup. As a consequence, I find myself constantly raising or lowering the height of each pickup in order to get a better balance between both pickups, and messing around with the pots a lot, while I should really be playing. As for rock or hard rock tones (I don't do chug-chug), all I get are shrill and ill-defined tones, not the creamy overdriven goodness I'm looking for. Maybe my amp is not the best platform for overdriven tones. Or maybe I got sub-standards pickups. Most probably, my technique sucks. I am now contemplating swapping the stock pickups for Wilkinsons. But I'll maybe give the stock pickups another chance after watching your videos :) One last thing: at least on my guitar, the neck is heavier than the body so it tends to sag whenever I play at gigs.

Jack, I always enjoy your videos. In this video, as in all your videos, when you talk about a certain setting, I can tell that what you are playing is in fact you actually exploring that setting...you're not just playing riffs but expanding on what you are hearing/sensing from the tone produced, via chords and fills. You the player hear it (as do we the viewer) then you go some more so we mutually explore the idea. Nice! I have a 1999 Epi Sheraton II, btw. Only within the past few weeks have I taken it out of its case and started giving it the attention it deserves. With amp eq around noon, an keeping guitar knobs where they need to be I can nail Johnny B. Goode.

One thing most people don't refer to, when talking about sheratons they actually have built in coil-split. Which means that the humbuckers can be Split Up into one single coil Pick up each. You can achieve this by pulling the volume knobs. (It will make the sound clearer but it might bring a bit of hum and the Output will be lower) This will make this sooo much more versitile than most guitars i played before!

@@JackFossett Given the more robust market for used Sheraton compared to the G&L models, that's a likely outcome. And since I don't really want a huge collection, the versatility of the guitars I might have swings a lot of weight in the decision. Your Sheraton videos suggest it can fill a lot of roles, although I suspect you could make just about anything sound good. All assuming I keep practicing enough to become at least competent. Hey Jack, I'm thinking of putting some HB-sized Gibson p90s in my Sheraton. Any thoughts on that? I think it will take out some of the muddiness in the tone. It's a Pro II so it should have very good stock wiring and hardware. The Pro Buckers are good pickups, but I've a feeling it will take the p90 bite great
@waltjames407
@waltjames407 2 жыл бұрын
I've got Duncan Phat Cats in mine. They're marketed as a HB sized P90, but they're not quite a P90 sound. I love the sound, but it might not be for everyone, as it is very clear and transparent and almost lo-fi compared to a humbucker sound. Bridge pickup is VERY bright, but I like it. I never had any muddiness issues with my Sheraton II, but I took the original pickups out of it as soon as I got it and replaced them with Carvin M22's (was a Carvin fanboy for a little while), which were in it up until about 5 years ago when I put the Phat Cats in it.

One reason is that a Sheraton/Sheraton II is nearly all maple (maple ply body, five-piece maple/walnut neck) while a Dot or 335 Pro will have a predominantly maple body coupled with a mahogany neck.

@JackFossett
@JackFossett 3 жыл бұрын
I imagine they're basic knobs -- but first, check to see if there's a small hex nut that tightens it to the pot. If not check under the knob to see if any of the plastic is broken or chipped -- if not that too, does it have split shaft pots? If it does, you may need to (VERY GENTLY) wedge a flathead screwdriver in between the split shaft and try to slightly push them apart to increase the tension and have a snugger fit. But like I said, VERY gently, because you can snap one of the split shaft pieces off. Been there.
