I LOVE the smell of those old books! I have 4 old MOTOR manuals included with my SUN 1120 engine analyzer! It also came with SUN SERVICE SPECIFICATIONS all US makes 66-80. And yes a wealth of good info!

Me too Doug, me too! and I much prefer the old used ones with grease and dirt on them. Those are the ones you know have handwritten notes in them... lol. The KZfaq before the KZfaq.... .lol.

I have been telling people this for years about the intake heat and nobody believes me because of people telling them to weld it shut. I learned this over 20 years ago from trial and error actually building cars not just talking about it. If you can’t drive the car any day of the year it’s not correctly built in my book. If you take that heat away from an in-line 6 drivability is shot below 50 degrees. New sub right here. Preach it Brother

Thanks Snizzy! yeah me too man. My dad gets so frustrated when he watches those videos, because it was what he had to correct & deal with being in business all those years. People hear those stories about improved HP for the racetrack, but don't realize the consequences that it does on the street.... lol.

@@BareRoseGarage I think the Y block swap is a really cool project. It’s something different not the same ole stuff. I have been watching your Y block videos. The intake ports in the head look really cool and I think your right about Fords thinking on the layout. I worked at the Ford dealership for almost 20 years. The old timers would tell me that once you fixed the oiling problems on a Y block they never gave anymore trouble.

Nice video! I remember a lot of folks would unhook the damper, then it would rust/freeze shut, then they just cut em off or throw on headers.
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
Thanks Freedom1, yeah I've heard so many people complain about that dampener and cuss the engineers for it..... but then they leave the thermal spring auto-choke on it after putting headers on and wonder why the choke is so slow to open.... lol. But that's why I like this stuff. If you change something, you have to stop and think of all the stuff it will effect by doing it.

Excellent video brother! Very solid advice. Love the old Motor Manuals. I have a few myself. I've always said if you think you have carburetor problems, look under the distributor cap! Ignition timing and ignition quality plays a big role in performance and economy too. Most stock "SMOG era" ignition curves were pretty lazy and wasted a lot of fuel. 🏁

Thanks Tony! yeah, part 2 is actually on just that! Good lord, I can't count how many times people have bought new carbs, thinking the old one is junk! They put the new carb on and it still won't run right. So they buy the "Tuning Kit" and start playing with the Jets, metering rods, springs, etc etc etc making it worse and worse..... only to find out the vacuum advance line was hooked up to the ported side instead of the manifold side...... or it was worn out and wasn't working at all. My stepfather went through 3 carbs, cussing Q-Jets every time doing just that. I dropped in a good used distributor I had and BANG! it ran like brand new. No matter how many times I tell him I didn't do anything special to that old Q-Jet I had laying around, he still says I "Really know my way around a Q-Jet". (and I still have that Holley I took off there)

I left the exhaust crossover unblocked on the 390 I built for my 64 galaxie, it never did have a heat riser, it still had the OEM exhaust on it when I bought it. I noticed even without the heat riser on a 30 degree day within 2 minutes the whole 75 pound cast iron FE intake is almost hot to the touch. So, in some cases even if the heat riser is nonexistent having the crossover not blocked off also still works pretty well. I agree with you on the electric chokes, aftermarket electric chokes that is. I hated how they worked until I discovered the 7 volt Motorcraft choke thermostat caps that came on the Motorcraft/Holley 4180 carburetors. Those mimic a hot air or divorced choke actuation very closely, hooks to the stator terminal on the alternator so they won't get any power until the engine starts. Unlike that universal key on 12 volt choke opening before you start it BS like all the aftermarket carbs come with. Gets even more shitty when it gets 14-15 volts and they really start getting wonky and hard to adjust. I found the 12 volt caps also came back on after shutting the engine off way sooner than ever needed despite the tension adjustment. The Motorcraft caps have a lot more windings on the spring and they retain the heat a lot longer and keeps the choke off longer after shutting it down like a hot air choke would.

Oh yeah, the FE's are a bit different for sure, and I think that is why they have about the smallest crossovers I've seen on a V8 (they are tiny almost slits). I think it has to do with them being Cast Iron and being half the Head.... they pick up a lot of engine heat really quick that way. Also they have that "Valley Pan" under there to actually help "cool" the oil in the valley because of it. But with them.... I've noticed they take a bit longer to "warm up" than others (esp in sub-zero weather)... but once they come up, they are good to go.

@@BareRoseGarage I noticed both the 390 I have and the 445 stroker with the Edelbrock heads and intake with no crossovers at all both of those engines warm up really fast compared to the 351W in my truck. That thing takes twice as long to open the thermostat as either of the FE's do. My dad complained of the same thing with his old Y blocks, it was like trying to warm the dead up out of their graves in the wintertime. I have Edelbrock heads with a Weiand stealth intake on my 351W, those heads do not have an exhaust crossover either like the original OEM heads did but I find the aluminum is much more forgiving for warming up and running correctly in the winter than the cast iron was.

thanks man i never knew about that exhaust damper i always unhooked them because of Horse power lol maybe thats why i never could get more than about 15mpg out of my slant 6's thank you for the insight ill keep that in mind with my next slant 6 truck i get cause im going to get another slant 6 4spd short wheel base dodge truck to daily drive this year

You bet Travis! Yeah this is one of those things that works GREAT for racing, and it tried and trued there.... but on the street doing normal run around boring stuff... it needs all that goofy stuff... lol. Everyone LOVES efi, because with efi it's doing all this stuff automatically & with electronics and sensors.... that's why a Carburetor always beats F.I. in a closed environment on Power, but F.I. beats a carburetor in ease of driving.

Hi barerose..just watch u and John Wilbur. Inspiring. I will sub u tonight. Thinking of doing a channel myself. May I ask if having 2000 subs creates a paycheck for you and if you think 2000 subs is sufficient to justify all the work necessary to get and maintain 2000 subs. I know nothing about algorithm
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
Hello there Michael good to see ya and thanks for joining us on that Live! The Sub count.... actually, it has very very little to do with anything after you get 1,000 and nothing to do with amount of money you make doing this stuff. It's just one of the requirements in order to qualify to share in the profits KZfaq makes on the ads they sell and run on your videos. For example, if Ford pays KZfaq $1 to run a Ford Mustang commercial on one of your videos, KZfaq pays the content creator of that video 55% (the bigger share) of that or $0.55 for every time someone watches that ad. If they "skip" the commercial, it's cut in half. Also, it all depends on how much money those company's are paying KZfaq (it goes up and down, all over the place). So the more people that watch the commercials, the more money the creator of that video, makes.... if that makes sense? Of course, the more subs you have, the chances of getting more "watch time" on those ads goes up, but really that is only way that sub counts effects the "money pay out" part of all this.
