Learn how to increase your flexibility in any stretch using these 2 neurological reflexes that are designed to protect your body in nature, but can be manipulated to increase your flexibility almost instantly when compared to passive stretching.
Reciprocal Inhibition
- Contraction of Muscles on one side of the joint causes reflexive relaxation of the muscle on the opposite side. THink bicep vs tricep or quads vs hamstrings.
- Your body doesn't want to contract both at the same time so it triggers relaxation of the lengthening muscle allow you to go deeper into a stretch and increase your flexibility.
Autogenic / Golgi Tendon Reflex.
- Golgi tendon organs sit near the end of a joint. When too much pressure is sensed it triggers relaxation of the working muscle in order to avoid self-inflicted damage from over contraction or excess tension. When applied to stretching, this too helps to allow you to get more flexible and deeper into your stretches.
Learn how to combine these two reflexes to improve your flexibility in any stretch.

Hey Radoslav, I'm sorry for my ignorance but I thought that by pulling yourself forward you are actually *stretching* your hamstring - not relaxing it?

No worries, I’m sure other people are asking the same question or maybe I didn’t say it properly during the video. By pulling yourself forwards (engaging the quads, triggering reciprocal inhibition), you are stretching and reflexively relaxing your hamstring. When we switch to the autogenic/Golgi tendon reflex, you are trying to contract your hamstring (no relaxing) with the intention behind it being to bend the knee (doesn’t necessarily have to end up bending). Hope that clears things up
