Knowing how to get motivated is really important.
How to stay motivated is even more important.
There are tons of videos teaching tips and tricks and rah rah motivation, but in this video I’m going to teach you how your brain works so you understand the principle behind how to get motivated and how to stay motivated. You’re going to learn how dopamine, the neurotransmitter of reward and motivation, works in your brain, and four simple things you can do to get motivated and stay that way.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

If you feel overwhelmed by a to do list, reverse it! Some days my to do list is daunting and I just ditch it completely, start a small task and write it down when I’m done. Even small things like taking my vitamins. Instead of crossing off something, you can see what you have accomplished! Mrs Hinch calls it the Tadaa list :)

That's brilliant, and I'm glad you shared it on this very worthy channel! The name "Tadaa" makes all the difference. I had thought of doing such a list before, but having this name for it envisions a trumpet blast and a hand flourish, in a magician's hat, white gloves and tuxedo. I'm not a big fan of magic, but I'm a big fan of this idea! Thanks again!

Guilty of “waiting to become motivated” to begin my tasks, which is repeating my anxiety cycles. Didn’t realize this. Today, I pushed myself to do my tasks then I became motivated to do more. It WORKED. I had a really productive day.

Summary of the video in six points - how to stay motivated: 1. Action doesn't follow motivation; motivation follows action. Want to do that one thing? Don't wait for motivation. Just go do it! 2. Take a moment to write down your values. Remind yourself what the purpose of your life may be. That can drive you to do things. 3. Track your accomplishments. Create a way to keep track of what you've achieved so you always remember that you're accomplishing tasks. 4. Reward yourself before a task. E.g., thinking how good you'll feel once a task is over is one way of rewarding yourself before a task. 5. Don't reward yourself for bad behaviour. If you're procrastinating and start doing something fun instead of doing what you're supposed to, you're rewarding yourself for bad behaviour. Use boredom as a motivator if you must. 6. Stop beating yourself up. It's bad for you in the short and long term. Bonus: when you've achieved a task, regardless of how small it may be, celebrate it. Give yourself credit. Release the dopamine to let your mind know "this was good! Let's do more."

“The more you do, the more you are motivated.” This shook me. I’ve lost a lot of motivation, and this is what I needed to hear. I’m gonna also take some other tips here like marking the stupid little boxes in a tracker, and imagine how I feel once I reach my goals. It sounds so silly, but I do genuinely feel good when I complete the tasks I’ve put off for a bit.

Making supper, esp. a bigger supper used to be a daunting task that I would put off until I was starved, or just pick instead and not eat a decent meal. I had a friend who did a genius thing that helped so much. She would slowly get her utensils and ingredients out. Then she'd start cutting or prepping things. When the cooking part came, it was a lot less to do than starting it all from scratch. I've done it every since.

My mother's advice when I was 10 years old in 1963: "if you have to do something, learn to enjoy it." Learning to find joy in everything you do motivates you to move on to the next task. I love calisthenics, exercising 3 hours a day, sometimes only an hour, and when I start sometimes I'm too exhausted to continue. But after a few short exercises, dopamine kicks in and motivates me to do even more. Dopamine also kicks in when I see people who smoke, drink in excess, exhibit road rage, and give myself a pat on the back for not having any self-destructive vices (intrinsic Rewards).

My business coach does a "Brain Dump" every day first thing when she gets to her office. Dumps everything out on the paper. Absolutely everything, even if it has nothing to do with work. Then she gets a coffee, takes a few minutes, then goes through that list and picks out only the things that are most important as the days' "to do list'. After she gets even some of it done she takes another break, rewards herself somehow, and begins again. She said she feels great all day and rarely feels overwhelmed. Especially if she gets the things she doesn't like doing done first. Then the rest of the day is a bonus. I like it.

You just helped me realize I use fear to motivate myself to do well in school. I was actually raised in a fearful manner where I was exposed to lots of parental threats and emotional abuse to where I basically didn't say anything and hid a lot of my problems and stress. It's like I'm reconstructing that for myself now. Thanks for this, it really helped me take a step in understanding myself today. Now to apply my new understanding: the fun part. 🙂

Wow, you saying that made me realize that I also used fear to ensure I was successful in what I valued. Now I have to rewire my brain to gain motivation without a negative driving force

That has been my own experience too, I have lost my life to rubbish and wish I had listened to my disturbed mother who happened to be right about most psychologists etc.Why does no-one do like memma and others online? I think they withhold us knowledge in order to keeo us coming and giving out a lot of money for years. They don't want us to get well as quickly as we could, confirmed also by former therapist Daniel Mackler (Has a YT video on why he stopped being one, it helps at least lifting the fear that it was my fault not egtting help.)Do the 12 steps programs instead?

Thank you for posting this video. I never noticed that my upbringing destroyed any motivation in me by believiing that if I failed it was all my fault, but if I succeeded it was because someone, or something else was the reason for me achieving it. Summarizing it like that can be a little problematic too though. As someone who has struggled with motivation, that type of optimism and decisiveness always put me off. Like I didn't even want to think about the concept of motivation, or the relationship between reward and motivation. For people who don't want to think about it, thinking about having a vision, or formulating a plan can be overwhelming. That level of optimism to a pessimist is scary 😅 Like the tl:dr vibe about it just doesn't force us to research and be educated about it

Hello Emma, I am so glad I found you! Since adolescence I have lived every day as if it were my last. What motivated me was my 6th grade teacher who I overheard telling my parents I won't do much past the 6th grade. I didn't get sad. I got mad. Now I am a very senior citizen who was a dynamic individual12 years ago. In spite of graduate degrees, knowledge of 5 languages, studying art and music, living in Europe, teaching graduates, young adults and children along with many more reinventions of myself, I am finding difficulty revisiting those accomplishments that made me happy. I write you now with anxiety, depression, and the stress that comes with caring for a loved one who is ill. Building Intrinsic Motivation 1. Take down a moment to write down your values 2. Track your accomplishments 3. Reward yourself before the task 4. Stop rewarding bad behavior 5. Stop the negative Self talk + Thank you very much Ms. Emma for this wonderful video. I find it hard to really move on from past lost and it's been quite a while that I've been stuck at the bottom of the pit, but I believe God graced us life to live for His purpose and I'm trying to embrace and stay with this truth. I don't want to pity myself for the mistakes I have done, sometimes life lessons are learned best with hard truths. I tend to be a people pleaser and most of the time I find it hard to face the truth on myself. I don't want to justify anymore my desolations and yeah, little by little, with one step at a time, I'll try and make it happen to live life courageously to be able to fully live it. Thank you so much again for your sense of mission and may God always bless you, your family and your work. May you be able to help and reach out more people from different walks of life that need to build up this good habit.

I had always been pretty motivated and good with routine but the bottom dropped out a while back and I didn’t know why I couldn’t get back up and running. Your video helped me quickly understand what is going on internally and how to adjust. I am so excited to get going now! Thank you!!!

As a university student with depression and humongous workload, I just want to say thank you so much for making all these videos. I should have found this video and this channel in general last school year. I was a mess. But, oh well, the past can’t be changed anyways. I hope I do better this upcoming semester. You’ve helped me greatly this past month. Thank you so so much!!

Oh My God!!!! Thank you so much for this video. I am a very motivated person just like your in-laws, but totally in this unmotivated state especially since I took a break with work (just before Xmas). I don’t even feel like working on my art and things that I love doing. But your explanation is a great help. Intuitively, I knew I just had to ‘get moving”. So....today is the day! Happy New Year!!!! Lets hope 2021 is a terrific year of hugs, and interaction with loved ones.

I keep watching this video over and over, and taking notes!!! ❤️ With the virus, most of my normal community activities have gone away, and I am an empty nester (husband still works). I need to create more of a new daily routine, (also to help with anxiety and low level depression) and this is WONDERFUL!!! So many amazing recommendations well organized and packed into 16 minutes! Thank you ❤️!

I can’t explain how grateful I am for you. I used to go to therapy but one day she called me and said they are pausing their practices because of Covid and when they resumed they didn’t even contact me or try to work over the phone. I trusted the therapist and I told myself I’d never go to one again. Thank you so much for spreading your knowledge. I’ve been struggling with depression, adhd and ocd for so long and when I get in a rut it’s so hard to get out. This is my longest one by far been almost 1.8 years but your video has helped me see ways in which I can increase motivation and function like I used to thank you!

Wow, I really needed this and found this so helpful: I used to be quite motivated, but this last year seemed to zap all of my Mom and life changes, then Covid-19, carwreck, etc. I am working through all of this other stuff, but am still tired and my husband is quite gifted and accomplished. I feel like I am being over corrected and am literally doing everything wrong.. which is adding to this cycle. This was very very helpful.

This is the best video on Motivation I have seen. None of the hype and all of the actionable reasoning that is really required to move someone from a place of inaction to forward and perpetuating momentum. Thank you so much for this great resource. I really appreciate the effort and thought you put into your videos.

I look forward to relearning and putting into my life your wise counsel.
