How to Get Motivated to Paint Warhammer

One of the reasons I started this channel was to help motivate myself to actually getting through projects that I fell off. It's pretty much been all Warhammer 40k so far but that wasn't the intent, but the response has certainly helped me continue doing more Warhammer, because it's a fun hobby and making videos makes it more fun.
Everyone stuggles with motivation, and I especially struggle with getting started. Momentum plays a huge role in my ability to get stuff done, so I've had to come up with some techniques or at least learn things about myself that will help me get to the point where momentum can kick in. Some of these skills I've only really been able to fully utilise since I've been diagnosed and medicated for #adhd
The next issue arises when I hit something that's slightly difficult and give up, but that's another story. Please let me know if you found any of this tips helpful, and please leave your own tips in the comments, whatever hobby it's for: Warhammer, Video Games, DnD, Art, whatever projects you're working on!

That first tip is one I often rely on. If I sit down in order just to apply one base coat or do something similarly basic, then there's a decent chance I'll stay seated at my painting desk and do a few more things. Much easier than getting going when you've created a list of goals you want to achieve and you're getting anxiety about whether you'll manage them all or not.

The last 3 models I've painted were presents for my brother. NapoleOrk and Gobleon for Christmas, and the Goff Rocker for his birthday at the start of this month. But I'm getting that momentum up again.

The momentum thing kind of reminds me of how if I stop painting/building for more than a week it is really hard for me to pick up where I left off, because I know for a fact that at this point it will be years before I completely finish my Necrons from indomitus, I got them built, painted the skorpekh and then it all went into the grey horde known as my pile of shame.
@PaulIsBadAtStuff
@PaulIsBadAtStuff Жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel that. I bounce between projects a lot because when I stop one I can't start it again, and that can sometimes block me from starting anything, so moving to something new and regaining that momentum will then get me to work on the old projects again

As a tip for anyone else who may have problems with memory, I had a mini of an army with a point value on it, and that was my goal for the army, and after a while it bothered me to finish it. But now that I am, I'll be glad to say I'll have a 1K DG army after 4 years of procrastinating, things can be done and tiny annoying things may help, all it can take is one miniature that offsets you to get you motivated. Please don't take my advice as praise, I'm just a random person commenting on a video.

I keep coming back through this one: this should be included in the second box of any miniatures you buy, and we all need to keep coming back to it. For me, sometimes the biggest thing is putting water in the mug or a new sheet of paper in the wet pallet; almost ANY motion to start you on the path is the way. Also wash your dorito hands!

To try and get some semblance of sanity back I’ve just started building and magnetising my Dark Angels combat patrol after about 2 years of leaving it on the shelf. And I started just by tidying up a space for me to build and paint, just making that space available made such a difference to crippling executive dysfunction. It’s generally a good idea to be patient with a hobby and not burn yourself out. Just assemble/paint a little here and there instead of doing it for 12 hours in the weekend, and you’ll be surprised how quick you can paint up an army. Just 20 minutes a day, before or after work or before bed will actually add up pretty quickly. Also, sick video! Your editing is great

I think of an episode of a TV show I like that I haven't seen for a while, or a podcast I enjoy that just released something new and pair it with doing a model. Sometimes I think of something at work so I'm kind of excited to do both when I get home. It usually just takes till I'm done setting up to already be in the mood.
@shadowx542

So this was me and It may sound like I'm very controlled but when I got back into the hobby 2 years ago now I have done a little hobbying every day. You set a routine up and motivation be damed. You don't think about having to get ij the mood your routine already dictates you will be doing something today. And suddenly I find myself having gone from small 20mons sessions to usually doing am hour and a half each day. You don't have to do much you can paint a boot each day but do 1 hobby thing each day soon you will find yourself slowly crunching through all your stuff. It won't be fast but It will always be forward progress. Freeing yourself of having to be motivated is quite liberating.

I've done something around accountability this year to keep me motivated. I realised towards the end of 2022 that I didn't paint nearly as much as I would have liked to have done for various reasons, so decided to start an Instagram account at the start of this year, told my Warhammer friends about it to get some followers, and wanted to commit to posting an update on what I'm working on every week. I'm not a particularly good painter, but I figured if I put that commitment out there in public, I would be holding myself accountable for making sure my friends would see what I've been working on. Working alright so far, haven't missed an update, and don't plan on doing so anytime soon.

Adding to making stuff simple to start, making a creative hobby something you can practice by doing stuff that’s not super creative is still a good way to consistently practice, since being consistently creative is hard. The biggest thing that stops me from drawing is deciding what I want to draw, so stuff like model studies makes it easier to start the process since all you need to do is draw what you see in front of you. For warhammer this could be assembling models or making bases, or practicing only one technique during a batch painting

This video has helped me today, a bit. I've basically utterly failed to make almost any progress on an army I wanted to play in a little friendly game tomorrow, two weeks ago we all agreed we'd play a 500 point game so I started putting together my list and a few days later started making my Kasrkin, had like, 7 of the 10 dudes done in an hour (built is done for me, painting it is a whole thing I'll do much later) and now, over a week later with 1 day left, I have done..... 1 more of those Kasrkin. The announcement of 10th is what's done me in, I had all my choices locked in but these previews have started making me doubt those choices, I wanna be the free and easy guy who can just make a choice and live with it but I've got that crappy little voice in my brain saying "oh but what if that weapon choice is crap in 10th and you've got a £30 unit that is just terminally bad". I've gotten alright at magnetising stuff but it's such a pain in the ass sometimes. So it's helped me at least go "well, I didn't do what I wanted to do, that's alright I guess".

For anyone struggling to paint models my advice is try painting one thing, one guy to completion. Some of us aren't born batch painters. Painting everything black on 20 guys and then everything silver etc is for people with patient crocodile brains. For those with ape brains that need instant gratification paint one guy fully. You can probably get that done in a day. Then have that finished guy you're proud of in front of you while you paint the next guy to inspire you.

I got a weird method for self accountability. I make spreadsheets with numbers and points and a relaxed time frame. My current project is 100 points of models to be painted within the year. Each regular model is a point while monster / vehicles run for more and I put a how far ahead are you cell and seeing that number jump up really is a motivation jump. Basically a "You are 94 days ahead of your goal" works wonders for me to keep the momentum going.

I understand this feeling too well. i'm currently stuck on a side project, a drawing i promise for a friend as a bonus christmas present, AND ITS ALMOST MAY AND ITS NOT DONE YET Once i start, i can get the motivation going and work on it for a bit, like a week, but then there is any kind of minor things that prevent me from working ONE DAY, and its over for weeks. Impossible to get back on it. I have plenty of times. I could physically do it. But i mentally can not even start. When i'm working on it i enjoy it, that's not a chore, but just going through the process of "ok im going to be productive today" is so rough. Often doing things for others is enough to keep me motivated, as i want to make them proud of me/not disapoint them, but on this one i wear it's a pain in the ass, and the longer i struggle, the more i feel my friend will be disapointed with the result. I almost don't want to finish it at all, wishing they forget it and i can just bury it forever. -- I swear that your "just do the smallest step ever, it's still a step" advice will help me FOR EVER man. Thanks you

Routine helps...like A LOT. Getting to that point however is not easy for everyone. Personally : MOST workdays I get up deliberatly early. Get breakfast and get a coffee going. Then I sit at my hobby-desk with paints arround me , water already there, wetpalette just everything you'd possibly need. I stare at my WIP Minis that I have on my desk and just pick a detail or a part I want to paint and I just do that then. After that maybe I do some more or I don't, doesn't matter, I did something. EVENTUALLY I get a few modells done that way or to the point where I can have a bigger varnishing session or something like that. Every day just a tiny bit.

For me, it's lists. If something is a task on a list, it annoys me to have it tacked to the wall staring at me unfinished. Extra detailed lists help even more, so for example, I have a bunch of beastmen I need to paint for an upcoming game con. I've listed each miniature individually, but I've also added columns for each thing that has to be done: built, primed, painted, based, and so on. Eventually, I end up with this long sheet of paper with a growing mass of red checkmarks that keeps me pushing to complete it.
@PaulIsBadAtStuff

To do lists are definitely a great tool! I've struggled with them myself, because I start to find them either daunting or too high level, but I know for others they're a great tool so people should try that out!

JUST DO IT works for me because I can't fool myself with filling up that cup. I know what im trying to do so its all or nothing. That cup IS the whole project. Not doing it is also good advice. When I was painting my daemon prince any time I felt I was at the point where I was pushing myself to keep going, I stopped. Ever since seeing the model I wanted it to be the best thing id ever paint and so far it is. Letting myself do it slowly let me keep my heart in it. I've painted Abaddon, for example, after the prince and while he's good, the dp is better because my heart was not in the work for aba.

This is a risky strategy but for Warhammer i find it's good to have a few projects at different stages but make sure at least one of these projects is at some basic stage that doesn't require that much thought to do and you can just worry about what video/pod you're gonna check out. For example you might have some parts off sprue that need the mould lines scraped off or maybe some near finished minis that just need the base rims painted. You don't want a bunch of projects at the start of very involved/tedious stages. At one point i had 15 minis that were all at the transfer stage and 5 more at the edge highlight stage and it was a total motivation killer. Another time i had some assault intercessors i couldn't continue to paint as i'd left off their gun arms for a particularly fiddly conversion to the bolt pistols which i hadn't started yet.

Executive dysfunction suckssssss. I had a huge momentum for starting Adepta Sororitas (left at mid 7th edition and got back in in Feb) and was getting a lot built and then I hit Repentia. I heard the jokes about the mold lines of these things... I made 1 before I was too annoyed by how heinous the lines are. The model is like 4 pieces, it should be 2 minutes to put together instead of like 10. All my motivation just went poof. I still have 10 Sisters and 5 Sacrosants to build in that box but eh. Just gotta let that simmer a bit before the urge to tackle it jumps out of nowhere and steals my lunch money. Also the fact 10th is very looming around the corner (and announced so insanely far ahead) isn't helping. That and like the last 4 editions of 40k have had no lasting power isn't helping either as well as the possibility that my army will be the next World Eaters book (ie not useful until the last 3 months of the game when it finally comes out).

Starting projects I find not too bad with big stuff. Finishing them is the tricky part. It's all about getting moving. If it's a new army box, just opening the box and getting the clippers out and just clipping something will hopefully get the momentum started.

Tips that work for me: do the easiest/most enjoyable (to you) thing rather than the thing you should be doing. I *should* finish painting my inkubus models, but that's hard and if I say I have to do that first I will do nothing. It's easier and more fun to build the kill team I just bought so I'm going to do that. Secondly I like to take a little emotional support snack to my desk with me so if something starts to get annoying or overwhelming I can have a snack break without leaving the spot - if I take a break elsewhere it could be days before I come back.

The first step is often the hardest for me, my 2 things I do is the keeping things convenient part and jumping on the motivation when I get it. There’s been times I was watching KZfaq or something at like midnight and BOOM I kinda feel like I want to paint that apothecary that’s sitting on my desk and I jump at the opportunity and take that small urge to actually doing it. Don’t give myself a chance to dwell on it and just barrel into it

These are some good tips. As someone who also works on flow and momentum, I can certainly use some of them. Specifically the first one. I get hung up alot over how much time I have to hobby, I always want to commit myself to at least 2-3 hours if I put in any meaningful time at all. But I can't always do that, so I lose momentum and a small amount of motivation each time. But the idea of doing smaller steps I think may help me out in the long run. Also, I *felt* that Mario Maker bit. Because I've been playing the Megaman Battle Network Legacy Collection, which has only distracted me *further* from my goals.

The "just to something" is something that helps in all my work. Warhammer: Just putting the paints I need on my desk is huge Housework: just sorting the mess into into piles starts my momentum Day Job: Putting in a time box on my work calendar Part Time courses: just putting a load of hyperlinks into a word document Now I'm sitting on a bunch of terrain to paint up, but I'm waiting on my partner to want to paint some of her stuff before I do, that way we are still painting together

Great video. If anyone ever has a creative block, the first step will help. Do literally anything that's relevant and it'll help. When I write, if I can't get the will to write, I literally start writing how I don't want to write and complain for a while to myself before the juices start to flow, then my mind is working on the issue and a solution usually comes. And a personal one, don't aim for perfection, aim for completion. By doing you will improve in some way, even just by practicing what you can do already.

I only learnt what executive dysfunction was this year and how it is the root of my depression. I felt a little crushed when I was told the current nhs waiting list is 3 years long and that i need to deal with it myself until then. its been my dream for years to make video essays and I've written about 40 scripts I think are really good and even done voice overs for some but I'm not able to push through the executive dysfunction and make a single one into a full video. seeing your insane channel growth despite facing similar struggles to me has been the biggest motivation I've ever felt. My ULTIMATE painting advice for anyone that has all but given up is: go to a competitive tournament. I tried to paint my beloved Imperial knight army for a full year and barely got a basecoat down. the night before the tournament I mange to paint a full 2k points because of the pressure of not being able to enter the event without a painted army.
@PaulIsBadAtStuff
@PaulIsBadAtStuff Жыл бұрын
I've been in a fortunate enough position that I could go privately, because the NHS waiting lists are insane. I know that even with these videos, I'm a lot more negative about them if I'm not on my medication (either it's worn off or I've not taken it for the day for whatever reason) so I know that, even trying to push through that to make video content, you can still feel like you can't finish it. I'd love to see one though! Remember that even though you haven't finished a video, you've certainly been getting good practice with script writing and voice overs, so it was never wasted effort. I've tried making videos/streaming for many years, this was the first idea that took off. Hopefully you'll be able to get through the NHS waiting list and get the help you need, but until then I'm rooting for you and looking forward to your first video essay!

@Paul is bad at stuff I mean it's super bare bones at the minute because I'm working on the core systems and gameplay loop to hopefully make sure it's actually fun 😅 But quick run down, sci-fi skirmish game, random initiative (like bolt action), each unit can be activated multiple times (as long as they don't repeat actions) teams of up to 10 models. Each can have a specialty (classes from other games, like sniper etc) as well as being highly customisable in terms of gear. Small maps with objective focused games so they don't have to be 1v1 (my gaming group is usually 3 people 🙄) Very easy for new gamers but deep enough for experienced players to list build the hell out of it 😊😅 I have a barebones pdf if you want to take a look 🤷‍♀️
