** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
The last Oddlyeven puzzle we did was one of the best puzzles we've ever seen (Effervescence). This one is also magnificent - introducing doublers AND triplers - all resolved with just four lines :)
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. One cell in every row, column and box is a doubler. This cell counts as double its value on the lines. Each of the digits 1 to 9 appears exactly once in a doubler cell. One cell in every row, column and box is a tripler. This cell counts as triple its value on the lines. Each of the digits 1 to 9 appears exactly once in a tripler cell. Doublers and triplers do not share cells and no doubler or tripler cell is within a king's move of any other doubler or tripler cell. Lines are Region Sum Lines: the values of the digits on each line segment within a different 3x3 box must sum to the same total (say a total of X). If a line passes through a box more than once, each line segment in that box must sum to X separately. Each blue lines may have a different value for X. Eg [the values of]
r8c1+r9c2+r9c3 = r8c4+r7c4 = r6c4+r6c5+r6c6 = r6c7+r5c7 = r5c6

29:50 I find the quicker and more natural way to run the maths here for me is rather than taking the tripled digit out and summing the rest, just take the unmodified minimum sum 21 and add two *more* copies of the digit you're trying to triple, since there's already one in there-e.g. 21 is the sum of 1-6 once each, so if you triple the 2 you need two more 2s for a total of 25

I used that technique as well *in some cases,* for both doubled and tripled digits. I wonder now, after reading your comment, whether this should be done *systematically.* 🤔 I'll try and remember to verify this next time I solve a puzzle with modifiers. Thanks for sharing this insight.

I wish instead of saying "doubler or tripler" Simon had gone with "troubler." It is both a portmanteau of those two words and plays on the puzzle's title.

That was great, thank you Oddlyeven and Simon 👍🏻👍🏻 I mean, it was tough, it took me over an hour, but the logic was beautiful all the way through, and although the troublers made it quite mathsy there wasn't much in the way of slugging through iterative calculations. So often, the logic needed wasn't massively difficult, it was just a case of working out _where_ to look, and realising that something you hadn't thought was restricted enough to be worth paying attention to is actually massively important. This afflicted Simon a few times and was definitely a problem for my solve!

When Simon makes the assumption at 21:50 that the line in box 1 has to add up to more than 21, he seems to forget that the doubler/tripler digit could still be a 1 (which, in fact, it is). So, he's kind of lucky there that it turned out to be true, since at that time I don't think it was a valid assumption.

The minimum value of the line with no doublers or triplers is 21 (1+2+3+4+5+6=21) so even if it was a doubled 1 the total is 22, which is more than the 21 a tripled seven gives, so the logic is correct here

25:24 I don’t think R5C6 can be a doubled 4 at this point: R6C456 would need to add up to 8, which is impossible because of the 4 in the box and the 5 in the row. You can’t do 1-2-5 nor 1-3-4. So R5C6 is 5.

28:49 for me. I also noticed the star battles similarity, and it was very useful. @ 15:39 - "they add up to at least 15" - You're about to kick yourself. That line has to be a multiple of 6. The doubler must be the larger digit of the two multipliers, so the maximum for the line is 18, which is also the first number greater than 15 which is divisible by 6. Therefore R3C4=9, R4C6=6. Now R5C4 can't be 9, but it also can't be 7 because there's a multiplier on the line in box 1, so it must be greater than 21. You keep looking at that 78 and only considering box 4, which isn't under pressure. It's box 1 you need to look at. Once you realise R5C4 cannot be 7, then all the goodness that flows from that follows. @ 25:00 - You're up to your old trick of stroking the cat the wrong way. You're doing things in the wrong order and making it much harder, leaving options that the correct order would remove. In box 1, the tripler cannot be anything but 1, because 1 + 3x2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 25. This means that the tripler in box 7 is at least 2, but if it is 2, the line must sum to at least 10, which makes your deliberations about the doubler in box 5 unnecessary. Now the 10 line in box 5 can only be 127, and the 18 line must therefore be 369 (which I thought was quite cute having both of the multiplier digits on it), and you have a 4 in the middle. You also have a 13 pair on the line in box 7. @ 31:16 - "Is there any digit we can knock off the line" - The line is forced. It has to have 23457 on it, meaning 689 are not on the line and all can be placed. @ 41:27 - "If this is 7..." - you're doing it again. There's a 4 in the centre, so you should have knocked 4 out of R9C5, giving you a 79 pair in the triplers, so that cell you're trying to put 7 into can only be 4. Now, R2C9 cannot be 9, so it's 7 and R9C5=9. Alternatively, you could just do sudoku. You have a 47 pair in C8. If R4C8 were 7, it would make R9C8=4, making R9C5=9 and forcing R2C9 to be a second triple 7. @ 44:10 - "How do we do this then? Not sure" - SUDOKU! You've just placed a 4 in C8, and you've a 47 at the bottom of the column. You've also got a 4 in the centre looking up at a 48 pair. You can place 1 in boxes 2 and 5, 9 in box 5, and once you spot that 3 and 4 have to go at the top of C2 (and can be placed), you can also finish off box 1. Your assessment at the end was right, it did require getting on the right path, and yes, your sudoku was as expected. I just don't understand why you were so reticent to consider box 1 at the start. That screamed out to me that it was where I needed to look, because it was a 6-cell line segment with a tripler on it. That set me off on the right path, where I didn't really need to do any hard work. You're normally pretty good at spotting the weakest areas in a puzzle, so I'm a bit baffled by how you approached this. A very nicely constructed puzzle. I don't know if the star battle logic was intended, but it was very nice to spot it.
