Here is where you can have a go at Poly by Jay Dyer: app.crackingth...
Normal sudoku rules apply. Along a line, the sum of digits on the line is the same in each region the line passes through. The sum may be different for different lines.

Thanks for the feature! The name of the puzzle is a reference to the fact that there are no single-cell sums on any of the lines. I'd noticed that quite often when I used region sum lines I ended up depending a lot on single-cell sums to force stuff, so I made this puzzle to experiment with logic that didn't need them.

This idea resulted in quite a magic construction. 100% elegant and brilliant. Challenging but never brutal. Perfect. I believe the intended logic was even easier and more magnificent than what was revealed by Mark.

I was able to do the first part, but after that I got a bit lost. Watch you till the part where I needed than I finished and comeback here. Jay Dyer usually make puzzles above my range (the one's that are in the channel) but this one I almost did it, and I am happy for that! Thanks for the solve Mark! 🤗🐧

I finished in 33:28 minutes. Jay is so brilliant at constructing these puzzles that have a simple, but elegant beauty to them. The geometry of this puzzle was amazing to uncover. I really like pairs of digits limited its line based on the limitation of only three digits able to go into a row in a single box. As always, it feels good to beat Mark's time. Great Puzzle!

Around 33:15 Mark deduced that the orange cell adds up to 14, I did the following instead: because the 9 got eliminated from r9c4, the maximum sum of r9c4 + the blue cells becomes 8 + 14 = 22, which makes green at least 23. This forces an 8 in r6c123, and just like with the 9s, the 8 in box 5 ends up in column 4 or 5, eliminating it from r9c4. r9c4 becomes a 7, and the only way to reach a total of 45 in box 8 is now by making blue 14 and green 24.

the break in becomes quite a bit easier if you ask the question where do r3c3 and r3c4 go in boxes 1 and 2 early on.

Came in just under 3 hours haha. With some breaks in between for sure. Once again region sum lines seem to be my nemesis, but I did eventually get there. My eventual path through the box 8 logic was to sum the region Mark put as bright blue plus the digit in c4r9. Since the bright blue region sums to either 13 or 14 and the extra digit was either 7 or 8, all together they sum to anywhere from 20-22. That leaves the green region in box 8 to make up the difference between that sum and 45, making it 23, 24, or 25. Of course 25 is right out, and either 24 or 23 would put an 8 in row 6 of box 4, which forces 8 into the bright blue in box 8, which makes c4r9 a 7, which locks in the sum of green at 24.

Another way to figure out the 89 pairs at the top is that red and purple can't both contain 4, cause that would force 4 into the bottom of box 3

Yes. This counts for 5,6 and 7 too. 😊 (2x 1,2,3 + 1x 4,5,6,7 = 34 -> the min & max.)

And a way to figure out, that all lines in box 1 and 2 has the same sum, is to ask where r3c4 goes in box 1, or where r3c3 goes in box 2.

Ya. As soon as the 123 triple went in, I realized the 2 quintuples couldn't share any other digit. Ergo: 12347 & 12356 are forced. Not that I got much further. Mark & Simon are a bazillion times better at this than I!

33:46 finish. I actually used a little bit of set theory on this one, rows 5 & 6 vs boxes 7 & 9. After removing the equal sums (and partway into the puzzle) I was able to establish that r9c9 had to be a high number. This let me break into box 9 in a different way from Mark (though I don't know if it was any faster). Excellent puzzle!

Yes, 100% brilliance by Jay Dyer❗ 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 His beautful logic was not entirely revealed by Mark, who (skillfully, but disappointingly) took the long way around some of it, particularly for the first beautiful deduction placing *89* pairs in boxes 1 and 2.

Initial breakin could have been this. 12345, 12346, 12356, 12347 are the only combinations possible for a five digit line mapping to a 2 digit lines. We cannot have any more common digits than 1,2 and 3 as there will be no room in box3 row3. So the only possibilities are 12356 and 12347 which both are summing up 89 pairs. I still cannot forget the amazing puzzles set in the monthly hunt by Jay Dyer many moons ago. Those were a series of exquisite puzzle much like this one.

8:50 I'm stuck after this: I notice that 12345 repeated in blocks 1 and 2, rows 1 and 2, would be forced into block 3 row 3 -- which can't happen. One can repeat at most three digits in the red-purple sections, where they would go in block 3 row 3. So the minimum of red-purple is 123 repeated and 4567 non-repeated for the ten cells. They add to 34. Therefore, the minimum of each of red and purple is 17. Block 3 row 3 is 123, the two-cell lines are both 89, and the other four cells in row 3 are 4567 each pair adding to 11. (With these conditions, use Sudoku to fill out red and purple. Don't pencilmark them.) That's where I am currently.

Help someone! When Mark figured out the red and purple in boxes 1 and 2 added up to 34 i understood the logic and method, but why that meant the light blue and yellow cells also added up to 34 is lost on me. Can someone be so kind as to explain why? Thanks! 16:30
