In this video, I chat with Erik McRitchie about how to get paid work with Big Brands! Erik has worked for brands such as Lexus Canada, Bauer, Columbia, Telus, Westjet, Glenfiddich, and many more! As creatives, photographers, videographers, car enthusiasts, or whatever you do this video is going to be incredibly helpful for anyone trying to get new work or develop relationships with new brands/clients. I want to say a HUGE thank you to Erik for allowing us to come along on his shoot for Lexus Canada. It was a blast learning from you and hanging out!

Also, it's so nice to see someone still using a DSLR in 2020 while everyone seems to be thinking mirrorless bodies will make them better photographers. The experience and bond between and its handler really matter regardless of generation. Kudos up.

This is the video that made me a new subscriber to your channel 🙌🏾! Being at a point in my photography career where I have been stuck in limbo, working just to get the next paycheck because bills are bills... And they have to be paid.😩 This really has sucked the passion and creativity out of something I once had a burning desire for! I recently decided to take a break from it all, and restructure my mindset around my brand. This video right here litteraly saved my life... From being lost to not knowing where to begin, now I can say I have an idea on where to start!😌 Erik is a great guy and with so much positive energy, thanks for bringing him in to share his experience. I am at ease now💛

This video is great and 100% accurate! I recently got to do some product photo work for an eye wear company just because they saw some work I did with there products on my Instagram page. They reached out via email asking to use my photos, and of course I said yes. But while I had his attention, I offered him a partnership opportunity. Low and behold, it paid off! He said yes and I got a bunch of free glasses and now my photos are on his website, advertisement emails, social media, etc... I didn't get paid money but it didn't matter because it was my first "client" and I got a chance to work with a real brand that I wanted to support and now my work is out in the world. It really is all about commitment and patience!

Great Video, super quality and very informative. Just did the totally wrong thing then. Went to some 6 dealers yesterday, all of which said either no or we keep you in mind. :D I do see that some dodgy guy coming in isn't the best way but honestly what I don't get is, that I only checked those who had horrible instagram accounts with really bad iphone footage and told them I would like to show them for free that I can get them better footage and they all said no thanks, we're fine. Like what low standards do these dealers have :D And I mean premium dealers like Porsche n Merc.
@TheCarCreative

Great point. I think, like what Erik said, that timing is everything. With my experience with working with dealerships, even having contracts with them it can be hard for them to find the time to even manage someone that they are already paying, let alone take the time to start with someone new. Another thing to keep in mind, Covid has been really hard for a lot of dealerships so funds aren’t flowing as freely as they may have in the past. Keep the grind up man! You never know when they’ll say yes!

Generally for cars, 35mm f 1.8 is gold, u can get a 50mm 1.8 as well, go with what works for you, but a 35 or a 50mm f1.8 is a must for me :) these are really afordable, u can even go with 1.4, or even 1.2😂 but they are more expensive

This is actually some unique advice but I’m thinking to myself how am gonna shoot brands that I want to shoot. I can’t afford a car, nobody I know has a car, it’s like it’s one problem after another. I can honestly understand why people feel like giving up on photography. Before anyone tries to give me the same solutions. Yes, I have tried Facebook to look for car groups in my area, No I couldn’t find any. I tried asking people on Instagram if I could take photos off their cars ( didn’t work) No, There aren’t any car shows around me. At the moment this so I was 18 year old is planning to get a Chinese motorcycle ($1000) because it’s super cheap and turn it into a scrambler so that I can go places and hopefully take more photos. Jamaica has tons of Chinese bikes and we have one nationally recognized motorcycle dealership and that’s Honda which is located five hours away for me.

All great tips. I would add to this, if you're just starting out, don't expect to be able to just waltz onto any property that has cool aesthetics and start shooting. Can't tell you how many times I've been on a parking garage or other cool location and within 5 minutes some half-baked rent-a-cop comes running out with their "no cameras! private property!" crap LOL. And before anyone says 'well you have to ask for permission', realize that many locations just don't anyone on their property that doesn't belong there, and often say no and you just have to walk away. Between that and the "if you see something say something" people(thanks 9/11) that get the police involved, it can be daunting to try to get out there and get some work done. Oh and if you start to shoot for commercial purposes, remember that some places require a permit.

Totally! I was curious why he choose Nikon, and it just happened to be what he started with and then continued to build out his kit with it. He can make some pretty great quality work with the tools he's got.

For now I think I am not as skilled as I should to charge money, but the problem is I can't find someone who wants to shoot his car even if it is free. Actually I have offered money, but....yea. Anyways love your channel, love your work, you are amazing thank you for the inspiration If you have read this: have an amaaaaazing day, because you deserve it

I have indeed read this brother. Definitely tricky to get started without access to cars, try doing some car spotting. Bring your camera with you when you go out and when you see a great car just take some photos wherever they're parked. Work on your editing skills and eventually you'll get an opportunity to show your stuff!

Try a car dealership. I got to shoot a local exotic car dealer when a family friend bought his a6. They were really nice and let me into a lot of cars and opened up the hoods. I even got to shoot the interior of a 2017 rolls royce ghost

I would like to find out what Erik did during those 6mths "waiting" from Lexus....

Probably the same thing with a bunch of different brands. It's not like he just waited for Lexus to respond.

Okay I’m glad you can make it big in photography for brands without having to include videography in ur business

Definitely! Doesn’t hurt to diversify though! I do know that Erik works very closely with a videographer in town and together provide even more value for the companies they work for. Something to consider =)

The Car Creative thank you, I will probably end up going down that road as well seeing as videography is a whole different ball game.

He skipped the part after they reached back out to him with them insulting him saying "Oh we like your work but you will get exposure after the shoot"(Their way of saying that's how they plan to pay him)...

A couple good notes for me to respond to this comment. 1. I haven’t met any content creator who hasn’t had to, to some degree, “pay their dues” and do work for free, or work for exposure. The reality is it takes doing the work to get noticed by the brands we want to work with, and sometimes that means doing it for free or to begin building the relationship with those brands. 2. If you are in this position, I would argue you have an amazing opportunity to show an incredible attitude and work ethic, while working for “exposure”, and then express to the brand (that you are now in their inbox) that you’d love to continue working together. While I agree that working for free isn’t the goal, it can absolutely get us closer to our goals. 🙌🏼 I hope that you’re having success with your clients and brands as you move forward mate and thanks so much for watching!
