In this video we talk about how to properly expose the Canon C200 for C-log2 in Raw-light. These principles also work with C-log and C-log3 and gives you an understanding of how to read the Waveform to get the best image out of the C200 or the C300MKIII.

I just add a canon lut on my monitor, and expose regular. So far, been happy with that approach!

I just got the Canon XF605 and noticed some grain when I shot in clog 3. I'll use your tips to see if that helps. Also, I noticed on your monitor you're shooting hdr-hlg?

Could I ask your opinion? I trust your input. Love your channel. I’m a beginner videographer, using my R6: Should I adjust my exposure with the CLOG image on the screen?..... or turn on the LOG view assist feature THEN adjust my exposure? MANY THANKS! I almost always use my external monitor with false color, zebras at 95%, and histogram.

I keep view assist on all the time. If your monitor has LUT support you can use the Canon c-log lut to see how it will turn out. Generally I recommend doing tests with your setup until you get a consistent look that you like

On my RED, I just expose for 800 ISO and pull things just barely under peaking, always looks good! Then their stop lights + zebras for underexposure + dropping my ISO (middle grey) if I don't have lots of uncontrolled highlights. Love this R5 & they just released RAW light for it, should I expose this in a similar way for C-Log2 (RAW then C-Log2 in post) at 800 ISO? Also wondering if I should do the same with C-Log3, I thought it was also designed for exposure at 800 ISO in bright settings. Thanks for the awesome video!

Yes to all of this. I’m not 100% on where to base the ISO on the R5 yet but you would be safe to do it at 800. Otherwise protecting your highlights when you can is a good way of doing it

@@BenSchubert I just found since the new R5 firmware, it won't let me dip my ISO under 800 shooting RAW unless I monitor in Clog. It let's me shoot in Clog-3 in Mp4 4K HQ & dip below 800 for low light grey shift, so not sure what's going on there.

Thanks for the useful info! Small correction that your comment at 5:17 that raw on C200 is 'in Clog2' might confuse people a bit. ISO400= 1Stop over ISO200= 2stops over

If you have that lut you should do a comparison. They should be similar. This is how I shoot low light scenes and it gives me lots of room in post

Brother I have one more doubt. When I set the red mark between 50 and 20 IRE, some times the wave form in camera shows that the highlight portions are going above the 100 ire( not the red marked area) . But when I brought that footage in post. In davinci resolve the wave form is located properly at the middle . As you said the exposure on camera monitor seems to be over exposed .. May I know Why is this. Please let me know when you get time.. Thanks for your help Bro...

It might just be that there are some elements in that section that are going over though most of it is fine. Also, your colour management settings in DaVinci Resolve will play a roll in that outcome

Hey Ben, I may have missed it in the video, but do you use the REC709 preview lut on your monitor or do you just view everything in the CLOG look?

I use the rec709 Lut. I would underexpose a lot otherwise. I need some sense of back to know how dark things are getting. I also use a preview LUT on a NinjaV to help.

@@BenSchubert Hiya Ben quick question here - is your Rec709 affecting the signal going to the waveform? If so, then the IRE values you described in the video would only apply if you are viewing with the Rec709 conversion LUT?

No. My lut is applied after signal so signal isn’t affected by the lut. I also go by the camera waveform and not the monitor

1tb Angelbird. I don’t really recommend it unless you are doing long recordings. I’ve had times on projects where the camera won’t recognize the card if I power down. Issue seems to be with the camera not the card.

Depends on your style. 256gb seems to be safest but I have pulled off big projects with bigger cards. You just have to eject them now and again. But if you aren’t shooting for longer that 20-30 min 256 is perfect

film in C-log or C-log 3 to better deal with this problem of grain in the dark? I own the C200, I still can't get a good exposure without grain on Raw.

C-log and c-log3 have more contrast so they hide it a little better. C-log2 shows the most grain but has more detail in highlights and shadows. The noise you see in the shadows is supposed to be darkened in post. Anything under 20ire will have noise. Make sure anything you want clearly visible like skin tones is above 20ire

Aperture only makes a difference when it changes where your exposure lands in the waveform

Watch at 1.25x or 1.5x speed. 00;00 to 3;30 can be summed up as, "Dont use the monitor and gauge with your eye, use the waveform". Good for beginners, refresher for experienced videographers, not useful for experts. You pick your bucket. Video could have been total of 60s.
