Using a miter saw that does not cut square is a frustrating experience. The principles I show in this video apply to most miter saws. However, the method of making the adjusts on your saw may be different, see your owners manual if you do not know how.
5 Cut Method: • 5 Cuts to a "Perfect" ...
This is done on a table saw, but the principle is the same.

I bought this mitre saw in June 2014, and I remodeled my basement with it. It it sturdy and it works great kzfaq.infoUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe . There's not a lot of extra play in the adjustments and it is definitely well built. It is lighter than higher-end sliding double bevel models, so I can move it myself, which is nice. When I had to cut 2x10 lumber, I had to flip the boards over and cut twice; but since most of my cutting was on smaller dimension lumber, the weight reduction and significantly lower price seemed to be a better trade off for the boards I did have to flip. Late in the project, I was able to borrow a DW718, and the sliding feature does make fast work of 2x10s, but it is a tank, and I stand by my choice of the DW715. I also added a laser guide (one of the arbor replacement style sold on Amazon), which is nice to have, but definitely not needed.

It wasn't until the other day that I needed my miter saw to be dead on accurate so I never worried about it before. Used it more as a chop saw because I knew I would get things accurate further down the line in my build. But, now I need that sucker perfect so thanks for the video! I'm happy to see that Dewalt designed ways to make easy adjustments.

Yes, it will be a much more useful tool in my shop! To be honest, I didn't think these cheaper miter saws could ever be used or relied upon to be accurate so I never really gave it much thought. I'm definitely going to explore it's capabiliities now that I can see it can be dialed in like this.

@@jaykeehan5813 I agree. I just meant there are miter saws that can cost twice as much out there. It's been two years since I made that comment and I still use this saw as my only miter saw. This is all well and good if you are aligning everything from one side of the saw. However, you should make a cut, flip the board to the opposite side of the cut and see if it also is square. Both sides of the saw may not cut the same. My Dewalt was considerably different between left and right hand cuts and I needed to grind and sand the fence to even get it to be flush. Just thought you should address this as an issue also.
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 3 жыл бұрын
That's why it's important to loosen both sides when you make any adjust, so the fence stays straight. If the fence is straight, it'll be 90 on both sides. If the fence isn't that far out... that's a serious manufacturing defect and I'd return it.

@@fredmcmurray6308 Fred, I own the same saw. When I bought mine, I tried everything to get it to cut square from either side of the blade. It was impossible to do. By using a PRECISION straight edge and feeler blade set, I discovered my right hand side of the fence (the pointed part of the fence next to the blade) was out by almost .036. I contacted Dewalt support and out of the kindness of their heart, they sent me a new fence for free and paid to have it shipped. My saw was past the warranty period and they took care of me anyway. That there Clark, is customer service above and beyond. Dewalt will be my first choice of tooling in future purchases. By the way, there is an excellent youtube video on how to turn your miter saw into a precision cutting machine if you are interested. The process is time consuming but it truly does make your saw extremely accurate.

GREAT ARTICLE. MY PROBLEM IS, WHEN AT 0 DEGREES MITER AND THE BLADE IS AT 0 DEGREES VERTICLE WITH WIXEY GAUGE, WHEN I GO TO 45 DEGREES MITER LEFT OR RIGHT, IT GOES 90.3 ON ONE 45 AND GOES 89.7 THE OTHER WAY INSTALLED A NEW WEAR RING OF NO AVAIL. HAVE YOU SEEN THIS BEFORE?
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting, that’s really annoying! I’d say when you swing it to miter, turn the blade and keep resetting the gauge. Three possible issues.. either you have arbor runout (turning the blade will confirm that if the number changes), the spinning part the saw is mounted too isn’t totally in plane with the rest of the saw. Or since your using a wixey instead of a square, it’s possible your saw just isn’t perfectly level. If you’re not resetting zero on the gauge at each turn, it’s possible if it’s not level there’s just enough movement to show up on the gauge. That’s one of the reasons I prefer referencing tool for anything that moves.. level and plumb doesn’t matter because I’m only checking the relationship between two surfaces.

Hi that was an excellent presentation. I followed all your instructions. I noticed one thing that the plate is not at the same level to the left where the picture of a hand is. It seems the plate sits a hair below where the picture of a hand is on the left side. When I push a ruler and go from right to left after I pass the yellow section ( the throat) and continuing going toward the left I pump slightly to the section where the picture of the hand is. Is it normal and this is how it should be or I should do some adjustments? Please advise. Thanks.what I meant the round section is not level with the left shoulder of the saw. I hope I could explain

Sounds like the detent in your saw isn't actually at 45, it may be adjustable. Could also be things like blade wobble or drift if your blade is old or dull.

Thanks for the video. That will help me. I do have another question though. I have the DW715 which is probably almost identical to yours. I have I think 11 presets on the saw that I can lock in place. But I can't seem to figure out how to lock the saw on other settings that are not preset. For example suppose I wanted to make a 40 degree cut. I've done this before but it's been so long now that I can't recall how I did it. Could you tell me that please?
@YouCanMakeThisToo

Oh man, it's been years since I had that saw. There's several levers in the front. One of them locks it in place when it's not in a detent. There is a way to do it though, just a matter of the right lever. If nothing else, google the owners manual.

I’m not familiar with that model. My guess is that the fence is adjustable and it sounds like the fence may be stressed out of flat. I’d loosen the fence entirely and resquare. Sounds like one side was loosened and moved to square, but the other side was pinched so it didn’t pivot but bent.

Am I missing something here? You did your test cuts and found out you had a slight wobble, then did nothing about it, or at least failed to show on the video how you fine-tuned it. Earlier in the video, you said you lake to make "rough" adjustments first and then fine-tune them. So without showing the fine-tuning, this video should be called How To Get Less Than Perfect Cuts On The Mitre Saw or How to Roughly Set Up Your Mitre Saw.
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 6 жыл бұрын
No worries, Sean. The bit your missing is you take the information from your test cuts and then make the fine adjustments using the same adjustment parts on your saw as you did before, just more subtly, until you’re happy with the cut. If that’s not helpful. Just watch the bit after the test cut where I identify which way the saw is off and then start it over where I show how to adjust for that error. I assumed tripling the length of the video to show me doing the same thing over and over would be pointless. Just don’t loosen everything entirely, loosen enough for a slight nudge. Retighten, and try again.

Read my response above and the original commenters response. I tried to keep the video short and didn’t think it’s be useful to show me doing the exact same thing three times... just keep adjusting till you nail it. It’s a trial and error thing.
