That feeling the first time you are planing in the footstraps! It is so worth all the hours of trying!

I was racer in the mid 80ees and teacher. The next step to a good performance and speed is called "close the gap" of sail. You have to give pressure with back arm on the wishbone. Push your weight on front,release all your weight on harness and front arm. Pull wishbone closer to your backfood and down to the sea surface. There you can reach much more pressure from wind, your weight uplifted,no resistance ,the speed increase dramatically and the board glide like a soap on water. Try it. )))

Stabilize with your LEFT foot (stiff footwrist) the board, get decided into the rear strap and at the same time sheet in the sail as much as you feel the sail is still drawing nicely. Do ing so youwill find yourself havin closed the gap between sail and boarddeck. And.......steer the board mainly with the feet....remeber snowboarding or skiing.

Hi, in the footstraps your posture, your stance is similar to gliding without footstraps? I mean flexing with the back leg, weight onto back leg ? Thanks Adam

I feel pretty confident in the harness, but when I get some speed and begin to plane my board keeps turning upwind. Any tips? I am guessing that applying more pressure to the footmast through the position of the harness lines should help it (the lines are positioned neutral on the boom, center on the sail pressure point). I also tried shifting my body forward and it didn't help.

the only advice I can give is to pull stronger with back arm/hand, you probably do not give pressure enough and you go as a leaf at wind, you must pretend to be the master of wind. A phrase that I read on french magazine when I was at beginning it was "tirez come un malade" , pull same as ill. Pull strong and close the sail to your body ;)

Try more mast foot pressure by putting more weight down in the harness. Push through a straight front leg. Push the board flat with the toes of your feet

Hi, I windsurf mostly on a UK reservoir. Winds often fluky. On a 165ltr board with the centre board usually down. I always lose way when prepping a tack, and end up hobbling around the mast, dipping the boom and it looks a mess. Would I lose less way if I kick the Centre board up?

@JB: As an old git whose life was windsurfing in the 80's I can remember wobbling. I learnt off Southsea Beach with a copy of Ken Winner"s book "The Wind is Free" propped open on the beach with two pebbles. I'd go off fall in, tack, come back to the beach and the book - review incessantly. I did get to the National Championships in the end, but in all honesty I never troubled the leader board or the podium. So to offer some gentle advice. If you're tacking keep that centre board down, or maybe halfway. That's what allows you to turn up to the wind in light to medium winds. Then one foot in front of the mast and a jump round in one hit. Wobble, recover and perfect till it becomes second nature. There will be those who say keep the dagger board up. As with all things sailing and wind related it relies on your speed and wind strength. You can tack a no centreboard windsurfer, but you just have to be a touch more committed. Rake the rig back and push with your back foot and it will turn into wind. Again a rapid jump around and sheet it. Lighter winds: dagger down and a more fluid set of graceful motions again initiated by raking the rig back. Cleverly enough with the rig back you can almost step over the base of the mast rather than jump round it. So practice now in these high winds we are having, but use the appropriate sail size so you aren't over powered. Right that's me done l'm back off to teach RYA Powerboating next week. Now that was a step along from my days on Mistrals, Windsurfer Regattas and the delights of sinking on a Chapter 270 pintail winger! Enjoy the windsurfing it can lead you anywhere.

If you head upwind slightly more this will give you extra control. be careful not to do this too much as if you do you will lose too much power

@GetWindsurfing
@GetWindsurfing 7 жыл бұрын
Well if you feel out of control.........then try heading upwind for control. If you want to go faster go downwind more for power.......but keep in mind that if with the power you are losing control then head upwind again to regain it.

How to slip into the foostraps with GUSTY wind 1. Enough wind for gliding (not enough: forget the straps) 2. Your Foot joints (ankle) stabilize your Board. 3. Put your feet wider apart your legs more spread 4. forward Foot joint only stabilizes the Board 5. Backfoot being close to the back-footstrap...slip into it 6. Now stabilize the Board with the Foot in the BACK-footstrap 7. Step into the front-footstrap.

I'm trying to learn planing this year... First year with my board, a 133 2008 model futura, but I have many difficulties, mostly to use straps. When I insert first feet I start to loose power, then with the second one the board goes upwind... maybe some setting is wrong?
@GetWindsurfing
@GetWindsurfing 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrea, This can be a tricky stage in learning to windsurf. There could be lots of reasons why you find this difficult including some of the settings and tuning of the equipment. I is impossible to say exactly without watching you in person, but my genral advice would be the following....... Usualy I often find when teaching that when people try to learn the footstraps they might stand up right and this will cause you to let the sail out, loose power and head upwind. Try to stay commited to the harness with the body low to keep in control and the sail powered up.

I was addicted to wind surfing and I was getting really good, that I was surfing in 20+ knots wind, HOWEVER I just couldn't put my rear leg in to strap. Rear part of the board used to sink as soon as I start to put my rear feet in. I tried n tried just couldn't figure it out. Looking at the video, you need more practice and experience to do so. Very good video

The rear of the board was sinking? Yes, that's exactly what happens and yes...that's what it feels like initially. You are basically doing a "wheelie" on a surfboard. Next you pull the boom down towards you(sheeting in kinda) to grab more wind and balance your back fall. Now, you have to learn a new skill which is balancing fore/aft. You don't see this on most windsurf video, because they are riding on good wind or have a huge sail. There is a big transition for intermediates when you start to learn to plane. No longer do you rely on "sail tilting" to go left/right. When you plane you actually begin to "surf". That is you tilt the board exactly like a surfboard or skateboard. You just grab the wind to make you go, but the toe/heel action controls the left/right turning of the board. At the same time, you 'start sliding" a little bit. Beginners sometimes find themselves 'accidentally" planing in strong winds with medium/small sail. When the sail starts buzzing and the board starts becoming "squirrely"...that's planing. Keep on.
