In this video I show the best way that I have found to get rid of / control Boxelder bugs for under $5 (if you already have a sprayer).
I make a simple mix of Ajax (citrus), approximately 10 fl oz , and 1 gallon of water in a spray bottle and spray all visible bugs and the surrounding areas.
If sprayed sufficiently the bugs will die within a matter of 5 to 10 seconds.
Ajax (Amazon): amzn.to/2DFcNpg
1 gallon sprayer (Amazon):amzn.to/2PA1AJi
Ajax (HomeDepot): www.homedepot.com/p/Ajax-169-...
1 gallon sprayer (HomeDepot): www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-1-Gal...

I would try removing the decorative wood stuff around your house, it seems to be what they feed on, ive dug out a few weed like bush plants that they were congregating around and they all seemed to dissapear after that. We also did dawn mixed with water and that has the same result. My next step is to plant some stuff around the house that they hate this spring, i read lavender, spearmint, peppermint Mint, clove, sage, garlic, and eucalyptus is some of their dislikes.

Thank you so much for this video. We were getting inundated with these bugs indoors during October…tried diatomaceous earth and new weather stripping and they were still getting in. Spent about $3 on a giant bottle of citrus Ajax and one spray session later, bug incidents are down almost 90 percent. It was also helpful for identifying cracks indoors where they were hiding…a few sprays in the right places and the bugs were RUNNING! Lol. Sanity = restored!

I did the Dawn dish soap with water in a spray bottle but that only killed the ones that the spray came in contact with and I had to drowned them to kill them. It did nothing to keep them away so I ordered Harris Asian Lady Beetle & Box Elder Killer after watching a KZfaqr rave about it. Amazon reviews seemed pretty promising as well. I’ll be updating under my comment once I receive the product and test it out.

Eggs are on leaves, make sure you treat your trees by spraying leaves in spring and fall! I have a outdoor sprayer that was used to wash windows, like windex because it sprays high. Fill it up with soapy water spray tress, yard, roof, and siding. Mainly get eggs on fallen leaves. It helps. Bugs fly around and I have several pine trees. They enjoy sunning on south side of house.

I have them bad, we built on a nature trail with tons of trees, alot of the trees are box elder and maple. In fact our HOA requires every house in our subdivision to have a maple tree in their front yard as the subdivision is called the maples. Never had a problem till last year and we built 15 years ago. We will be using this method because my husband has Parkinsons with can be caused by insecticide and herbicides. Thanks for sharing this and adding comments!!

I talked to you last year and I sprayed all last summer. I was so happy in the spring I only saw one bug through the end of April which they usually start coming out in early March. Right across the street from me they did a big construction project and cleared about 20 acres of field and trees. Within a week or ten days I had all of their box elder bugs swarming my trees. So I sprayed all of this summer again until the very end so we'll see what happens next year. Lol.

I had a bunch of these bugs crowding on my trees (australian flame / tree / Brachychiton populneus). So I used the hoover (vacuum cleaner) which can suck up fluid. I mixed dishwashing liquid and water into the barrel of my hoover - and vacuumed my trees, sucking them all into the barrel. (the family was very entertained by me vacuuming trees) however - it worked a charm! They somehow tend to just pop back again - so the process needs to be repeated - I will now spray the trees and affected areas too...thanks!

I live in the Canadian prairies (province of Saskatchewan, which is north of Montana and North Dakota) and I’m pretty sure we don’t have Ajax up here. I’m assuming that it’s an all purpose cleaner and wondering if you could tell me what’s in it. I’m thinking that there’s probably something similar available with a citrus scent, as there are a few cleaners like that. I know that Ajax was around when I was growing up in Toronto. I get Boxelder bugs bad around my townhouse. All my windows face west except for one that faces south. They swarm my home in the fall. I’ve sprayed them with soapy water and it doesn’t seem to do much good. I’ve also used diatomaceous earth with limited success. Last fall, I dealt with over 60 of them coming into my home and I’ve encountered several coming back in this spring due to the inconsistent weather. Hopefully, it will stay warm now. I just want to keep them out for good this year. I can’t stand the sight of bugs in my home and these things drive me crazy!

I have been fighting them for years. It’s frustrating. I use the same method in this video and it kills them fast but it’s frustrating to see them come right back the next year. I think that the next move is to cut down the tree they like. I guess if they have no food source they will move on. I also notice they tend to like to sunbathe on light paint colors. I think this year I am going to go and caulk up spots in my porch they seem to pour out if. I’m afraid though it’s all in vain until the tree is removed. Great video. Cheers!

This method works very well. It is safe for animals as well. It also works for hornets and flying/other bugs. It works by suffocation. It clogs the breathing bits in the abdomen of insects. Not all but most. Great way to kill Hornets or yellow jackets. Spraying Pyrethrin Spray which is an insecticide and will kill all stages of insect. Caution must be taken with this around pets and water/ponds/lakes and so on. This kills eggs. You will have to do these methods a few times to end the problem but if they are up to a few miles away it will reoccur. I usually spray 4 to five times a season. Spring to fall.

We have a bunch of maples, and honestly never really noticed them til the huge pine tree was gone. I get a LOT of sun now and thats where they hangout. Going to experiment first with more natural blend to avoid poisoning birds etc. Adding citrus to #1 on my concoction list / what read might work: hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, diatomacious earth, dish soap, borax (these are supposed to dehydrate). Repellents vinegar, tea tree oil, neem oil (read spray on leaves)🤞🖖also going to try trapping them in petroleum covered surface or fly tape. So, I took your advice bought the pump the Ajax and I don't think I put enough in, but I could see it working here's my thing the guy that owned the house left me with all those rocks also why mess with a pump I'm going to mix the stuff use a huge bucket or vat and douse it like a tidal wave, so it saturates down into the rocks and mulch and whatever else is under the rocks then use the pump for windows, cracks etc. I think it would save you time.

I don't think it matters much what kind of soap you use. Any liquid soap would probably work. And you don't need a high concentration. I use about 3/4 teaspoon of Dawn dish soap in a 1.5 litre jug (1/3 gallon), so that's about 2 teaspoons of soap per gallon. Use as little soap as works so you don't end up coating your house and yard in soap unnecessarily. As a test, spray some bugs and watch them - at first it doesn't seem to bother them, but after about 10-15 seconds you'll see them staggering and struggling, then they lose control of their front legs and go face first on the ground and .... they're dead. I believe the soap and water works by suffocating them. Insects breath through holes in their abdomen and they have a waxy hydrophobic (water repelling) coating so water beads up and rolls off them. A wee bit of soap breaks down the surface tension of the water and defeats the hydrophobic coating and the beading so the water covers their breathing holes. Some sources say there are contributing chemical ingredients in the soap too. It's not efficient to go around spraying individual bugs here and there. Maple bugs are very co-operative in their own mass murder because they like to congregate (mass) in warm sunny places. Locate where and when they are massing and go after the masses. You can kill tens of thousands of bugs in a few minutes, and then come back the next day and do it again. You'll notice the numbers in the masses start to decrease as you decimate the population over a few days.

I'd agree. I think it's the soap that suffocates them. I like the citrus since they are supposed to avoid the smell, but can't confirm it helps.

One answer, Bifenthrin. It’s pricey but it will kill and REPEL any bug for 90 days. If you live in an area where sun hits hard you might have to spray every 60 days maybe but it’s so effective..

Cullum, Soapy water such as you showed works great for immediate knock down but for a lasting solution I've had fantastic luck using TEMPO by Bayer. It will last quite a while. And if you ever fight Grasshoppers TEMPO and a little Malathion will knock them down large or small. We've had a new bug move in called the Elm Seed Bug. They look like a smaller cousin to the Box Elder Bug and they STINK when you smash them. Thank you for your video!

I live in central California. In my yard, we just had our TALL 15+ year old pomegranate tree and Bubblegum 'Toka' Plum Tree removed. Although we enjoyed the fruits that we got with them, they trees itself became too large and a nuisance for our neighbors and my family. But ever since we had them removed, these elder box came out of nowhere and has infested my whole front, side, and back yard! I honestly don’t know if these trees were what attracted their attention in the first place because this was never a problem before the take down. Unfortunately, I have a little get-together outside in a week, so I’m prepared to go to my local Home Depot and get the soap and sprayer, and pray to god that this works. My plan is to start today, and keep spraying every other day (if not every) and kill these suckers before my week is up. So, thanks for the video and wish me luck. Lol.

Yes, it works but as pointed out it’s only a contact solution and has not residual effectiveness. I did this last session, and it was a continuous battle to keep the population down to about 30% of the original swarm. When they came out in force this year, I went full pesticide with Spectracide's Triazicide on a hose sprayer. One application ($10) all gone for over a month now and no sign of them returning. Really hated going the chemical death route but just couldn't take it anymore.

@@cullumstirling they have a nest somewhere, be it inside your home, somewhere in the garage, or even in the tree. I would watch where they congregate during the peak sunlight hours. They won't be nesting too far from that. Also look for the (telltale) eggs stuck to many horizontal and vertical surfaces of your home and garage. The eggs look like little red zits randomly attached to your home. The eggs are resilient to the environment, and it's possible the bugs have built a antibody to the dawn.

Unfortunatly my friend this is a hard battle to win! If anyone in your neibourhood has Boxelder maple... That's their go to place to feed! and if it's even near by they will fly from the tree up to 2 miles , if you got Boxelder maple in 2 mile radious it's a hard battle , if it's closer then they might come back , untill then you just got to do this over and over , maybe they have colony set up that go feed and come back.
