Catherine reviews the options for getting rid of dandelions in your grass and lawn, including weed and feed fertilizer, hand weeding with a soil knife, traditional lawn weed killer, and iron HEDTA weed control products. She reviews the pros and cons of each method, and describes in detail how iron HEDTA kills dandelions without injuring your lawn. Iron HEDTA is a soluble form of iron, so it's an organic, natural method to kill dandelions that is much safer and effective than using household or concentrated vinegar to kill weeds. If you've ever wonder how to safely get rid of dandelions in your lawn, this video will help you decide the right method for you.

I have a large and beautiful cottage garden that I have created. It's brought in a ton of bees. But I don't enjoy the dandelions that create a mess in my grass, they take over EVERYTHING. They have seeped into every beautiful ground cover and flower I've planted. I've never noticed many bees on them, the bees much prefer my luscious flowers and fruit/vegetable garden. Thank you for creating a video with "friendly" ways of taking care of the dandelions that seem to want to take over my labor intensive garden!

You are a great teacher. You were very informative and avoided using filler words. You knew where you were going and got there without unnecessary delays. One question, if I were to make a mix of 50-50, horticulture vinegar with regular white vinegar would it be strong enough to eliminate a dandelion?

Here in Canada they outlawed pesticides yrs ago. I have a 1 acre lot and have lost the battle with them. So I let them grow. If sombody wants to pick them to eat then drop by, you can’t miss my house, it’s probably the only house that has thousands of dandelions on the street. I bet my neighbors hate me.

Hey everyone, to clarify, bees have plenty of food sources in my yard. I grow a wide variety of trees, shrubs and flowers that bloom from the beginning of the growing season to the first fall frost to support pollinators. While dandelions are a non-native plant in the area where I live, it's great to see so many people interested in supporting ecosystem health and embracing the natural environment. In my perspective, responsibly managing weeds with the safest alternatives is an important part of caring for the land.

Or you could pick the young greens eat them in salads, harvest the yellow blossoms and make wine, and if that's not enough you can pull the roots roast them and grind them and make a hot drink. Of course that should probably make for a lot less dandelions next year but you can't do any of that if you use herbicides.

Dandelions are a wonderful spring tonic, can be used for salads, the petals make wine and the buds can be pickled like capers if you collect them before they open. They are a great source for pollinators and a plant that has many benefits. The problem is the lawn, not the dandelions. But if you feel the need to control them, dig them out. Poisons in your yard affect everything, kill plants you call weeds and also pollinators. So go with the soluble iron. Good information here for humans who think they need to rule the world. Skip the poisons, join the living world!

@catherinemoravec1648
@catherinemoravec1648 4 жыл бұрын
The easiest place to buy it is through an online retailer if your local garden center doesn't carry it. My lawn fills in the spot where the dandelion was, so there's no need to reseed. But that may be because I have Kentucky blue grass, which may not be the case with other types of grass. The good thing is that dandelions grow from one central point so when they come out they don't leave too much of a bare spot. I just spray them and they shrivel up. Sometimes I'll weed out the dead plant if it's too messy, otherwise I just leave it in place to decompose.

Not a good idea... "Salt has some effect in killing plants. The sodium in sodium chloride (salt) is toxic and will get washed around your lawn trying to kill everything it touches. The sodium won’t get decomposed over time - it might go from your lawn to a stream to some farm - all the while damaging any plant it comes into contact with. Please don’t do this! It’s terrible for the environment and not effective on your plants either."

Dandelions are actually very good at pulling out nutrients deep from the soil, and help loosen up the soil by growing in the hardest places for plants to grow, and subsequently increase the overall health of your yard, by feeding the plants and insects. Their leafs are very nutrition dense and act as a fertillizer for the ground, and a food for surface bacteria and insects, not to mention the flower itself which provides sugar for the bees and the ants, not to mention the pollinators, and this all works out to help your other plants thrive. The dandelion will not outcompetes the grass, they grow best in poor soil conditions, which is to say they aren't going to kill your grass, and so it's a very good idea to keep them around.

The rule of thumb, when adding one liquid to another is this: AAA, which stands for "Always Add Acid;" in this case means adding the Acid/weedkiller liquid to the water. When the Acid/any liquid is the more volatile of the two liquids, there is less chance of a violent reaction, harmful to the lungs, eyes, nose, etc.

I leave and encourage dandelions but I do pull out all the fake dandelions. So this video is good for killing all the fake dandelions, maybe make a video about telling the difference between real and fake dandelions. Dandelions leaves are edible, good for salads, especially Greek Salads, the roots can be used to make Dandelion coffee, the deep roots also give the lawn nutrients and as everybody else here has said they are good for the bees. One thing I have noticed about my dandelions is that the stalks for the flowers are really short these days, even after I mow the flowers remain. I wonder if evolution has occurred with them.

Get a weed popper, pop them out, fill a 5 gal pail half full with them , add water, cover, let sit for 2+ weeks and you get free fertilizer.

Dandelions are a sign that your lawn is too compacted. Just aerate your lawn properly by seep spiking, or fork and lift with a fork, early in the season. Hard work, but it helps the lawn. Less dandelions, and no nasty chemicals. Dandelions are there only few a month or so, anyway.

Bless the people that love the dandelion. Not only are they great for bees, they also help the soil. That's why their roots are so deep. They aerate the soil and bring nutrients to the upper soil. Ong live the dandelion

The yellow flowers are beautiful, good for you in salads. Beautiful white plums we played with and blew in the wind when we were children. I understand! But you must not be from the South where Lightning Bugs and Whipper Wills are King. How sad!😥

I was once told to pull the flowers and leaves off, leaving only the root, then pour boiling water over the root. I don't know if this works, I've never been much of a gardener.

An alternative is, pluck them out of the ground when they are young and toss the head and leaves in your salad, you can also dry out the roots and make it into a herbal (caffeine free) coffee substitute, there is no such thing as a weed just wild flowers growing where someone doesn’t want them 🌺💕

Where critters rip away at weeds piece by piece for a meal they leave the root in the ground and the result is not so many weeds. So I just tear the tops off one leaf and stem at a time and drop them right there. A natural lawn will compost them fast, the worms love them. Every year I have less weeds AND a better turf since I learned this.

Can you elaborate as I did not quite understand. You cut one leaf off the dandelion and leave it there to compost?
@Paul-dy8mo
@Paul-dy8mo 3 жыл бұрын
@@pingpong9656 I rip all the leaves off one at a time so the root remains where it was. If it grows back I'll do this again rather than disturb the soil.

@@Paul-dy8mo So rip off all the leaves and cover root with leaves - like micro compost to suppress further growth - definitely worth a shot.

@@pingpong9656 Yes, like micro mulch... helpful because the grass is usually thinner around a weed

Dandelions are a good source of iron and can be eaten in a salad with other leafy greens or added to stews or omelettes, as a child my brothers and I ate Dandelion leaves regularly with our meals. Why put weed killer on an edible plant?

I agree that they are good to eat. I grow my edible plants in other parts of my yard, including my vegetable garden, but not in my lawn. I'm not saying get rid of all of them, I just prefer not to have them in my grass.

I don't care what anyone says. I hate them and I use 2,4,D. I pick the flowers and buds and then spray them individually. You must pick the flowers and buds because they will still go to seed even after spraying and even after wilting if you don't.
