How do you get rid of Dandruff? I've been getting a lot of questions about Seborrheic Dermatitis (the medical term for dandruff) - what is it, why you get it and how to treat it - so I thought I'd try to answer some of these in this video!
There are a few reasons why you may get Dandruff - genetics and environment are usually the most common. But this is a VERY common condition that is very controllable and simple to treat.
Hope it's helpful!!
Thanks for your questions and keep them coming!!

I had a severe case of dandruff every single winter. I started using dandruff shampoos and didn't work. So I tought: well, let's wash them more often. I started washing them every day and things got even worse. My scalp was inflamated and irritated, i continuously started scratching over my ears and behind my neck. Then, understanding that wasn't caused by a fungus or something, I did some reverse engineer and I tought: well, let's do the exact opposite. I started washing my hair every 4-5 days using only cold water and minimal shampoo. After a month or so the dandruff totally disappeared and I finally feel good. Try!

I suffered with bad dandruff for years. I tried everything. Then I tried tea tree oil. 10-15 drops in warm water. I wash my hair every 3-4 days. Ordinary reg shampoo. Rinse off then a final rinse with about 250mls with the tea tree oil. Immediate relief from itching, no more flakes. I really suffered with this condition to the point I stopped wearing black clothes. I wear black now with total confidence. No more white flakes

@@macydiy9697 How exactly do you use apple cider vinegar? I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis about two years ago and I have scalp buildup, which flakes off from time to time, but eventually returns again. Frequent hair washing sometimes improves the whole situation, but sometimes it's simply useless. "Sitting" forever on hormonal drugs is also not a very cool idea ...

For those saying there are no answers in this video. There are clearly answers, you’re just not listening. Dr Sandra Lee’s recommendations: She said dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis) is caused by fungal infection so look for shampoos with ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide etc. in them.

I realised that if I wash my hair too often I can get dandruff as well. So what I think is to wash your hair just in the middle required. I've figured out that for myself I have to wash them every two days, not more not less, and REGULARLY. Keep doing it. Because when I miss the cycle, I always get dandruff (especially when it's hot, I live in a tropical area, so it plays a lot in it)! So that's one idea of how I've got rid of them almost entirely (there's almost nothing now, unless I break the cycle of washing every 2 days) and my hair stay in good shape as well! PS: If you have lots of dandruff at the beginning, and you try my idea, do not tie your hair in any way! When your skin is almost cleared, you can start to tie you hair but not much. Let your hair and especially the skin of head, breathe. Otherwise if you tie your hair it will be more favorable for the dandruff to "live" because the area will have a higher temperature+less air. PPS: This all based on my experience and people around me. Maybe it will not work for people living in areas if big temperature differences? But maybe you can still try.

I have dermatitis on my eyelids, groin, ear canal, and back of my ear/earlob. I did a patch test and my dermatologist believes it's contact dermatitis caused by fragrance. However it's greasy scaling and seems like it could be SB. The dermatitis seems to be responding well to anti-fungals especially Nystatin. If the dermatitis responds well to Nystatin can I assume that it is not contact dermatitis and not because of fragrances i.e. its seborrheic dermatitis?

I started exfoliating my scalp (once a week) I just mix Epsom salt with my shampoo to make a paste and make sure to gently scrub my scalp with it I never really use shampoo on my hair itself just the scalp, but this was the only thing that helps me manage and keep it under control (and it makes my hair softer)
@BangMaster96
@BangMaster96 5 жыл бұрын
Guys, here is another tip, if you don't want to use all these chemicals in shampoos and other products, go natural. Wash your hair with water and lemon, so take a glass of water, add half or full slice of lemon juice in it, and massage that water into your scalp. Let it stay there for 10 minutes. Then go take a bath or shower, and wash your hair with cold water, to make sure the lemon is off your scalp. Do this every day, or three times a week, or however times you can manage. But in short amount of time after couple days of doing this, you will notice your dandruff going away. Lemon exfoliates your skin, kills any bacteria or fungus on your scalp, and removes all oil and residue in your hair and scalp. That is why it works. And once you notice no more dandruff, you can either stop this, or continue to apply this treatment once a week to keep your scalp and hair healthier.

Rahziman Rahman I didn’t try the lemon . But if you put half apple cider vinegar and half water in a bottle and apply it to your scalp in the shower and let it sit for 10-15 mins it will burn a little but it gets rid of dandruff . But recently what I’ve been using and what’s really working for me is aloe Vera juice I apply that on my scalp and hair after I shampoo and condition and it helps your hair stay moist ... and also jojoba oil is good for the scalp too . I was so scared when I realized I had a lice check before I went to a multi person camp, I found myself crying and picking through my head. I found a few white specks, worrying they were nits, but when I scratched my head I found flakes upon flakes. I texted my best friend and cried to her on the phone. She told me to watch this video and so I did. Thank you, you saved my hair!!

Very educational. I thought dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis were two different conditions. I don't know what I have exactly because the flakes aren't very dry like described. I would like to wash my hair every other day because it's better for the actual hair strand health/dryness/frizziness, and it just wastes more water but I really have to wash mine everyday to keep my scalp less oily. I like using T/Sal with salicylic acid mixed with a sulfate free shampoo, and let it soak for awhile in the shower. Head and Shoulders and those other shampoos don't do much for me. Every once in awhile I mix tea tree, peppermint and jojoba oil into a pre-shower scalp treatment for instant itchy skin relief. The longer you leave it on the better. There's no cure like she said, but this is making it more manageable..

finally a dermatologist confirming I should wash as much as I need. I only recently found out I don't have dandruff but actually scalp eczema and have had it for 6+ years which caused my scalp to have pimples, scabs, a LOT of scabs actually and it was constantly BURNING. So it wasn't just dandruff, scalp eczema has dandruff as a possible side effect, but is not the same as dandruff, I just thought burning scalps were part of dandruff for years so that was NOT fun. The assistant doctor told me to shampoo LESS, only once a week! because I said my scalp has become way oilier since my scalp irritation started because washing it helped it calmed down so I slowly had to wash more which makes my hair get oily fast, but washing once a week never worked and made the burning worse, so now I wash whenever I notice my hair or scalp needs it, the medical shampoo I got also didn't work and at first was too weak and then started irritating my scalp aswell, so luckily I found a soothing DIY hair mask from flaxseed gel that I would apply focusing on my scalp area, and it got rid of most of my scabs :) It's still not 100% gone, but I might try to use coal tar once in a while to get a nice cleanse in there, as the flaxseed just helps with scabs and soothing, not really with the dirt. Atleast now I know that shampooing when needed is not dumb and my reaction was correct! :D

Not to mention very fair Irish skin. It really gets her down, all the ointments and special products she has to use. But I learned a lot here, so at least we understand that it's not the Hair that causes this, but the scalp. Please, please....can you do a video on Keratosis Pilaris? We both have it chronically, moderate to severe, although it does improve a bit in the summer. What kind of home remedies, OTC products, and prescription ointments would help us? Struggled with Seborrheic Dermatitis until 'Kottakkal Ayyappala Keratailam' oil came to my rescue. Used it twice a week after regular shampooing, and it worked wonders! A doctor from Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakal in india which i researched about recommended it through a $2 USD online appointment (medication and oil cost extra). This oil not only banished my dermatitis but any kind of dandruff too. If appointments aren't your thing, just try this oil-it's a game-changer! Trust me, your future self will thank you.

i realize this is a year later and you might not see this or you’ve maybe heard this already if you do see this, but that’s actually dry skin versus dandruff. i have severe dandruff and that comes from an oily scalp, with flakes that are also oily and feel moist to the touch. they kinda feel and look like the little dried flecks of lotion on the tip of lotion bottles. dry skin/scalp comes from a lack of moisture in the scalp, which makes the skin become dry and start to flake off. this feels just like dry skin on other parts of your body. what would make it go away is exfoliation of the scalp and a good conditioner, and also taking more precautions when dyeing hair like conditioning treatments before, applying oil to the scalp right before dyeing, etc.

@@jimbeetron I could be wrong and just completely made this up in my head lol, but I think I heard that there is a very small percentage of people who have an EXTREMELY sensitive scalp, so they shouldn't do anything to it like dyeing etc. So I've seen like one kpop idol who never dyes their hair due to this condition(or maybe something else but she mentioned something about her scalp) I've never had a single not even one teeny tiny flake in my hair but I started having crazy amounts after dyeing it, this makes me think I have a condition.

My husband has a fairly large amount of patches of dandruff in his beard/head hair. He has seen a dermatologist and that's what he was told ( he also has eczema but he was told what's on his head and under his beard is not eczema). But, we usually shy away from prescriptions unless they are a last option, we believe that trying to solve the problem naturally first is healthier for our bodies in the long run (unless the ailment is a matter of life and death). Are there any natural alternatives that you can recommend before using prescription shampoos or topical steriods? My husband uses a topical steriod lotion for his eczema, but only when it get bad enough that our natural remedies don't work. Any advice would be highly appreciated. Also, could you try mentioning natural alternatives along side of conventional bio-med answers? I know a lot of people really do respect doctors, but wish they would suggest natural pathways of healing before going straight to prescriptions. Side note: we do use Melleluca and Lavender essential oils and those seem to help, but only sometimes.

I mix 1/4 cup oil with 1tsp of boric acid powder I bought off Amazon. I put it on once or twice a day. This works for seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infections (baby cradle cap) etc. I am not a doctor and Boric acid is toxic if injested or absorbed. If you put the boric acid in water and apply I think I heard that it does get absorbed and that's no good. With coconut oil it just sits on the top of the skin. Also consider a coconut oil/boric acid scalp treatment for a week or so to help kill the fungus that causes seborrheic dermatitis. I have mine under control my 1. Eating gluten free 2. Vit D3/K2 liquid 2000 iu 3. Boric acid coconut oil when necessary or accidental eating of gluten. Good luck!

Now I can go a week without washing my hair and still no flakes, even though by that time my hair would be oily and dirty.
