Such a gracious channel host. The same questions keep coming across and you answer them all. Enjoyed your video. I will be trying a plastic drain snake and then the baking soda, salt and vinegar soak, rinsing it down with the boiling water in the morning. The little mites I keep seeing around the kitchen drain have overstayed their welcome. Thanks for this. I'll be checking out your other videos as the need arises. :)

Years ago, my dad came up with the idea of straightening out a wire hanger, then bending one end of it into a hook small enough to fit in drain yet large enough to grasp whatever's in there. Cut to the length that suits your need. For a bathroom sink, you'll need to remove the stopper if it has a crosswise lever from the drain pipe that goes through it.

Draino is great for the slow or clogged drain, but pouring a cup of baking soda followed by two cups of vinegar will kill the sewer flys & their eggs.

I've had that issue in 2 brand new apartments. The builders had dumped all kinds of crap down the drain and you would be surprised what I found. There was plastic bags of screws, nails, carpet, concrete, rubble, silicone, grout, sand, nails, tiles, so over time using the shower it got so bad , the flies, the smell. Omggg. Any way, what you did wasn't good enough. You have to flush and flush with boiling water up high and flush and scrub. Use dish washing liquid and then use buckets of hot water held high and tip it down the drain until the water runs clear. You don't need draino. Just remove the debris. Get a garbage bag, put it around your arm and grab the crap out with your hand and arm. Yes it's gross, but it works. I had a plumber come the next day and say, omg wow I've never seen a drain so clean in all my life.lol so the blockage I called them about, was unblocked by me, the plumber didn't have to do a single thing lol. He was the one who told me not to waste my money on draino. He Said I did the right thing by using dish washung liquid as it's best to break up the gunk. Try it and I swear you won't have a single drain fly ever again. Just clean your drains often.

One would think that dirty drains are the only thing that leads to drain flies but 6 months ago I replaced all of my drainwork throughout the house and back to the sewer tap. not one scrap of old pipe remained (including the stacks), but within 3 days of the completion of these measures the drain flies began appearing for the first time ever!! That's right, No drain flies in the disgusting 80-year-old pipes! Apparently the flies prefer mostly clean pipes with just a hint of junk. The way I tackle the problem is to pour a little white vinegar into every drain, every night -- including the floor drains. It is not a complete cure but I see only 1 or 2 flies a week now as opposed to 100 per day. The vinegar raises the acidity of the water in the traps, making it near impossible for flies to get a foothold.
@FixEverythingYourself3 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's interesting (and surprising) that they came back that quickly with new pipes.

Let me tell you, I get so creeped out by showers with any discoloration or dirt in the crevices. Oh, it makes me sick. I currently have a shower like this( which I plan to schedule a remodeling within a few weeks). I won't step a foot in it until it's spic and span, so I travel all the way upstairs to shower instead, lol. However, before remodeling, it is my goal to solve the drain fly issues. It was hard watching this video because of the shower and drain gunk. Nonetheless, your video was very helpful, I gave you a big fat thumbs up👍🏽. I'll be sharing this with my husband.

I used to be a janitor for a school we used to get drain flies in the floor drains in the bathroom easiest way to deal with that problem is every night when nothing is going to be used like before you go to bed poor a half a cup of bleach down into the trap a couple of days of that and you won't see anything anymore and once a month or so in bathrooms that don't get any use like say you have a downstairs shower or sink that no one really ever uses make sure you go in there once a month once every couple of weeks and run some water so your traps don't dry out

Thank you for this . We have lived in our home for about 11 months and to be honest we have two bathrooms but we only use the shower in the 2nd bath . We go to the actual bathroom in each. But since we have lived here we never actually shower or bath in the other bathroom and lately I have been seeing this moth looking things but they are tiny . It’s not like yours there isn’t a bunch but just here and there I see them in that bathroom. Apparently they are called drain flies . Now I know what to do to get rid of them . I’m guessing the people that lived here before us must have had a lot of hair or something ? Either way , I’m gonna clean that drain and gonna start having the kids shower in there so it’s not just an unused room
@FixEverythingYourself3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, K. Yes, they start off with just a few but will grow to larger quantities if left alone. I don't know that it's only hair that's the culprit; any buildup of organic material in the pipes can cause the problem, I believe. But good plan on using the bathroom. You probably don't have to use it daily - maybe once or twice a week. Or do what others have suggested and pour a cup of bleach down the drain occasionally and also run the water from time to time rather than making everyone use a bathroom they don't like to use.

I’ve had this problem and found an even simpler solution. Pour boiling water down the drain, slowly. It’s important to do it slowly so that the water trickles down rather than rushes through. I did this two years ago and haven’t seen another one since. Sometimes, as I understand, the solution may depend on where you live and how suitable the overall environment is for these bugs, but where I live the boiling water worked great!
@Davethreshold3 жыл бұрын
Those things are disgusting! 😱 LOL Thank you for the video. They spend quality time in your john also and wind up on your ham sandwich. 🥶 It's essential to cover all of the drains after you treat them. That way they'll stay in there until you get rid of them. There are rubber drain covers, (or plugs) of all sizes. Find one that will fit over it about a 1/2 inch extra. Put a weight on top to trap them. Also, good old generic liquid bleach will dissolve all hair. I would pour about a half-gallon down there and then cover it and leave it alone for two hours. I did that and they are gone.

I don't know how the other person made traps. I found that if you clean out the drain really well, they'll have no home and you can simply kill the remaining ones and the problem is gone. But make sure to take the drain cover off and dig out as much gunk as you can. That's where they're breeding and they'll come back if you don't.

@FixEverythingYourself4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay in replying; your comment landed in the Spam folder. I've not heard of another kind of fly ending up in kitchens or drains. However, I won't claim to be an expert on that. However, if you inspect your drain and find them congregating there, it means they've made a home in your drain. So whatever kind they might be, pay attention to your drain and whether you need to open that up to clean it. Good luck!

Thank you, this was so informative. What if you have these small tiny drain flies (gnats) accompanied by an inconsistent odor (maybe sewer gas smell)? Would the same course of action be taken? Could it be a venting issue?
@FixEverythingYourself Жыл бұрын
Well, it could just be gunk in your drain causing the smell but it absolutely could be something else allowing sewer smells back in thru the drain. I'd start by cleaning your drain and see if the problem goes away entirely. But if you have drain flies, it's because they're nesting somewhere in the drain. This will fix that problem!

@christopherbentley72892 жыл бұрын
Yours was the first KZfaq video that came up when I typed 'what are those little flies in the wash basin' into my trusty Webcrawler video search! It's been a bit of a mystery rather than an annoyance, per se, so it was more out of curiosity that I ended up here. I might put some of what I saw in the video into action, although, as my query perhaps implies, mine are in the wash basin rather than the shower. One thing that occurred to me is that, if the shower head were an adjustable one, you might have done something like turning it to the narrow power spray setting to direct it down the drain and turning the temperature right up to give the drain an even more thorough washing out. I've tried that sometimes while cleaning the shower.

Are the flies congregating near the sink drain? Sounds like they are if the bleach and drain covers worked. Several folks have commented that baking soda and vinegar is a combination that'll clean out the drains such as to remove the flies. Basically, you need to eliminate the source of food they're using, which is whatever gunk is in the drain. If you get rid of the gunk, you'll be able to get rid of the flies. Fruit flies are a different problem. I'm no expert there but there are plenty of videos on home remedies on getting rid of fruit flies. Good luck! I hope you're able to get rid of them!

I use my garden hose twice a year. Once before we put the hose away for the winter and then again when we take it out in the spring. Works well for us. Wow, I don't know. There are worms coming thru the grout between tiles? There's probably rotted flooring underneath if the worms are directly under the tile. Might need to consider pulling up the tile and seeing what you've got (not easy) or re-grout. I'm really not sure and don't want to lead you astray, just sounds like a mess. Good luck!

@@FixEverythingYourself Yeah. That's the thing I can't do, cause I rent the apartment. I tried spraying bleach in every corner and between tiles last night that have cracks and large gaps. This morning tried spraying and pressuring water at the gaps, a lot of worms coming out, but at least its dead. The most coming out of the around drain hole. I need to first unclog the dirts in the drain hole first i think, starve them and then put on bleach and hot water.

My plumber told us never to use draino, liquid plumber or any other harsh chemical down drains. They will eventually ruin any pipe system and will cost $$$$$ to replace. Used liquid plumber for a few years every time we had a clog and it ate through the sewer line and it all had to be replaced. Good Bye vacation. He used a camera to look at our other lines in which we never used a chemical for example the bathroom and that line was just fine. Lesson learned.

What's that drain gel/cleaner you are using?

I can’t get my plugs off by hand as they are pop up ones can I do it just by using boiling hot water ?
@FixEverythingYourself10 ай бұрын
Maybe, but would be much better if you can figure out how to get access to the drain so you can pull out whatever gunk is in the drain. Also, several people have commented that boiling water is too hot for many pipes. So I suggest you use very hot water but not boiling it. But that's likely not going to be enough. Might need to use Drano or something like that first. The gunk is where the flies are nesting (yuck...).

What's the name of that tool? I've never seen a small snake like that
@FixEverythingYourself3 жыл бұрын
I think they're called "drain snakes." But whatever they're called, they should be easy to find at Walmart or Lowes in the plumbing/bathroom areas.

I would not recommend pouring boiling water into PVC plumbing. Use vinegar and baking soda, brush thoroughly with proper sized pipe and drain brush, then flush with hot water.

It was some generic form of drain cleaner. Similar to Drano but not as good, probably. Just something that would dissolve anything I couldn't reach with my tools.

The first one is fish tape for pulling wire, not a drain cleaner. the second one is the correct tool.

We have septic flies in a shower that we never use but I run the water 1x a week so the traps don't dry. There could be no buildup because it was a new house and unused. It happens 1x a year. We are on a septic. Any thoughts?
@FixEverythingYourself2 жыл бұрын
The flies lay eggs and hatch in the drain of there's anything (gunk, hair, etc.) left in there. I recommend taking the drain apart, cleaning it thoroughly, then run the water occasionally like you're doing. But cleaning out the drain is key.

I built my house in 1988. At that time I knew I did not want drain problems. I took out tub pop up drain cap and put in caps with holes I bought at depot. I then took some of those copper scrubbing pads and cut them up. Put the copper strips in to cups and sat the decorative original cap on top. After about 2 showers I replace the strips which are covered in hair. Would not work on the drain in video. Did sinks the same way but wife did not like the look so I went back to stock on sinks. Of course they will stop up and my plumber gave me these strips that you slide in along the side of pop up.(remove nothing) Amazed how much hair they catch. Tell wife, now we are old and losing hair, so stand away from sink when combing hair. What gets on floor can be removed with large lent rollers from Walmart. I just started having the fly issue. Have been talking about it and sure a device in my home is listening to us and that is why this video popped up.🦇

Well, I guess I have some drains to clean. I hate these little, nasty bastards, just like regular house flies. I especially hate when they make it out into the house, and suddenly you see it sitting on your sofa or computer screen! I went to flush a rarely used toilet today, and one started buzzing around me, so flush that water often so as not to dry the traps out.
@FixEverythingYourself4 жыл бұрын
Yep, super annoying. Took me a while to figure out where they were coming from, and the video is from a shower I use every day!

Our drain flies are coming out of a crack in some grout near our bathtub. 😩 how do you fix that 😭😭😭😭
@FixEverythingYourself3 жыл бұрын
Hmm. I'd need to see it but apparently there's gunk that's gotten underneath there. The proper fix would be to take some of the floor off, clean out what's down there, and re-seal. But a quicker fix would be to clean off the grout area and apply caulk to block the hole. But may not be a great idea long-term.
