Yellowjackets are a common type of wasp that pose threats when they set up nests in residential neighborhoods or public spaces. Like most other wasp species, yellowjackets are territorial and become aggressive when their nests are threatened. Unlike other wasp species, yellowjackets are also known to sting unprovoked, making them one of the more dangerous wasps to have around.
Yellowjackets are smaller wasps, typically growing to be between 3/8ths and 5/8ths of an inch in length. Their body colors are composed of black and bright yellow patterns, which is where the name “yellowjacket” comes from. Besides physical appearance, the best way to identify yellowjackets from other wasps is to observe their nesting situation. If you observe wasps traveling in and out of underground holes or voids within walls, then you’re likely dealing with yellowjackets.
To confirm yellowjacket activity, you’ll need to observe your property for any yellowjackets. Yellowjackets are typically foraging for meat or hunting other insects as food for themselves or their larvae. Yellowjackets can also be attracted to flowers or sweets. It’s not uncommon to find them near trash cans. Once you’ve found some, keep track of where they travel, and they’ll eventually lead back to the nest. Be sure to keep your distance to avoid aggression.
To get rid of yellowjackets on your property, you’ll use a combination of insecticides like Stryker Wasp and Hornet Killer, D-Fense Dust, and Sylo Insecticide. Stryker Wasp and Hornet Killer will knock down yellowjackets quickly, D-Fense Dust will treat and kill yellowjackets leaving and entering the nest, and Sylo will protect the surfaces of your structures from further yellowjacket activity.
Although Sylo will continue to protect treated areas for up to 90 days after application, you can take further steps to ensure paper wasps stay away from your property. Make sure your property is kept clean. One of the most effective ways of preventing yellowjackets is to deny them their food resources. Pick up trash and make sure no food is left outside. Yellowjackets will forage for food in garbage, so make sure to regularly take out your trash and leave it in sealed garbage containers. You can also deny access to water sources by draining standing water like in birdbaths or plant pots after rain. If yellowjackets are unable to forage for food and water on your property, then they have no reason to establish themselves.

Yellowjackets were going in and out a crack in my porch floor. I got one of those tennis racket type bug zappers, taped the on button down, and laid it over the hole. Sounds and smell of cooking yellowjackets was really satisfying. Also have put those 12” tall sticky bug traps next to nests. Catch lots of them.

Identify the entrance to their colony. Wait until night time and empty a bottle of cheap dishwashing soap into the hole. Use your garden hose and flush the soap into the nest with a fairly strong stream of water for about 10 minutes. I killed two large colonies using this method and they never returned. For the paper nests just mix the liquid soap 50/50 with water and soak the nest. This works on the individual wasps that fly around the nest as well.

I take those yellow plastic YJ traps from hardware stores, remove the screw on base with the entrance holes. Get a cardboard box of about 8X8X12, or so. Cut a hole the size of the trap without the screw on base. Next cut a couple small holes, 2 or 3 , about 1 or 2 inches diameter will do. For bait, take a string, tie a strip of raw bacon on it and hang the bacon near the holes. Yellow Jackets will enter the holes from smelling the bacon, when they have eaten enough, instead of going out the same way, they with fly toward the light and get trapped where they evenually get dehydrated and die. On a hot day this time of year, the trap will fill up fast.

Stung back of my ankle, then when I reached for it, another got me between my thumb and for finger. Two chased me from the backyard to the front door. My foot and bottom third of my leg ballooned for a week. And for a week they wait for me to come out the front door and attempt to attack again. No exaggeration.
@billinct860
@billinct860 Жыл бұрын
The nest is likely right near the front door. Go outside using another way. From a distance, watch for the yellow jackets coming and going from one place... that will be the nest entrance. If the nest is in the ground pour a bucket of hot soapy water on the entrance at night. If inside a wall or where soapy water won't work, you will have to buy Hornet Spray and again, at night, spray the place where they enter and fly off from. Sounds like you are allergic so it may be better to call an exterminator despite the cost.

Edited ** to a more accurate solution: One plant-based solution: buy pennyroyal (mint family) tincture, and mix a decent amt of drops with water (needs to be potent, but since tinctures are strong, use judgement). Then, pour into a plastic sprayer, like a $2 ironing sprayer, and spray the whole hive. Just be sure to wear protective clothing to prevent being stung. The yellow jackets will immediately be immobilized, and any remaining will migrate to another territory.

If you smoke cigarettes, tear a little less than 1/2" of the end and chew it enough to break it up a little and coated in your spot and spit it in your hand and work it into a compress and put it on the sting spot. Spit on it to moisten for about an hour. If you don't smoke, buy a single black and mild, cut the outer layer, grind the inner tobacco, and then spit on it to make the compress. If you just try water, it won't get the tobacco to cling together. Worse reaction would have been if they were allergic, but you would know right away. I have found this works with bees, ants, wasps, and yellow jackets. A lot better than Benadryl gel for big bites.
