My problem is not necessarily getting started with worldbuilding, it's knowing when to stop and actually WRITE my stories 😆 Although, I do find that with some of my cultures, it is hard to start with their worldbuilding as opposed to others; I have cultures that have more depth than the ocean while some are just puddles 😫

I am having the same problem...this has ultimately lead to me loving my characters from the more fleshed out cultures than the ones not. But I just started writing anyway, all the world info isn't important to my story [yet], so maybe you should do the same. After all, not every aspect is important at the very beginning of the story.

To build on the Star Wars example you used, I find the OT's approach to world building great in what it _doesn't_ tell you. There is so much going on in that universe that you are never explicitly told, you're kinda just expected to figure it out. Jawas coming to sell you stuff just happens. Blue Milk is something you just drink. You're just thrown into that world as if you are expected to know about it.

I agree! It's kinda like telling a joke: over explaining it kills it. Knowing that the force flows through all living things and binds them together was enough. Hearing about midichlorians took something away from that mystique.

You, an author, are providing a service to the reader: the service of telling a story. When you call somebody to provide you with a service, the IT guy for example, do you want to hear everything he knows about C++ machine language, SSID encoding, and public key encryption before he tells you how to get back online? - Howard Mittelmark, Sandra Newman, "How NOT to write a novel"

One of the things you have to remember when world building is that you have to stick with the rules you've created. Otherwise plot holes and inconsistencies begin to develope. This is one of the reasons you don't want to specify all your rules at the beginning. Spend some time expressing a few of them and slowly add more as you go along. You yourself need to have an understanding of the rules so that you don't get caught in your own trap. If you think of a new rule you wish to add to the world your creating, you need to ask yourself a couple questions. "Does this mechanic actually fit in the world I'm creating?" And "How can I add this to my world without it being completely random?" For example, if you were drawing a boy rowing a boat down a river, you might add a forest in the background and maybe the sun or stars in the sky, But you wouldn't add a flying, clown, dragon in the background of this drawing, because it wouldn't make sense. One last thing, remember not to overload your world with rules. Having too many rules or ideas in a world can ultimately ruin it. Going back to the river drawing, you wouldn't want to add too much detail in the drawing because it would take away from the original point. Say you decide to draw fish jumping out of the river, as well as birds in the sky, and maybe some animals in the trees of the forest in the background. Then you decide you want to dress up your character in a cool outfit and maybe add some accessories to his boat. Combining all these ideas take away from your initial idea. Dour drawing has become an abstract of multiple different things instead of simple drawing of a boy in a boat.

I recently got out of a worlbuilding problem. There was this universe I originally created for a tabletop RPG I never got to play. So while I couldn't find any story to tell in this world, I've been developing that world in details: alien races, planets, maps, geopolitics, cultures... All of that probably lasted for mire than 3 years and eventually I ended up with this massive univers I didn't know what to do with. Recently when I decided to use this world for a comic I was stuck for weeks before I realized that I was pushing to hard. I was just trying to find a story to fit the universe instead of trying to find a universe for a story. It's been a little difficult but I decided to put this world away to start again from scratch. Today, I have a story and a good universe and I'm really happy to finally be on the way of creating a project that exites me. So yeah. This is my story

I put off worldbuilding for far too long with my own cast. One of the big things I've only just recently gotten into is truly diving into the 'magic' system - that is, developing some sensible archetypes and categories to the 'magic' powers, explaining how they work and what their limitations are. Not only does it give me a lot of ideas for new characters and interesting limitations to the ones I have as I map it out, but it's also really helping me understand my existing cast and develop them in a deeper way. With some minor adjustments I can give their powers an internal consistency, and I can better fit a character's goals and interests to these archetypes. The more I dive into this system, the more ideas naturally pop out and I get a better sense not only of what my characters should be able to do (and details like how long can they keep doing X, or how far can Y reach, how heavy can Z lift) but also what future characters might bring into the mix as well. The vast majority of this background work will never be seen in any final product, but I can see how it will help in telling a much more cohesive and consistent story. When you put the rules in place, people can sense that they're there, even when you don't outright show the rules.

3 eyed frogs... I have to think about "The Last Airbender" and "Legend of Korra": Expect for the "Magic" in form from spirits and elemental bending stuff, the animals from that world are what makes it so special. Flying Bisons, Lemures with sliding skin, icebear Dogs, fire ferrets, platybus bears and so on... I think the animals are one reason, why this world is so fascinating. They may be just "fluff", but i can´t imagine this world without them.

I'd like to add that a lot of people emulate the world building style presented in manga and anime that is done through stopping and explaining aspects of that world through illustrations as well and lengthy flashbacks that can really break immersion. Compare the world building of Attack on Titan versus Samurai Jack for example. Attack on Titan loves to explain is world to the viewer saying how the horses they are riding are uniquely bred and giving a brief synopsis of the breeding history, or telling them about the exact mechanics of the weapons and gear the characters are using; the audience is spoon fed this information. Samurai Jack, on the other hand, let's the visuals give hints of the world letting the viewers fill in the gaps; we are not told why the tribe dogs can talk instead there's a billboard of a the famous talking dog from Powerpuff Girls saying he likes dog food. The viewer puts two and two together that this show takes place in the Cartoon Network shared universe, it's in the future and these dogs must be the descendants of Talking Dog the PPG character. There is nothing wrong with liking anime and it's method of conveying information, but if you're trying to sell you product to a western audience that isn't familiar with, or doesn't like anime, you're going to lose people by breaking immersion, or overwhelming them with information best left for the appendices. Let the audience figure out their own, or influence them to come to your intentions for the universe rather than shoving a three eyed frog in their face. I think that's what you mean.

@PeterDanielBerg
@PeterDanielBerg 4 жыл бұрын
@@rouka120 well i think the next part would be either summarizing the protagonist/pov character, if the person you're talking to needs the human element to understand your world, or try to bullet point some of the major rules about how your world works. e.g. i could summarize my world loosely as "it's like metal gear meets discworld; our hero is a magician who has to defend their nation from a foreign invasion; magic is powered by dark matter and doesn't work on glass". it doesn't need to be precise or complicated until you really know whether they are interested. but a good summary will prompt people to ask you questions and if they ask questions then they're probably interested and then you can get more detailed. happy new year!

Brookes Eggleston, do you think you’d like to do videos on Blue and Orange Morality? I think it makes for a great worldbuilding tool. What I like to do is I like to choose a concept to be the central basis of an entire alien species’ morality. Then I branch out into different interpretations of what that concept means to build different nations, organizations, philosophies, factions and ideologies out of them.

When is it necessary to explain or "logic-ify" the mystical parts of your world? If people didn't truly understand the force, people would complain and say things like "Oh, so then ANYONE can have the Force, not just Jedi" and things would get complicated....

A couple of things that bug me about worldbuilding are when it's lazy or illogical. Lazy world building would be like saying, "It's exactly like our world except traveling through time is as easy as hailing a cab." Um, no. There is nothing about our current society that would still be intact if a major thing, like time travel, were readily accessible to everyone. In fact, that would be a nightmare world. Which might actually make for a cool story, but nothing about how humans interact with each other today could survive such a colossal change. Illogical world building would be like the X-Men comics, where some children develop superpowers when they reach puberty and they are often rejected or ostracized by their families for being different. However, it's completely illogical that parents would react negatively to the news that their child suddenly has superpowers, as if their children had somehow betrayed the family name by developing the ability to fly or control the weather. If anything, parents would be trying to exploit their mutant children for their own fame and wealth. Kind of like parents with a celebrity child, times ten.
@CharacterDesignForge
@CharacterDesignForge 4 жыл бұрын
I feel like the word "lazy" has lost it's meaning when it comes to storytelling, the same way that "Mary-Sue" has been diluted into "character I don't like". I understand that you would tackle these things differently, and make a good point with the timetravelling, but that doesn't necessarily disqualify the X-Men, which were made as a parallel of civil rights, for example.
@Barada73
@Barada73 4 жыл бұрын
@@CharacterDesignForge True. The X-Men have just never been a very good allegory for the Civil Rights movement (or the LGBT+ movement) for some very big reasons; but that's kind of a separate discussion. Maybe I should have said "undeveloped" instead of "lazy".
