How to Get the Right Exposure with Flash

I've learned that getting the right exposure with flash requires that you understand two main things: the difference between ambient and flash exposure AND how those two work together to create the right exposure with flash.

I've watching tons of video on flash and this is by far the most concise, logical, and clear explanation I've seen by a long shot. And this might sound like a weird compliment, but your delivery really brought it all together. You speak with exceptional enunciation in a tone that conveys patience with and empathy for your virtual students. Reminds me of Eber from Hardware Canucks, who has a similar delivery. Anyway bravo, you should 100% be putting a premium price on your pedagogy.

Many thanks for the vid! I was struggling to understand how to set up exposure with flash. Just invested in first Speedlite and triggers and was taking my 42 year old brain some effort to work out! ✌️

Wow at last it makes sense. The light is much faster than the shutter. Soo the light speed is what freezes the motion🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️ do you know how many experts have rambled on for hours on this topic and said nothing. Thanks

I have recently come across your channel (apologies for not finding you sooner) and your explanations are clear and concise. I have been using flash for quite a while without thoroughly understanding the concept and technical side. I loved your video on T1 and T5 flash duration and is always in mind now when setting up. I hope you don't mind me asking the following question. When I watch newsreels and see journalist photographers using flash, I notice that the flash is firing multiple times. Are they pressing the shutter button that fast for many photos, or is the flash firing multiple times for the one exposure/photo? Balancing the required light on a subject with one or two speedlights be they in softboxes or naked on stands is fascinating and rewarding when accomplished.

Great video! How about the synch speed for flash? Where you set the shutter speed either 1/160th, 1/200th, etc depending on the camera model. And then there is HSS for sport+ fast moving subjects. Would you make a video on that?

Hi, awesome content as always. Quick question, what kind of light do you suggest for both videography & photography? I mainly shoot products (1-5 layer wedding cakes). I also want to make video commercials for products but can't afford at the moment to buy a bunch of lighting. Will the Godox VL150 be enough for my situation?

Great video and well explained. It still baffles me how don't we see any motion blur with flash. The object is still being exposed for the same duration of time. I would expect it to be frozen bright in one point of the image but also blurred in the plane of motion during the exposed movement.

If you look closely, there is a streak of yellow underneath the “frozen” lemon wedge in the final photo. Nothing a little Lightroom work couldn’t fix, but it *is* there, so you’re actually correct!

Dear I love your video and I am starting approaching food photography thanks to your explanations! I have just a question: how you can use 1/200 ss on a Eos 6D? Isn't the s.speed limit for this camera 1/180 ? Thank u so much for you amazing contents and beautiful lights

This is a useful topic, thanks for the video. There's still something I don't understand though: when using a slow shutter speed, and a flash, why aren't we seeing trails for the falling fruit? I understand the point that the flash is much faster, say 1/10000th, and that "freezes" the action for the duration the flash is firing BUT the flash is only firing for a small amount of the overall shutter-open time (because we have a show shutter speed), and I'd think that the "rules" for ambient light would apply -- ie we'd see a blur because the shutter speed is so slow. What am I missing?
@ebqren
@ebqren 4 жыл бұрын
question: when you lowered down the shutter speed to 1/10 of a sec. (6:09) won't the sensor get any ambient light that would blur the motion? or is it because when you dialed those settings with f20 and iso 100 thats why theres no ambient registering?... does this basically mean that if i want to freeze motion using flash i just have to make sure that the flash power level is strong enough at a minimum setting of ISO and aperture that it doesn't register ambient? Thank you in advance hope you can help me clear this out. 🤔As usual great lesson! Im going through each of your videos one by one 😅
@figandlight
@figandlight 4 жыл бұрын
Great question Emman! Yes that's why I set my aperture to f/20 to attempt to eliminate any ambient light. As for flash power, yes. You also need to consider the flash duration. In general the higher the flash power of a flash, the slower the flash duration will be and will possibly not be able to adequate freeze motion (this does depend on how fast the motion is too). Hope that helps!
@ebqren

figandlight yes it does help! Especially that flash duration. Thank you for confirming. I tried them today with strawberry splash photo and it was a success! Will be posting tomorrow via Insta and I will for sure credit you! Thank you so much! this is a shifting moment for me 😃😅

Hi! Are you using burst mode? I tried the settings that you had in the video and I observed that the camera shutter speed does play a role in making my picture crisp. At 1/100 or 1/250 camera shutter speed, the wedges are perfectly crisp and in focus. At 1/5 shutter speed the motion is blurred. What am I doing wrong? Thanks! P.S I used the same power of the flash and also different powers, still doesn't make a difference at 1/5 camera shutter, movement is still blurred.

I did learn a good amount but im still confused how you can easily/quickly know what to set the iso and aperture to. I would like to get a flash for macro photography such as live bugs. Fussing with the settinga trying to figure out the exposure would lead me to missing the shot.

Yes you can! I'm not sure however if you'll be able to have full manual control over the flash power, but yes, same concept applies.

How would I know the exposure is correct when using flash ? What do you set the meter to? Also if your still able freeze motion when using a flash at lower shutter speeds does that mean camera shake would be eliminated as well even at low shutter speeds?
@figandlight
@figandlight 4 жыл бұрын
That's hard to say, because it will always depend on the vision you're going for for any particular photograph. In general, my rule of thumb is to make sure you're not either clipping your highlights or crushing your blacks and for that I always refer to my histogram. In short, yes. camera shake will not be present when flash is being used. That's because the flash's flash duration is actually the one freezing the motion and flash durations are typically very fast at lower flash powers. However, if you're shutter speed is slow enough, you might be able to see camera shake in your ambient light exposure as I think was shown in this video. Hope that helps!

Well okay great, so how do you manage the flash power? You're treating that as if we should just experiment. Literally every other type of lighting you have exact numbers that you should shoot for. With the flash there's nothing there anymore there's no guide numbers anymore and so it's impossible to actually know how to expose it right. That's what I was hoping to learn here and I'm really disappointed that that's not here.

I use 6x9, I cant afford to waste 3 rolls of film trying to discern a number that should have been on the box of the flash gun from the beginning.
