How to get this Lionel running again after sitting for years. No replacement parts.

For most Lionel trains that have sat for years, getting them running again is not hard. If all the parts are there but dirty and a bit rusted, a little TLC will get them up and running like new.

I have a 2065 that I bought at an antique store. It was missing all kinds of things, but after getting it serviced, it is one of the most reliable units that I have. It pulls like a mule. I did switch the smoke unit from pills to a oil unit. Mine has scratches all over it too, I left it that way, I figure it earned it's stripes.

For commutators I recommend a fiberglass “scratch pencil”. It does the same as your green scrubber, but faster and more accessible. You can even use them to clean wheels. They’re quite surprising.

Nice job. I'm a post-war junkie myself. I did some videos on a 2018 that was worse than that.

Great job Warren, my 2055 was worse than that. I still bought it cheap and cleaned it up a little, oiled it up. Runs beautiful. I think it's fun to get unwanted locomotives and get them back to life.

Thanks for watching and glad to hear that you resurrected the old loco! Most of my fleet were unwanted or junked by the previous owner. I was happy to take them.

I love doing that too. These trains are a part of history, and I like preserving them. It still amazes me how these 70+ year old trains still run with minimal maintenance and some inexpensive parts. It's a testament to engiuity and craftsmanship of a bygone era. Everything made now is basically disposable.

Good demo.... Surprisingly the tender whistle works and does not stick, or wine like it needs oiled. Realize that many of the postwar and some of the modern Lionel especially have magnatraction. So any flaking of rust or other metal particles will get stuck in the wheel gears and bearings and cause major trouble. I ruined my first Lionel 2055 by running it upside down and sanding the wheels to have better contact on the track, and eventually the main drive gear middle gear, that smaller one between the rear wheels that was brass, was so badly worn the wheels jammed up. I was around 9 years old then,1971-1972. I did not know about the repair shops and we really had no extra money to get it fixed. I did not throw it out, these were given to us from my dad's customer. 1973 my much older brother and parents bought me a new 4-4-2 steam engine and tender with both sound of steam and whistle C&O. (Lionel MPC, General Mills) As for hand grab on, you know those paper containers many Chinese restaurants use for take out, that wire on them is very close to the hand grab on railing on the model O gauge trains. The white washer thing is there to keep the smoke fluid / powder from going down inside the engine shell and keeps the smoke coming out the stack.

It's amazing what a little tlc will do. The great thing about vintage locomotives is they can be repaired, parts readily available. Try that in 30 years with the current Chinese made super expensive junk.

And the whistle works too! 🤩 Late to the party on this one Warren, I don't know how this one got past me. Anyway, a great tutorial, VERY handy in this day and age of rising prices on new O gauge trains. Oh, yeah, those old post-wars, MPC's, and early LTI Lionels area great way of getting into the hobby without breaking the bank. And if you're like me and all you want to do is watch 'em run you don't need all the high-tech stuff either. 2055's and 2065's are good ones to have. I've even taken two 2065's and custom painted them into Jersey Central and Erie engines, with rough exterior a repaint is no sin and it's actually fun to take a plain black engine and make it something unique. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for watching, Wayne. I was JUST talking with a local train shop and how the increased prices of new Lionel products and high shipping costs are starting to affect his sales. His used postwar stuff is still reasonable when bought from the store and train shows. But he wouldn't be able to sell enough of that stuff to make ends meet. I haven't seen a great demand for Lionels (Prewar, Postwar or Modern) here in Ontario Canada.

@@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Always a pleasure to watch when you post Warren, i RARELY fail to learn something from your videos, you're really providing a service. It's hard to say just where the post-wars (and MPC and early LTI) Lionels are going down here, to say nothing of Marx, Williams, and K-Line survivors. Like your local hobby shop availability of new Lionels is spotty and of course there's the high prices involved. (No WAY can I spend that much!) The boom times of post-war demand are certainly over but considering what the new stuff goes for I think I'm seeing a slight uptick in interest. KZfaq channels like yours and Dave Griffin's certainly help. When I was at the TCA's York show in April I could see post-wars were selling, not flying out the door but selling just the same. Hey, if you'd like to see those 2065's I remodeled I can e-mail you some photos.

I see a lotta rusted postwar locos on ebay, but they all have starting bids of over $100 n most refuse to lower the price. I did find a rusted 226e(no tender) to restore. I will try to keep it all original! 😊

I bought most of my fleet from Ebay over several years. The prices do get ridiculous but if you check the "new listings" everyday you will find some good deals from time to time. I use the "buy it now" option. I dont care for the auctions. The over priced stuff is people who don't know the value and are likely thinking its valuable because its old. I don't get frustrated by peoples pricing because the right always comes up eventually. The "all original" thing isnt always deal breaker for me but I prefer if the paint is original. Not perfect condition, just original.

Sir, I have a new (old) 2065 that runs. During general servicing, some wires broke loose. I need to replace the old wires and resolder everything. I need detail advice! Which gauge wire should I use and where can I find a 2065 specific schematic? Thank you!
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! You should be able to track down a schematic for it online. It is also the same as 2055, and 685. Most schematics you find online all come from the Greenbergs Postwar Lionel Repair Guide. A VERY valuable book to have if you have or plan on having a few Postwar locomotives that may need attention.

Out of curiosity - you mention cleaning up rusty wheels with a Dremel tool. I'm assuming you use the rotary brass or stainless steel brush attachment? Also, does that process work on the faces of the wheels, or will that remove the paint / chemical blackening? I just scored a 665 (same as the 2065 you are working on) and it needs some clean-up help.
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Ай бұрын
Yes I used a brass wheel in the dremel. I did use the brass wheel on the face but gently. Just to knock out any loose rust and dirt. The brass wheel didn't take off the black BUT I guess it could if you really applied pressure. Most of the wheels on my locos have worn surfaces anyway so I wasn't too concerned.

@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 thanks again! I've been experimenting with the nylon bristle attachments, and they seem to be OK for surface dirt. Also had an idea (yet to try) expanding on your green scrub pads. I found lighter duty ones at the dollar store. I was thinking of dipping them in some WD40 or maybe contact cleaner to get some dirtier areas of the shell clean. We'll see what happens!

@@dave52772 For the diecast and plastic shells I have just been washing them in the laundry tub. Palmolive dish soap and an old tooth brush. Does a great job. If the cab number is stamped, just ease off the pressure around them. If its a heat heat stamped cab number, no worries of removing those.

@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Also wanted to share... I discovered for small nicks bad paint (not large areas) - touch up with a black Sharpie marker. It's not a 100% correct black hue - but then buff out with a damp microfiber towel. Lastly, Armor All spray puts a nice finishing touch on metal and plastic outer shells- buff out after it soaks in. It also keeps dust off things for a while.

So. Just to be clear. You DON'T suggest that I duct tape one of these to the top of my car and drive through a car wash? I mean, that would clean it up somewhat...
