Okay Mr Bill Nye the science Guy!, you're really doing it the hard way!, you're making it 10 times harder than it has to be, use some CLR it'll clean it right up!, no Scotch pad needed no scrubbing needed Just an eyedropper, one drop on each finger, then turn the drummer on and rinse it off what's a couple drops of water, wipe it clean, and it will be clean, just like the date was made

Happy Canada Day to you and yours Warren, even if it's a bit late! Nice find on that Alco! And hey, if you want to flip it at a train show try putting it together with a short consist of some cars and a caboose you don't use that are in decent shape. I've done shows myself and let me tell you there's folks that want to get into the hobby, or just want a train for under the Christmas tree, and are a bit put off by the price of starter sets today. ( Anywhere from $350 to $450, but you know that as well as I.) Anyway, a fun and informative video! Thanks for posting!

Those cars are always fun to see get a new lease on life, plus since someone else had already did a crappy paint job it’s not like you’re messing anything up. Burgundy will look great on those and the flat black will look pretty prototypical.

I’ve always felt the Scout motors always got a bad reputation because they’re construction. Of course they’re not great but they’re not terrible either. I’ve always felt it at least got a Lionel in a kids hands and if they wanted to upgrade later they could at least use the rolling stock (depending on the couplers of course, but one could use either the tender or a scout/Lionel conversion) when they upgraded. But then again, for what a Scout set cost one could get a nicer Marx. But at least Lionel was trying to cut costs.

I recently got a 2332 that was a screaming deal. It’s my first GG1 and first time ever working on one. I must say that unless I come across another for cheap I don’t really want to tear into another one. It was tedious to say the least. My favorites to work on are anything based like a 681, 746, 726, 736. Easy to take apart, plenty of room to work with, and reliable as heck!

I bought most of my fleet from Ebay over several years. The prices do get ridiculous but if you check the "new listings" everyday you will find some good deals from time to time. I use the "buy it now" option. I dont care for the auctions. The over priced stuff is people who don't know the value and are likely thinking its valuable because its old. I don't get frustrated by peoples pricing because the right always comes up eventually. The "all original" thing isnt always deal breaker for me but I prefer if the paint is original. Not perfect condition, just original.

Out of curiosity - you mention cleaning up rusty wheels with a Dremel tool. I'm assuming you use the rotary brass or stainless steel brush attachment? Also, does that process work on the faces of the wheels, or will that remove the paint / chemical blackening? I just scored a 665 (same as the 2065 you are working on) and it needs some clean-up help.
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Ай бұрын
Yes I used a brass wheel in the dremel. I did use the brass wheel on the face but gently. Just to knock out any loose rust and dirt. The brass wheel didn't take off the black BUT I guess it could if you really applied pressure. Most of the wheels on my locos have worn surfaces anyway so I wasn't too concerned.

@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 thanks again! I've been experimenting with the nylon bristle attachments, and they seem to be OK for surface dirt. Also had an idea (yet to try) expanding on your green scrub pads. I found lighter duty ones at the dollar store. I was thinking of dipping them in some WD40 or maybe contact cleaner to get some dirtier areas of the shell clean. We'll see what happens!

@@dave52772 For the diecast and plastic shells I have just been washing them in the laundry tub. Palmolive dish soap and an old tooth brush. Does a great job. If the cab number is stamped, just ease off the pressure around them. If its a heat heat stamped cab number, no worries of removing those.

@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Also wanted to share... I discovered for small nicks bad paint (not large areas) - touch up with a black Sharpie marker. It's not a 100% correct black hue - but then buff out with a damp microfiber towel. Lastly, Armor All spray puts a nice finishing touch on metal and plastic outer shells- buff out after it soaks in. It also keeps dust off things for a while.

Great tutorial Warren! I don't own any of those cars but if I ever DO and they need a refresh your video will come in handy as a "How to." I've always assumed "If it went together it's GOT to come apart!" but you've solved the mystery of how to take them apart well! Burgundy / maroon would look nice on those cars with the flat black roofs. For contrast you could use a light gray or a buff / tan finish on the window strips. Since you only need to please yourself you've got lots of options. Thanks for posting!

Hello, I have a question, I bought a used turbine. The guy said it was a bad worm on the end of the motor. I took the motor out n it's not the motor. The first blind driver will not turn. I'm wondering if it's OK to remove the driver(s) to see why it's not turning. All the rest turn freely. Thanks for your opinion. 😊
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331
@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Ай бұрын
Thats what I would be doing. If all the rest turn freely you'll have to see what "gremlin" is hold onto that one wheel. My guess is a clump of dried 60 year old grease, pet hair and carpet fibre (hint of shag). Let me know how that turns out.
@jamesdenny4734
@jamesdenny4734 Ай бұрын
OK, there wasn't any grease, hair,or carpet fibers. It is the bearing. It was/is frozen to the axle. I took a hammer n knocked out the axle n bearing. The bearing is stuck on the axle real tight. I couldn't find a replacement bearing on ebay for the turbine, but there was a turbine chassis available. With everything, but smoke unit n headlight. Thanks for helping. Hope I can pick your brain again in the future!? Thanks again 😊

Metal tubular track rails are talker than fastrack. Older postwar cars tend to have larger diameter wheels. They actually ride on the inner surface of the plastic on the fastrack. Old track is better for postwar trains.

You need to get some CRC electrical contact cleaner and flood the motor, E unit, and gears and axels to remove all the old dried black gunk. Spray constantly and continuously until clear. Dous the motor, E unit, and drive gear until clean Where in the world did you get the notion that the wheels need to be pulled just to grease the gears. That would be totally unnecessary and a total waste of time. The only time wheels should be pulled is to repair something mechanical. Lionel never issued instructions to pull wheels just to lubricate and oil gears and axels. Oil and grease can be applied directly to those surfaces without pulling wheels. Grease can be applied to the gears with a toothpick in several locations and be spread by rotating the wheels by hand. I use the aerosol spray can of Red and Tacky grease that has a straw applicator like WD-40 that allows easy precise application. It makes no sense to pull wheels just to lubricate the gears. Oil is for berings, shafts, and axels that Lionel refers to as oil. I use a needle applicator. Grease is for gears that Lionel refers to as lubrication. Neither of which requires the wheels to be pulled to service Lionel engines. That is the craziest thing I've ever heard. Nobody on planet earth pulls wheels just to lubricate and service their engines.
