Even I call my dog's name he doesn't want to pay attention to me, even he knows that he'll get a treat if he looks at my eyes. (He loves the treats he just care about everything else than his owner or the treats). Outside world is too interesting for him, he also stresses about other dogs but we don't see them in every walk. He's soon 3years old.

You will need to build up the behavior then. Start in a low stimulation area with minimal distractions, such as your backyard, then when he is giving you constant focus, move to your front yard, then on your walks. He may get distracted from the other dogs, so you’ll need to increase your threshold from that distraction. So you may need to distance yourself further from the other dogs, and work on your engagement there. The goal is to slowly build up your dog’s focus from one environment to the next. Start in the lowest distracting environment first, such as your backyard, and be patient. Then slowly build up from there, such as to your front yard. Then maybe along your walking path in your neighborhood and go from there. Patience is key and reward for even the slightest look they give you!

@@CanineRevolution the thing is she is a very reactive Boarder Collie who reacts to everything and to get her attention is very difficult I try to make myself more interesting than birds etc but not easy

What is the best way to stop a dog from lunging at the food in your hand? I hold it between two fingers and still my dog lunges for it. I try to move fast to get it to his shoulder height but with back problems myself I can't always get down there fast enough.

What do you mean when you say he lunges at your hand? Is he biting your entire hand or is he just excited for the next reward?

@@CanineRevolution Yes, he is excited for the next reward and will jump toward the treat bag too. But when I go to give him his reward he is so excited and treat happy that he gets my hand with his teeth - i am holding the treat between the first and second fingers and have a flat open hand. My hand gets sore quick. He is also so excited for the treat that he jumps toward my hand and the treat before i can get it down to his shoulder level (he is a lab). How do we teach gentle when taking treats/rewards even when excited.

Completely disagree. I want my dogs to be more focused on the surroundings, not the reward he gets for paying attention to you! I'm sure there is a happy medium between your training regiment and mine. Different styles have different results with all the other variables involved when training your animal...

Engagement doesn’t mean fixation. The idea is to get your dog to frequently check-in with you for leadership and also to build value in your presence so you can get their attention in spite of countless distractions. Sure I want my dog to happily sniff the environment, but I think it’s nice to be able to walk past squirrels and not have my dog run into traffic; to each there own, I suppose.

Yeah, the training is not to stop him from exploring but to stop him from getting headstrong to the point you can't calm him back even in traffic etc.
