Yeah, it would definitely make your life easier, but do keep in mind that by having an FFL the government wants you to be in the business of firearms for the given FFL (selling/buying). They don't like to give FFLs for personal use. Although they are pretty lose on how much business you are doing on an annual basis. Also I am sure they are TONs of other restrictions in CA, so make sure to follow all local laws, or move. Good luck!

As long as it is on an official finger print card you can do them yourself (as of now, but it could change). Where I am from the police department gives you two cards for 10 bucks, and you avoid all the nasty ink so it was easier.

Wither or not you need a business licenses is more of a local thing, so I can't give you a 100% for sure answer. But you will very likely need a business license for it. If you can some how make it a part of your current business then great. Although you may want to separate them for liability and legal purposes.

That is a great question! I know once you have the interview they will leave you with a business card and they tell you specifically to ask all the questions you want and to NOT go to your buddy who had an FFL 10 years ago. I would go ahead and get it based out of your home as that is the cheapest. The average person won't know you have an FFL and therefor won't know to send stuff to you. Even if you advertise as a firearms dealer you are not obligated to do firearms transfers. If somebody ships something to you without your consent you can send it back, or charge them a small fee for the transfer. My local FFL charges $20 for the first item and $5 for each after that in addition to any background check fees. Great question!

You don't need an FFL yourself, but they will have to ship it to an FFL near you. You can find an FFL near you that does transfers using this link: www.gunbroker.com/ffl/index However after looking real quick it looks like the FFLs in CA charge a TON for transfers. Here in Utah/Idaho it is typically $10-20 for an FFL transfer, but there in CA it looks to be ~$100. Good luck. I hope you get it figured all out. Probably not worth the money/effort to get your own FFL, I would just ship it to another FFL.

Once you start getting into the destructive device categories it is well outside of my expertise. I know those licenses are expensive and harder to get.

It was quite a while ago and I only got the 06 so I could sell my cast bullets. The ATF agent didn't ask me any technical questions. But she did say that if I was getting an 07 the interview would have been a lot more instruction on how to document everything and the laws that FFLs have to follow.

Mags are regulated on a state level not federally. It would depend on your state. And if you live in a state with mag restrictions I think the best investment is to vote with your feet and go to a friendly 2A state.

Business licenses are a local thing that changes from city to city, so I am not sure, although it is VERY likely that you would be required to get one. The ATF will contact the city and let them know that you are getting an FFL, so if the city wants you to, then there is no way around it.

As far as records go they aren't any different then what you need to do for a regular business (transaction records, receipts, etc.) The only other thing is you can't sell pistol ammo to minors, and armor penetratingly pistol ammo is also a no-go. There are a few other things, but the ATF will cover those in your interview. As far as costs go... that is where things get depressing right now. Primers and powder are almost impossible to come by and when you do find them they cost lots of $$. Also unless you are an experienced reloader and understand the intricacies of reloading I would start off by just reloading for personal use and then go the business route. There is a LOT to learn to jump full throttle into the business side of reloading.

If you live in a free state then it is pretty easy to get. But yes you will have an agent come to your house and talk to you in person. When they came to mine they didn't really do an "inspection" it was more just to talk to me to see if I was competent and make sure I don't accidently break any laws down the road. You will also have to make sure your city is cool with you being an ammo "manufacturer." The small city where I live was super chill. Also keep in mind once you have your FFL the ATF reserves the right to come inspect your facility/home whenever the heck they want. They don't have the man power to do regular inspections especially of 06 FFLs. But that may be a deal breaker for some.

Yes it can, but you have to do it exactly correct and if you mess it up, or if a fingerprint is not acceptable then your application will get denied and you have to start all over again. I am not sure where you live, but almost every police station will offer a cheap fingerprinting service that are often electronic and help you avoid getting your fingers messy and make sure everything is done well.

I believe that is correct, that to import ammunition it would be the 08. But if you are just buying and selling ammunition manufactured in the US (NOT by you) then in most states this doesn't require an FFL (Check your local laws). But yes if you want to import ammo to sell then you need an 08.

If it is for your FFL, then just send it with your application to the address specified on the application. If you just want to send it to the DOJ I suppose you could just call them up and get yourself finger printed, although I wouldn't get fingerprinted unless you have a reason. Local police departments will usually offer public finger printing for cheep. Where I live it is $10 for two cards.

An 01 is for selling firearms. If you want to make them you will need an 02. And if you are doing business with the federal government and full auto stuff you will need a Class 02 SOT to go with it. All of which is a pain to get. But good luck.

Well if you live in a free state then you can already ship ammo to your home. But as far as firearms goes the short answer is yes you can ship them to your home. BUT once you get your FFL you have to keep a strong distinction between YOUR firearms and your FFL's firearms. You will also have to record everything in your A&D (Accusations and Dispositions) book and hang onto the records for 20 years. Also you must intend to do business with firearms because if the ATF finds out you are only using it for personal use then you will get your license revoked and face fines. Also they can show up to your FFL address at any time (typically annually) to inspect your FFL and all the firearms you have. So unless you are serious about getting into the firearms business it is probably worth paying the $20 back ground check fee to another FFL. Great question though!

No, FFLs are on the Federal level so they transfer from state to state, BUT sometimes there are different local laws you have to follow. And you have to notify the ATF that you are moving and tell them your new address within a given timeframe.

The vast majority of the interview is more of a education session on firearms laws that you will have to comply with and how to do all the documentation properly so you don't end up in jail. However they will ask about security measures that you have on your property and so on. If they find anything suspicious they will take note of it, but mostly they will leave that up to the background check. As long as you live in a firearm friendly state you shouldn't have an issue getting a home based FFL/business license. As for manufacturing your own typically that means you are milling out lowers, serializing them, and selling them, but you can also sell them. So I think the 07 is the way to go. There are so many regulations for FFLs with an 02 SOT to follow you will have to fill out the paperwork and go through the hour+ long interview/information session with the ATF individual. I also have a LOT more videos discussing the FFL/SOT paperwork, downsides of an FFL, and the different types.

Mine was shorter, only like 45min. But if you are getting an 01 or 07 it is longer. In that case they go over a TON of laws, regulations, and how to do your stuff so you don't end up in prison.

Yes you can sell your manufactured ammo with an 06 FFL. You can make your own ammo for yourself without an 06 FFL, you just can't sell it. Yes, there is, essentially it is a 01/02 FFL with an 03 SOT BUT then your FFL is the owner of the NFA item, so you need to create a Trust, and transfer the items to the trust where you and others you choose (ie: a significant other) are trustees. That one is a pain because you would have to establish communications/relationship with a foreign firearms manufacturer. And there is all the documentation on the FFL side as well to deal with also foreign parts are a pain to get and you have to deal with 922r etc. Unless there is a reason you want to import foreign firearms I would recommend an 01 or an 07 FFL.

Well if you live in a free state you don't need an FFL to buy ammo at an auction, so step one for the ammo would be to get yourself to a free state. As far as the collectors FFL that is an 03 and lets you skip shipping the firearm to another FFL. It is also super cheep ($30) every 3 years. But in order for a firearm to be considered a "collectable" it must fall into one of the following 3 categories. 1: Any gun which is at least 50 years old; 2: A gun which has been certified by the curator of a government museum as of museum interest; or 3: A gun whose value is substantially derived from its novelty, rarity, oddity, or historical attribution. Other then those you would still have to go through a traditional 01 FFL to get your regular firearms.

Then you need 3 FFLS Firearms: 01 Ammo: 06 Explosives (destructive devices): 09 (Expensive) Although it depends on the types of explosives you want to sell. If it is just Tannerite I don't think you even need an FFL, although there may be another license you need for it.

I am not sure who told you you need an FFL for a non-serialized part. Non-serialized parts can ship directly to your door and are not regulated any more then watermelons. BUT if the non-serialized part is attached to a serialized part that a customer is leaving with you then yes you DO need an FFL. Because they are transferring the firearm to you and then you back to them. I am not sure on the specifics but you would most likely need an 01 FFL. It is $200 the first 3 years and $90 every 3 years after that.

I didn't have to send a copy of my FFL to the chief law enforcement officer, but there is a step where you have to notify them that you are applying for your FFL. I had the contact info for the ATF interviewer at that point so I just emailed the chief law enforcement officer and CC'd the ATF agent in the email, and that was good enough for where I live.

For the FFL side it won't matter and I don't imagine that the military would really have any issues with it but you may need to double check. The only issue you may have is that if you move around the government is pretty strict about having accurate addresses and it is a pain to have to move your FFL address.

As far as I know there have been no major changes to the FFL process, however they do have a zero tolerance policy so if you make a mistake in your records they can pull your FFL. They also are likely more subjectively strict when considering applications. But I don't have any data for that. They have also made a few updates to the 4473.

Manufacture is 07, not sure what you mean by tester. If you manufacture firearms you are more then welcome to test what you manufacture. Firearms are supposed to be tested.

Honestly there are lot of CLEOs over your specific area. For example you could reach out to a state level officer or local officer. What I did is a local police chief because he is my local CLEO, and he is more familiar with the city, it's people, and the laws. So search your city, state and the chief of police. It should come right up. If you live in a small town without its own police force, then search for you county sheriff.

You don't even need a business to get started, although many localities will require it if you are doing a significant number of transactions. My FFL is just in my name and not under a business because I don't actually do many FFL activities very often.

Yes... but for a rocket launcher you would have to jump through a LOT of hoops.

Storage requirements are mostly state level rather than federal. They just have to be secured. Although they do recommend a safe and if you didn't have one it would likely be a red flag when they come chat with you about your FFL. Background checks are done through the DOJ. There are TONs of different local laws if you live in a blue state so you will want to look that up. You have to have a bound book for acquisitions and dispositions and they will walk you through the whole process when you get your FFL. Wholesaler difficulty varies depending on the wholesaler, some have minimum purchase reqs that are kind of high.

I checked the ATF forms they have up as of today: it's just a 2x2 photo. You can get these done at Costco and other stores. This was also done for my CFP. There is no passport exclusive photo style per se; just that 2x2 are far more often used for passports and the term is common. EZ PZ.

The infamous class 3. I'll make a whole video on that. But for now here is what you need. First off the proper term is an NFA weapon specifically a "machine gun" there are two ways to get one legally. The easiest is to buy a fully automatic that is pre 1986. That is when the ban went into effect unfortunately these will cost you lots of money I was looking at an M16 the other day it was going for $35,000. Also you have to fill out a form 4, send in photos and fingerprints, and wait 6-12 months for the government to process everything. Then you will have a fully transferable machine gun. But to transfer (sell) the buyer has to go through the same form 4 process you just did. The other way is to get an 01 or 04 and pair it with an 03 or 02 SOT respectively (Special Occupation Tax) the 03 SOT is what is typically referred to as the "class 3." The process that you would take is to first get your regular FFL which costs $150 every three years. After getting that you would apply for the class 03 SOT which costs 1K every year. Once you have that you can purchase NFA machine guns. BUT here is the catch with the FFL option: 1st you have to be engaged in the business of firearms dealing or else they will take away your FFL. 2nd once you get rid of your FFL you can no longer be in position of your NFA item.

You can do it from your home, mine is a home based FFL, and I don't even have an LLC. Granted I don't really sell much at all it is mostly for family and friends. If you wanted to sell stuff you should set up a business even if the business is based out off your home.

For the 06 (ammo manufacturing) there is not. I am not 100% sure about the 01 (regular FFL), but I know for sure that they they do ask about storage, locks, cameras, etc. At the end of the day if you (or your FFL) owns the gun your responsible for whatever comes out of the barrel even if it got stolen. So you will probably want to at least get a safe.

If there are multiple people listed on the FFL then nothing happens. But if there was only one holder then a non prohibited possessor can take over the license by reaching out to the ATF within 30 days. If that doesn't work the ATF or local PD will take possession of the firearms which is obviously not optimal. Yes, you have to be a U.S. Citizen. 21 years or older, legally allowed to posses firearms and ammunition, and have a physical address. However, they don't care if you are an immigrant as long as you have gotten your U.S. citizenship. Which I understand is a huge pain in the butt... that is a discussion for a different day.
