In this video I used talcum powder to prevent pages from sticking together. Since talc or talcum powder has some safety concerns. I decided to try out safer alternatives. I tried baking soda and cornstarch. Both work fine as an alternative for talcum powder. The baking soda is a little grittier. Since cornstarch is a thickening agent you must be careful not to use too much of it. Because you risk your layer of cornstarch turning into a paste, which is not fun to clean up. You need to use the tiniest amount of cornstarch for it to work, without becoming a gooey mess. I will probably use baking soda in the future. I found it to be an acceptable alternative, although it's not as effective as talcum powder.

Can you elaborate on the "safety concerns" of the talcum powder?
@MarsellaFyngold
@MarsellaFyngold 10 ай бұрын
@@aaa_1727according to the Wikipedia page on talcum powder: "Talcum powder, if inhaled, may cause aspiration pneumonia and granuloma.[2] Severe cases may lead to chronic respiratory problems and death.[3][4] The particles in corn starch powder are larger and less likely to be inhaled.[5]" and then there's more after that. You can also do more in depth research of your own if it interests you. For this small an amount though it should be fine. Maybe wear a mask as an extra precaution if you're really worried, but as its being mixed with some water it should prevent most of the problem of airborne particles being inhaled and should be ok.

What type of powder u used? So that i can purchase here in india becoz this brand of Mentho powder would not be available here
@AnnaMarieReads
@AnnaMarieReads 3 жыл бұрын
It’s talcum powder. The mentho powder was just a brand I had at home at the moment. I am currently trying out some safer alternatives to talcum powder. Since talcum powder has some safety concerns. If I find any alternatives I'll let you know. UPDATE: I tried baking soda and cornstarch. Both worked fine. With baking soda the powder was a little bit grittier, so I had a harder time getting the powder in between the pages. And if you use too much cornstarch it will turn into a paste when it comes in contact with fluids. So if you choose to use cornstarch use the tiniest amount. Even less than what I used of talcum powder. I will personally switch to baking soda while I look for other alternatives to talcum powder.

My concern is repairing an already gilded book edges. It's all gold and I noticed the book may already have a scratch pre-buying as I didn't check, or I may have accidentally scratched it after buying it and heading home.
@AnnaMarieReads
@AnnaMarieReads 2 күн бұрын
For that you would need to remove the previous gilding. By sanding it down enough. At that point it will be just like gilding any other book. But if you mess up with gilding I am guessing it’s going to look worse than a scratch. If you have never done this before it’s definitely a risk you are taking.

You helped me solve a dilemma of having to tear the pages off my very nice Black Notebook, tho I was thinking, do you think it would be okay to pull the hard covers back, like not force them all the way back, but like as far back as possible so they aren't too close to the pages? Thank you so much for your upload though, you proved to me it can be done
@AnnaMarieReads

I do think it is possible (I have done it before myself). As long as the pages are pressed together tightly (so no glue can seep through) you should be fine by pulling the hard covers back a little.

Honestly I'm probably just gonna do it the way you showed cause yours come out so nice, I just saw another one of your videos as I'm sure you'll notice I just commented before this one haha but luckily you also mentioned how to deal with rounded edges since my notebook comes with those rounded edges, the only thing I'm really curious sbout is how you get the bottom and top sides of the notebook with the hard cover on since I imagine the slabs won't fit perfectly in between pages and hard cover where they meet at the end. Hi thank you for making this video! I have a book which originally had gilded edges but there were scratches and an Etsy seller attempted to fix it with sprayed paint (which turned out to make the book worse than before). I am trying to re gild the edges myself and am wondering whether I can use any gold heated foil to fix the edges
@AnnaMarieReads

You can use hot foil to fix the edges. But before you do any of that you first need to remove all the paint and previous gilding. It’s a pain to do, but well worth it in the end.

Do you think if the pages are longer than the sheets of gild that you could over lap the gild and it would be okay?
@AnnaMarieReads
@AnnaMarieReads 2 жыл бұрын
It is possible to gild longer book edges. I usually don't overlap. I just iron on the first sheet of foil and place the other sheet right on the edge of the first. So that they actually don't overlap. If you place it correctly (so there is no gap or overlap) there only will be a tiny stripe in your gilded edge, which won't be too noticible. I did try overlapping the foil once, but the end result is just less clean. Also if you foil has a pattern on in, you should try to line the pattern as close as possible so the tiny stripe won't be as visible. Hope this helped.

Have you ever done a bible with rounded corners? I am worried I won't get the corners well enough or that the pages will be too thin. And I am curious if you have ever painted the pages then added gilding?
@AnnaMarieReads
@AnnaMarieReads 2 жыл бұрын
So I have never done a bible with rounded corners before. I will have to try it out and get back to you on that. I did try gilding over painted pages. It turned out really messy for me. I made a bunch of mistakes along the way ( putting the foil on not fully dried paint, using too much glue, Etc.) I know it is possible. I just did it wrong. So I will have to give it another try before I can truly say it’s possible with the method I am currently using. I am planning on doing some gilding in the next couple of weeks and will let you know if the method I am using can be applied to rounded and painted book edges.

@AnnaMarieReads
@AnnaMarieReads 2 жыл бұрын
So I have been experimenting. And I will post a video towards the end of next week. But I might as well tell you my results right now. First off I could not find a bible with rounded corners. All my bibles have straight corners. I did find a note book with a rounded corner and tried to gilt that. It did not pose too many issues. By layering the foil there was no line or anything like that visible on the rounded edge. So it definitely is possible to do a rounded corner. I also tried to gilt a bible with thin pages. I must say that I did not find it to be an issue. As long as the book was pressed down hard enough while gilding the thickness of the pages didn’t really matter. What I did notice though is that separating the pages from one and other after gilding posed some challenges. The pages are so thin that it’s hard to see where to pry them open after gilding. Also going through the entire bible separating all the pages takes a very long time. And the last test I did is gilding painted edges. So as long as the paint is not water based (otherwise the glue might activate the paint again and the gilding won’t stick) and it is truly dry. There is no difference between gilding regular edges and painted ones. Hope this update helps.

@AnnaMarieReads
@AnnaMarieReads 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s pva glue mixed with 50% water, to make it less tacky. You could also use bookbinders glue, but I found it to be pretty much the same as pva. I would recommend testing the pva and water mixture. Depending on the brand you might need to use less or more water. The glue should have a milky almost watery consistency. As you can see in my video the glue barely holds the foil onto the edge. I had to Sometimes reapply another layer of the glue mixture just to keep it in place while I iron the foil onto the book.

I am not sure what I did wrong, but my pages stuck together and when I separated them the foil flaked. Have you experienced this?
@AnnaMarieReads
@AnnaMarieReads 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I actually did experience this. Flaking was usually caused by one of the following: - Too much pva glue - Glue was still wet when foil was applied. You need to wait until the glue is sticky, but doesn’t leave a residue on your finger. - The book edge was not clean enough. After sanding the edge you shouldn’t touch it with your fingers. Just with a dry clean brush to brush of the dust from the sanding. And the book pages sticking together was usually caused by the following: - Too much glue. (Only a thin layer should be applied). - The book wasn’t pressed down tight enough when the glue was applied and the glue managed to seep in between the pages. - Also applying multiple layers of foil will cause the foil to flake. At most I managed to layer two foils. After applying the third it started flaking. When the flaking of the foil or stuck pages happens to me I usually just sand off the foil I applied. This should also help with unsticking the pages as your are basically sanding away the glue. Before you start sanding make absolutely sure that the glue has dried. Otherwise you might cause the pages to tear. Also when sanding keep the pages pressed together tightly as not to tear the paper. After sand I reapply the foil and just try again. Also the pages should stick a tiny bit after applying the foil. But after fanning the pages the pages stop sticking together. Hope this helped.

@AnnaMarieReads
@AnnaMarieReads Жыл бұрын
So if it already has gilding on it you need to use similar gilding and adhesive to fix it. If you are not sure what that is, you will need to remove the original gilding completely, before redoing the gilding with gilding materials of your choice. The reason being that the new gilding might not stick to the old one.
